Week 1: Mondays and Tuesdays - Introduction to the Words and Bookwork:
During class…
On Mondays and Tuesdays you will be introduced to the vocabulary words for that unit of study.
Homework Due Wednesdays and Fridays…
During Week 1 you will work on two sections in the vocabulary book. Monday/Tuesday’s homework is
to do the Complete the Sentence section. Use one of your notebook pages, divided in half into two
columns. Number your paper 1-20 and just write the word next to the number corresponding to the
question. Wednesday/Thursday’s homework is to complete the Synonyms and Antonyms sections. You
will use the second half of the column to answer each section, again only by writing the vocabulary
word next to each number (Synonyms usually have 15 and Antonyms have 5). Each homework
assignment is worth 20 points.
Friday, Week 1 - “A Smorgasbord of Words” Story:
During class…
 On Friday during week 1 we will go over the answers for Synonyms & Antonyms.
Homework Due Tuesday, Week 2…
Using ten vocabulary words, you will create a story incorporating all ten words. The story should range
from a half page to a full page long. A full page is considered one side of a piece of lined notebook paper.
Underline each vocabulary word within the story.
 This assignment will be worth a total of 20 points. Each vocabulary word used will be worth 2
points. In order to receive the full points you must spell the vocabulary word correctly and use it
correctly in a sentence which reflects your understanding of the word.

Thursday.
During class…We will go over the answers in class and students will correct their paper, receiving the total
score correct for both Choose the Right Word & Vocabulary in Context. We may also spend time playing a
review game to prepare for the test on Friday.
Homework for Thursday of Week 2…
 Don’t forget to study for your test, which will be on the Friday of Week 2. Make sure you
understand and are familiar with ALL 20 vocabulary words. Use the online resources to help you
study:
http://www.vocabularyworkshop.com
Week 2 Friday - Unit Test: Each test will be given in various formats. You will be required to know the
part of speech of each vocabulary word (i.e. noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.), as well as the spelling of
each word. You will also need to know the definitions as well as the synonyms and antonyms of each word.
You can use the online vocabulary games to help in your studying of each weekly test.
 The test is worth a total of 20 – 35 points.
Suggestions to help you study for vocabulary tests:
 Do all of your homework assignments!

Have someone quiz you on the spelling. To work towards perfecting the spelling, practice
writing any words that you miss several times.

Make flash cards (use the online resource if you wish). Just making them will help you learn.
Use them to quiz yourself or have someone else do it.

Have someone quiz you on the definitions. Remind him/her that you do not need to know them
word for word. If you have an idea of what the word means, you should be good to go.

If you misspelled any vocabulary words on your homework write the words you misspelled
several times for practice.

If you have any “down time” throughout the day use it to look over your words. Afternoon
study hall would be a great time to study your words. Just these few minutes a few times a
week will be helpful!
