A: We believe that prevention education can go a long way toward helping solve the problem of partner violence and changing societal attitudes toward violence. So the focus of CAEPV prevention of partner violence through awareness and education fits with our corporate culture and our employee and corporate needs. Q: Why would corporate America take on this issue? It seems very private, personal. A: In fact, corporate America must be involved in the prevention of partner violence. It is a societal issue and the effects of partner violence can be seen in the workplace every day. It impacts our employees' well–being, and ultimately our bottom line. We believe it makes good business sense to develop policies that positively impact the health, well–being and safety of our employees. And this is a natural extension of other employee assistance programs we already have in place. Q: What actions do you plan to take to address this issue? A: We are in the process of developing a corporate policy on partner violence that will be part of our overall employee assistance program. In addition, we have educational and communications materials that we will be making available to our employees. We not only want to educate our employees, but we hope they will take that information out into their communities through their families, religious organizations and civic groups. Q: How will employees be affected? A: Employees will now have options and information at their disposal to educate themselves on the issue, and to help them deal with this problem if it s impacting them or a friend or co– worker. Also, we hope that through increased awareness and education, our employees will become ambassadors to their communities. Q: Do you have a policy in place to deal with this issue? A: As I mentioned before, we are in the process of working to develop a policy. Q: Will employees who are either victims or abusers lose their jobs as a result of their condition? A: We want employees who are in an abusive situation either as victim or abuser to get help. Employees will not be penalized for making us aware of their situation and asking for help but they also have to be willing to get help. As with any other health–related issue, we will use all reasonable measures within established company policies and guidelines to aid and protect the employees.
