We are excited about our Strode Station Health Fair on Friday February 26!
The GRC
HOSA students will present a Teddy Bear Clinic for primary grades K-2 . Students in grades K-2 are encouraged to bring their own teddy bear or stuffed animal to the clinic for an exam. Grades 3 and 4 will observe a more traditional health science fair.
Kindergarten guidance classes are focusing on empathy training with the Second Step curriculum helping them understand and show consideration for other’s feelings.
Students enjoy singing The Feelings Song and acting out role plays. This helps them recognize and care about the feelings of others, essential empathy skills for their lives.
First graders are beginning the Be Cool program in their guidance classes. They are learning about coping in difficult situations, such as being teased or criticized. Students practice being Cool by staying in control, instead of having a Hot reaction: blowing up/fighting, or a Cold reaction: giving up/crying. They learn to stay calm and solve problems under pressure through discussion and role play with other students in class.
Second graders are being taught good manners and readiness in guidance class. The
Auto B Good series teaches punctuality, promptness, responsibility and respect as well as the importance of following rules. The Ready for Success curriculum introduces student success skills such as optimism, encouragement, goal-setting, memory, calming, healthy eating, exercise and responsibility for school and homework.
Guidance classes in third and fourth grades are using the Life Skills curriculum to learn about making good decisions, self-esteem, advertising discernment, stress management, communication skills, social skills and assertiveness. Mrs. Carolyn Burtner, Clark County
Health Educator, will be guest speaking with several guidance classes this year. We appreciate her instrumental role in providing individual Life Skills workbooks for all our third and fourth grade Strode Station students.
I am facilitating three fourth grade Be Cool small guidance groups focusing on social skills, self-control and stress management. Students in the groups have been engaged in excellent discussion and role play empowering them with essential coping skills for life.
Last semester, our Strode Station fourth graders completed Career Cruising interest inventories and shared career information in class reports. They are currently using
Coach Cal’s program
Understanding Money in technology class.
Jump Rope for Heart will be celebrated at Strode Station February 15-30 when our physical education students will be raising funds for the American Heart Association.
The kick-off event for this worthy endeavor will be a guest appearance of an outstanding
Jump Rope team from Lexington KY February 11 in the Strode Station gym.
February 29 through March 4, Strode Station students dress for
Dr. Seuss’s birthday:
Monday-wear red, white & blue; Tuesday-crazy socks; Wednesday-wacky clothes;
Thursday-Strode Station shirts; Friday-Favorite Book Character.
We are honored that Strode Station was selected to perform
Disney’s Lion King Musical this spring. We are so proud of our hard-working, talented musical student performers!
We are preparing for Strode Station Career Day on Friday March 25, the day before
Spring Break. Students will be dressing as a favorite career person. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would be willing to join us on Career Day to share information about your occupation. We appreciate your support very much!
