Mastery/Thinking Objectives: Students will identify Main Idea and Details using 2 column scaffolded notes.
Students will communicate orally in English to clarify academic text. (“Lion King” selection from High
Points.)
Outcomes/Assessments: Students will partner read the Lion King and record an entire summary of the
selection.
Activities & Strategies:
Preview/”Do Now” Review the previous lesson before vacation on pg. 23-24 The Lion King Story,
Read aloud your prediction from your notebook and read your vocabulary list with a partner (2-3 min)
Strategy: “Skim and Scan” Activate prior knowledge.
Direct Instruction and Modeling/Class Notes: Open text to the selection “Lion King”
Partner the Selection “A Group Effort” pg. 23. Draw a “T” chart in journal and label: Main Ideas and Details.
Model – How to find a main IDEA from a selection. (Think Aloud). Now have the children record 4 details from
the selection with a partner.
Ask the children to share 4 important details. (Note that some details are unimportant)
Guided Practice & Independent Work : Model a conversation stem: “ After reading the selection, I found 4
important details. “The details I selected are….”
Students record the group main idea and details in the journal. “Now we will summarize the entire selection
of “The Lion King” using some of our new vocabulary words. We will make sure to reference the text and spell
the words correctly.
Model and highlight how most of the summaries have the same information. Model that finding important details
is important to writing a good summary.
Closure: Sharing/Debriefing/Assessment: Have a student share their summary aloud. “My summary is…”
(Naming the Skill) This is important for children to make a cognitive connection to the skill and task.
Ask children if they have met the objective. Did we summarize the entire selection? Did we identify main
ideas and details?
Homework: Pre-view next lessons objectives. Next week we will prepare to read poetry. We will identify
how an author uses voice, mood, and tone.
