1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Coordinator of Photographic Research assists the photography area director in projects and
grants to include, but not limited to, image archive work, field photography, digital printing, and
academic research writing. The position manages a vibrant photographic laboratory in the Art
Department at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The Coordinator must adhere to strict
guidelines set by UNR’s Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) to ensure conditions in
the photographic laboratory meet health and safety requirements. Working in direct collaboration
with the photography area director, the individual develops curriculum and assists in developing longrange goals. The Coordinator is responsible for researching and purchasing equipment for research
projects and for the photography laboratory. The position reports to the Chair of the Art Department.

 Conduct creative work to stage, plan and create artistic photographs for projects
 Manage photography area digital archive files
 Research and schedule locations
 Purchase and maintain equipment related to research projects and grants
 Prepare materials for exhibition which including framing, crating and archival shipping
 Work collaboratively with faculty to write grants and proposals, including creating grant
budgets
 Manage partnerships with community organizations for photography services, including
development of photographic shot lists that can be used in photography curriculum and meet
the needs of the funding source
 Facilitate crosspollination of funded projects and publishing opportunities for faculty and
students
 Maintain field work equipment and supplies
30% - Photography Lab Management
 Ensure EH&S standards, chemical supply inventory, equipment inventory and other campus
policies and procedures are met in the photography facility
 Address facility issues (HVAC, custodial, etc.) and maintain, repair, and replace equipment
 Supervise volunteer laboratory assistants, work-study employees, and interns, who help
maintain darkroom hours in the evenings and on weekends
 Train users in all aspects of the facility as well as scheduling facility use
 Oversee computer technical support and ensure software updates/upgrades are completed
 Define the procedures for the equipment checkout program
 Acquire equipment through purchase or donation
 Maintain lighting studio equipment and facility
 Work with architects, contractors and faculty in planning and executing any renovations that
may arise from facility expansion or new building planning
 Ensure that student laboratory fees are utilized
 Meet with EPA regulators, as needed

15% - Curriculum and Instructional Support
 Work with Photography faculty to determine curriculum; propose new curriculum along with
updates to existing curriculum; work with the community colleges to maintain common course
curriculum
 Conduct classroom demonstrations on equipment and techniques and give technical
demonstrations to students on an individual basis
 Ensure students follow proper procedures, understand the proper use of equipment and are
thoroughly versed in handling of toxic materials
 Maintain and prepare slide lectures especially those related to the History of Photography
curriculum
 Maintain and update digital slide library and maintain digital archival standards for digital files
 Assist in student advising with regards to the Photography area; answer student questions
about details of the photography courses offered; review portfolios and administer a placement
exam
 Provide project assignments to Research Assistants (RA) that relate to the research and
teaching mission of the photography area
 Review RA work to check for accuracy and full completion based on the given guidelines
 Provide assistance and training for assigned projects
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator works in collaboration with the photography faculty to set long-term goals,
recommend facility improvements, and provide curricular input. The Coordinator’s primary job duty is
providing artistic/creative contributions to the department and grant funded entities. The incumbent
makes regular decisions on the creative/artistic work, use of course laboratory fees, staffing by
volunteers and students, design of a file archival system, and lab policies and procedures. The
faculty member assigned as Photography Director is consulted on initiating new projects and grants,
sources of funding, and significant equipment purchases.
Impact:
Working collaboratively with the photography area director, the Department of Art faculty and staff and
the administration of UNR is paramount to the professional education provided to the students and the
research produced. It is a team effort that fosters first and foremost a research laboratory that can
stand out as one of the top photographic facilities on the west coast.
