Work presented in an assessment must be your own. Plagiarism is where a student copies work
from another source, published or unpublished (including the work of another student) and fails to
acknowledge the influence of another’s work or to attribute quotes to the author. Plagiarism is an
academic offence. If you are thought to have plagiarised someone else’s work this could result in
disciplinary action.
I have read the above information and I can confirm that this work is my own, and that any
sources used have been acknowledged using the appropriate referencing system.

ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES
This assignment consists of an individual 10 to 15 minute presentation to the class, using PowerPoint. In addition
to the Social Policy assessment criteria on this sheet, you are also being assessed on your PowerPoint
presentation (see separate assessment criteria for IT and make sure that your PowerPoint slides meet these
criteria).
To achieve level 2, you should describe three of the main ideologies of welfare that we have studied in class.
These are the Social Democratic approach, the New Right (or Market Liberal) approach, the Third Way, the
Marxist approach and the Feminist approach. Outline the main arguments of your chosen approaches. Make sure
that you describe their views about the role of the welfare state.
To achieve level 3, you need to explain in detail three of the main ideologies of welfare that we have studied in
class (see list above). Explain the arguments of each approach in some depth. Make sure that you explain their
views about the role of the welfare state.
The presentations will be delivered over four weeks between 22 March and 26 April. Dates for presentations
will be allocated randomly. However, you will need to submit a copy of your PowerPoint slides and any
prompt notes on 21 March, so that all members of the class have the same deadline for producing
materials.
Remember that you are being assessed on your understanding of the ideologies of welfare and on your
PowerPoint slides. Although the clarity of your presentation is important, you are not being assessed directly on
your presentation skills, other than those linked to your PowerPoint assessment. (See separate IT PowerPoint
assessment criteria.) Your PowerPoint slides should summarise key points and should be accompanied by
more detailed notes pages (using PowerPoint) to ensure that you explain each ideology in sufficient depth.

Is structured in a way that is consistently
logical and fluent.
Guidance:
Ensure that you explain your three chosen ideologies as fully as possible in a ten to
fifteen minute presentation. For a merit or distinction you will need to observe the
time allocation and will need to explain the ideologies in very good or excellent
detail with clear and accurate focus on their views of welfare, not just their views
of society generally.
Organise your presentation so that it flows logically and fluently, moving clearly
from one point to the next so that the presentation is understandable to the
audience. Your detailed PowerPoint notes should also be logically structured and
clear.
