The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations (NCUSAR), in collaboration with the Saudi
Arabian Cultural Mission to the U.S. (SACM) and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Higher
Education (MOHE), is pleased to sponsor the Saudi Arabia Exchange Fellowship. Ten American university students will be selected for this prestigious program, which lasts for approximately one calendar year. The Saudi Arabia Exchange Fellowship consists of three parts:
1. Pre-departure Period - November-December 2013: after being selected, participants build their background knowledge of modern Saudi Arabia, prepare to be exposed to a new culture, and begin to plan the logistics of the next year of Fellowship activities.
2. Study Visit - December 27, 2013-January 8, 2014 (tentative): beginning with a pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC, participants then travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for an immersive experience in the country’s culture, society, and economics, as well as government priorities, concerns and needs as they pertain to Saudi-U.S. relations and the Kingdom’s role in regional and world affairs. Within the Kingdom, the delegation will be accompanied by two
NCUSAR escorts and various Saudi officials while being introduced to a broad range of government and business representatives, academics, policymakers, specialists, and student peers, as well as traditional and modern Saudi Arabian culture and life.
3. Fellowship Year - January-December 2014: after returning to the U.S., participants spend the following calendar year implementing a variety of programs, events, and outreach efforts in their home communities. These programs aim to share participants’ newfound knowledge of Saudi
Arabia with the American public, multiplying the educational impact of the program.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in an accredited American university for the duration of the program, and must be in good academic standing. Alumni of the Model Arab
League leadership development program are eligible to apply. Eligible students must be nominated by a Model Arab League faculty adviser (see page 4), and will be required to complete the application process described below. Only one student from a given university will be selected.
While thousands of Saudi Arabian students visit and study in the United States each year, very few
American students have a reciprocal opportunity. As a result, the average Saudi Arabian citizen knows a great deal about American culture, economics, government, etc. while Americans remain uninformed of the nuances, intricacies, and even basic details of a country of such strategic importance and interest to the United States, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabia
Fellowship was formed to help remedy this shortcoming and enhance knowledge and understanding of Saudi Arabia among America’s future leaders and general public.
