Breakthrough Program Coordinator Breakthrough Sacramento is looking for a dynamic person to directly coordinate student programming. Preparing for our 15th summer of service, Breakthrough Sacramento has a proven record of success in our “Students Teaching Students” model to prepare motivated students for success in college-preparatory high school programs and college while encouraging talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education. Breakthrough Sacramento will create a strategic growth and development plan in the 2008-2009 school year and this person will be a key member in this process and the plan’s multi-year implementation. Salary: commensurate with similar positions at other Breakthrough sites with consideration to local market conditions 1.0 FTE position – an exempt, salaried position Contract Dates: TBD Reports to: Director of Breakthrough Skills/Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; single/multiple subject credential or education methods classes preferred Two or more years of tutoring or teaching experience; Breakthrough experience preferred Clear communication with all constituencies – in person, by phone, and in writing Ability to connect on a personal level with current and potential Breakthrough students and families Strong teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring skills, especially with middle and high school students Student Admissions and Advocacy Monitor and respond to students’ academic performance both in middle school and high school Advise students on academic options for high school and college Work with Director of Breakthrough to plan and coordinate early college outreach and recruiting presentations in feeder schools, and coordinate the selection of new cohort of Breakthrough students: screening of applications, mailing of letters and contracts, phone calls to students and families, colead Testing and Orientation Day Programming Supervise: recruit, hire, and train tutors for after-school Weekly Breakthrough tutoring/enrichment sessions; work with high school and college-age volunteers, as well as Federal Work Study students; Weekly Breakthrough sessions at 4-6 locations are designed to support the Student Success Plans that guide the student on their Breakthrough path to college Plan, organize, and facilitate Breakthrough Saturday events (average one event per month): schedules buses and alternate transportation; coordinate donations of snacks and purchasing of lunches; recruit local teachers, tutors, and volunteers to facilitate the events; work with the Director to ensure annual Saturday costs meet budget parameters; Design and implement high school student events (such as Test Preparation Workshop, Juniors College Counseling Night) as identified Publish a monthly newsletter Manage Social Solutions Database for student records Co-Direct the summer session at Sacramento Country Day School, including the faculty selection, training, and evaluation weeks; work with students on behavior and homework issues; counsel teachers on academic and co-curricular program issues; support Breakthrough families.; co-lead teacher orientation week with the Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, and Director Participate in the annual revision of the Faculty Handbook for summer teacher interns, and creating and revising curriculum materials for the summer faculty. Assist in the training of and communication with new and returning faculty through emails and mailings in advance of teacher training/orientation week. Generate special publications such as High School Options, informative mailings for students, and other publications to advance the program’s mission. Other responsibilities will include other tasks as needed to serve our students and their families. Community Relations Actively participate in the Breakthrough Collaborative network.
