Music 1151 - Class Guitar I – Spring 2008 Dr. Deborah Barber, 377 Witherspoon, 964-3235, dbarber@atu.edu Catalog Description: Guitar Class I is introductory classroom instruction in folk and popular styles of guitar playing: technique, music reading, history of the guitar, chord symbols, song accompaniment patterns, stage etiquette and ensemble performance. Class size is limited to 15 students. Class is for one semester credit hour and meets for one hour twice a week. http://lfa.atu.edu/music/barber/guitar Music or Music Education major or minor or permission of the instructor. Course Objectives: Students who have successfully completed the course will have the following competencies: Be able to identify the parts of the guitar Be able to tune the guitar. Be able to read chord diagrams and tablature Be able to read chord charts Be able to play fundamental chords in the keys of G, D, E and A Be able to use strumming and fingerpicking styles. Be able to identify and discuss characteristics of various styles of guitar playing Be able to develop skills to teach the instrument to others. Be able to use the guitar as an alternative to piano for elementary classroom instruction. Objectives will be met through: Demonstration with hands on application by the student Handouts of charts, diagrams, technical exercises Daily warm-up exercises and structured practice Listening, analyzing, and arranging guitar music Written and performance midterm and final tests. Assessment Methods: Students are evaluated on weekly participation, performance, and achievement, as well as mid-term and final examinations. Students will be tested also on the successful completion of each unit of study.
