Welcome
Dear Cheerleaders and Parents:
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2011 Twin Boro Bears
Cheerleading season (hereafter TBB Cheerleading). Whether you’re a returning cheerleader
or a first year participant, I’d like to extend my greetings to you, and hope this season
proves to be a fun and rewarding experience!
I believe we have one of the best youth programs in the area – both in terms of
competitiveness and values. Our success depends upon a commitment to excellence from
our participants, coaches and parents. This Parent/Cheerleader Handbook was developed to
provide parents an understanding of the TBB Cheerleading’s standards and level of
expectations for both you and your daughter(s) as well as distribution of registration
materials. You will be asked to sign the acceptance form (attached at the end of this
handbook), which confirms your understanding of the contents of this handbook and
acknowledgement of the Code of Conduct. All cheerleaders in grades 5, 6, 7, & 8 will also
be required to sign the acceptance form. Forms must be signed and turned in with
registration materials which can also be found within this handbook (be sure to complete
and submit all forms with your registration form).
The goal of the TBB Cheerleading program is to provide all girls quality instruction while
teaching them the meaning of good sportsmanship, teamwork and cooperation. Most of
all, we are here to have FUN and cheer on our Football players! Should you encounter
parents or individuals associated with our program that lose sight of these objectives,
please remind them that this is about children playing a game. Our job, as parents and
coaches, is to facilitate a fun learning experience, and to lead by example.
The TBB Cheerleading program is a volunteer organization and its success relies on the
dedication and commitment of our volunteers (parent and high school coaches) and you,
our parents! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who have or will
volunteer their time and talents this upcoming season.
Lastly, I thank you for trusting us with your most treasured “possession”, your child. A
safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience for your child is our number one goal. I thank
you for your interest and your continued support throughout the upcoming season. It is
my sincere hope that you find our program to be well organized, exciting and FUN!
Warm Regards,
Jennifer Hastings
TBB Cheerleading President

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Twin Boro Bears Cheerleading program of the Mendhams and Chesters.
Our program is designed to familiarize girls with the fundamentals of cheerleading and the
game of football. This introduction seeks to promote and inspire teamwork, camaraderie,
sportsmanship, and to create friendships; but most of all, our main goal is for all girls to
have fun! Information included in this handbook is intended to provide you with
information about our program and key dates you should be aware of.
Bears Football is a traveling tackle and flag football program which competes in the Morris
County Midget Football League. The MCMFL is comprised of teams in Morris County. Our
cheerleading program is comprised of girls in grades in 1st through 8th who each cheer for a
corresponding age football team in the Twin Boro Bears program. Squad assignments are
generally as follows:
1st Grade: Flag Navy
2nd Grade: Flag White
3rd Grade: Clinic Blue
4th Grade: Clinic Red
5th Grade: Super Pee Wee
6th Grade: Pee Wee
7th Grade: Junior Varsity
8th Grade: Varsity
CHEERLEADER EXPECTATIONS / PRACTICES
Cheerleading is a team sport and therefore, attendance at practice and games is very
important. Each and every cheerleader is important to their team and it is expected that
participants attend all practices and games. We all recognize and certainly understand
unexpected situations arise, such as illness and family obligations that may require a
cheerleader to miss an occasional practice or game, but it is unacceptable for a cheerleader
to not attend practice without good reason. Excessive absences may place your child at a
disadvantage in learning her routines or stunts and may result in dismissal from the
squad. Your team relies on you. Please make an effort to attend all practices and games.
Practices begin on Friday September 9th at Mendham Borough Park behind the carriage
house. Practices are held from 4:30-6pm – weather permitting. Please note some simple
requirements:





Girls must be on time for practices
Girls are to come to practice appropriately and comfortably dressed (shorts, tees, tanks)
Hair must be neatly pulled away from faces (pony tails are the standard)
No jewelry should be worn (i.e., rings, bracelets, hoop earrings)
Girls must wear sturdy, athletic laced sneakers – no water shoes, sandals, flip-flops,
mules, etc.
Girls should not be chewing gum or eating during practice
Bring water bottle
Cancellation of an evening’s practice due to rain will be made by no later than 3:00pm. In
the event of cancellation, a message will be posted on the cheerleading web page under
updates at www.twinborobears.org. An email will also be forward to the head coach who
will be asked to forward to their squads. If possible, phone calls will also be made to
parents notifying them that practice has been cancelled. Be sure to supply all contact
information to your Head coach - - that includes email address(es), home and cell numbers.
NO GIRLS WILL BE PERMITTED TO WALK HOME FROM PRACTICE WITHOUT A
NOTE TO YOUR COACH FROM A PARENT/GUARDIAN. PARENTS, PLEASE BE
PROMPT PICKING UP YOUR DAUGHTERS FROM PRACTICE.
Adults, Siblings and/or friends who are not registered in the program or coaches, are NOT
allowed at practice.
ATTENDANCE AND ABCENSENCES
Cheerleading is a team activity that relies heavily on attendance and cooperation. The TBB
cheer program runs for approximately 8-10 games from Early September until the Second
week in November. As a result of the short season and the need for all cheerleaders to
commit to the program, we have certain rules regarding attendances and absences.
Our policy around attendance and absences is that girls will be allowed no more than three
(3) absences from practices and games combined (excluding religious holidays) during the
“regular” season (September through November). After two (2) absences, cheerleader will
receive a warning in writing. If a third (3rd) absence occurs, cheerleader will be informed
that, should she miss any other practice or game, she will be asked to leave the program
and turn in her uniform.
UNIFORMS & FITTINGS
All girls will be provided a vest, skirt, jacket, socks and hair bow. The Club purchased new
uniforms this past year and each girl is responsible for the care, maintenance and the safe
return of their skirt/jacket/vest at the end of the season - bows are kept by the
cheerleader. In order to ensure the safe return of uniforms, we will be collecting a $100
deposit check made out to “CPAA – Cheerleading” on the first day of camp. If we do not
have a deposit check for your daughter we will not be able to distribute her
uniform – NO EXCEPTIONS.
If necessary, uniforms are to be washed in COLD water and HUNG dry - no hot water, no
hot irons, no dryers. Parents assume responsibility for the replacement cost of uniforms
which are either damaged or not returned. All uniforms are to be washed prior to return to
the program. No uniform is to be altered or sewn in any way as they are the property of
the TBB cheerleading program.
Girls will be sized for uniforms during May fittings, for new cheerleaders, and at our
summer choreography camp for all others. Uniforms will be distributed at our summer
choreography camp in August, provided we have received the deposit check required. On
the day of distribution, all uniforms should be tried on at home that same evening. Any
issues or concerns regarding sizing or condition should be brought to the attention of the
coach and uniform coordinator within 2 days of receipt of uniform.
Also, please note that for tracking purposes, that each uniform has been numbered and
inventoried prior to distribution. Uniforms must not be traded or swapped with another
cheerleader as the girl issued the uniform will be the one responsible for the condition upon
return.
REQUIRED ITEMS
Our cheer gear vendor, Elaine’s Cheer Gear, will be on-site at our fittings day on Tuesday
May 17th ; all girls must attend this date. This will be your only opportunity to view and
order all mandatory and optional merchandise offered by Elaine’s. Optional merchandise
items this year will include hooded sweatshirts, flannel pajama pants, fleece jackets, and
multiple other items – but please note that optional items cannot be worn during the game
– only mandatory uniform items are to be worn during the game.
As mentioned, parents will be required to purchase mandatory cheer gear items to
supplement the Program provided uniform. In order to maintain uniformity among the
squads, we require all girls to purchase the mandatory items noted below - which must be
purchased /ordered at our May fittings day – see below.
ALL girls will be required to purchase the following:
White turtleneck bodysuit or midriff
Navy boy briefs
 Power Cheer shoe
Clear Rain jacket
 Navy break away cheer pants
Navy blue cheer bag – name embroidered recommended
 Pompom’s – Navy blue/white for (flag, clinic and pee wee levels); metallic for Varsity
levels
 All girls will be provided with cheer socks and a hair bow – additional bows and socks
can also be purchased.
All uniforms are the sole property of the TBB Cheerleading program. No
component of the uniform is to be worn outside of game day activities or official
TBB Bear events - this includes hair bows and jackets.
As the weather becomes colder, girls may opt to wear a fleece or appropriate jacket under
their team supplied jacket. These undergarments should not be visible and must be
Page 6 of 19
covered with the team jacket. Black or navy knit gloves and ear warmer can also be worn
during games. Gloves and ear warmers can be easily purchased at KMART, Target, Kohl’s,
JC Penney, Sears, etc. or at our May fittings in the recommended navy color.
All items ordered at the May fittings will be delivered to the cheerleader during the August
choreography camp. If you find a problem with your order, you must bring it to the
attention of the fittings coordinator immediately for an adjustment.
FUNDRAISING
For the 2011 season we will be selling Joe Corbi™ Pizzas and Cookie Dough items. Last
year we purchased 100 new uniforms for our program through making the sale of the Joe
Corbi™ a mandatory fundraiser for all. This year we are making this fundraiser
Mandatory for those girls new to the program. New cheerleaders will be required to
sell a minimum of 11 items or contribute $60 at our May Fittings.
For those girls who cheered last year, this fundraiser is optional as way to help offset the
cost of your required and optional uniform items that are purchased at our May fittings.
All fundraising forms and money must be returned at our May fittings!!
SUMMER CAMP
Each summer our program pays to have our half time routines choreographed By the
Mendham High School competition Squad. The camp runs for approximately 3 days during
the Week of August 15th at Mountain View Middle School in Mendham. All squads will learn
a Hello Cheer, Half Time Routine and Sideline cheers – which will be performed at both
home and away games. At this camp the girls will be taught proper stunting, tumbling and
cheer techniques appropriate to their age (separate fee). This camp is mandatory for all
cheerleaders!
It is important that parents have their children to camp on time, every day. This camp is
held rain or shine with the use of the school Gymnasium and the outside soccer
field. The girls will remain outside for a majority of the day, so please be sure to apply
sun block and provide plenty of water before arriving at camp in the morning. *Any
specific concern or limitations for your daughter must be given to the coach at
the time of our May 17th fittings*
The fee for the camp is collected at our May 17th fittings ($85 grades 1 & 2; $110
grades 3-8), in a separate check made out to “CPAA – Cheerleading”. In the event
that your daughter is unable to attend camp, the fee for the camp will still need to be
collected. Your daughter will not be able to participate in the half time performance until
her coach is satisfied that she has fully learned the dance routine. *If there is a conflict,
coaches must be notified at May fittings*
Tentative Camp schedule is:
 GRADES 1 & 2 ONLY- - Monday – Wednesday 9:00 – 12:30 pm
o Parent performance – Wednesday 8/17 at 12:00 pm
 Grades 3 -8 - Monday – Wednesday 9:00 – 3:00 pm
o Parent Performance – Wednesday 8/17 at 2:00 pm
Adults, Siblings and/or friends who are not registered as a cheerleader or coach are NOT
allowed to remain at the camp after drop-off.
MAY SKILLS EVALUATION
Twin Boro Bears Cheerleading is a recreation level program that accepts all girls of varied
abilities and skills. We recognize that for many, this is a great way to be a part of a team
and want to encourage participation for all. Though we are an accepting program, we do
have our routines choreographed for a better cheerleading experience. In an effort to
understand each girl’s abilities prior to our August camp, we will be holding a skills clinic
and evaluation during the week of May 2 at Mountain View Middle School in Mendham.
Each girl will be asked to come at an assigned date and time with their age level team,
where they will be taught a set of jumps, cheers and some stunting skills. The girls will then
be asked to come back later that same week for us to observe their skills and make notes
for our HS choreographers as to their abilities as a team. Each girl will have filled out a preevaluation assessment prior to the evaluation dates. The girls should not view this as a
judgment of their skills; it is merely an evaluation to better create an appropriate program.
GAME DAY
Coaches will provide specific details (each week) in regards to game location, directions and
arrival time. Arrival time is expected to be 1 hour before game time in order to allow for
our second practice of the week. Please ensure you check your email prior to your
scheduled game, etc.
Hello Cheers and Half Time routines are choreographed to include all girls, however in the
event girls are unable to attend a game; routines need to be re-choreographed with the
girls in attendance, and time prior to the start of the game is when coaches will make those
changes. Therefore, girls not at the field within 15 minutes of scheduled arrival time
practice will not cheer the Hello Cheer and perform the half-time routine – but will certainly
cheer sidelines
NO FOOD, SNACKS or DRINKS (other than water) ARE PERMITTED DURING THE
GAME.
With the new turf field at Mendham High School, we are prohibited from eating on the
playing surface or track – Water and dry snacks such as pretzels are the only items
permitted No Gatoraide.
Girls are not permitted to visit the snack bar at HOME and AWAY games. Girls may choose
to eat a snack at the conclusion of their game, however food will not be permitted during
Page 8 of 19
halftime or during the game. Games are typically 1 hour in duration for lower squads and 1
½ for upper three levels - - please ensure your daughter is properly fed prior to arriving to
the game.
GAME SCHEDULE
Game schedules are finalized by the end of August. Once received from the League, all
Coaches will be provided a copy of the scheduled for forwarding to their team. It is
important to remember that the game schedule (dates and times) is subject to change at
any time during the season. Girls are expected to be at all games even if there is a change
in the schedule. Please understand game changes occur during the season to
accommodate postponements due to inclement weather and field availability. As such, you
will be notified by your Coach in addition to game information be posted and available on
our website. Game schedules and directions to all away games will also be posted on our
website www.twinborobears.org on the cheerleading updates page.
Games are typically played on Saturday mornings (flag, clinics and SPW) and Sunday
afternoons (PW and Varsity levels), though there are occasional Friday and Saturday night
games. Girls will cheer at both home and away games. All home games will be played at
Mendham High School - Sunday games on turf, Saturday’s either on Turf or upper practice
field. Directions to away games and will also be available on the www.twinborobears.org
web site. Please allow enough time for getting lost!
The season typically ends with the final games being played the first weekend of
November. All squads are REQUIRED to attend all games regardless of weather
conditions.
SIDELINE ETIQUETTE
All cheerleaders must exhibit proper behavior while on the field. At times, the football
action encroaches in out of bounds territory where the girls cheer. In an effort to maintain
a safe environment for all girls, they must pay attention and listen to their Coach’s
directions and leadership. When cheering at home games girls are to perform on the HS
track at or about the 50 yard line heading toward the scoreboard.
While not cheering, ALL girls must stand in their assigned positions with their hands resting
on their hips. Girls may not run around, stunt, cartwheel, etc while in line. Excessive
reprimanding may result in your child being asked to sit out the quarter/half/game. Parents
please re-enforce this rule with your daughters, especially the younger girls and help us
keep and look organized during the game.
FIELD RULES
Mendham High School and the MCMFL have strict field regulations regarding sideline and
field access. Please adhere to these guidelines as outlined.
Access to the field area (fenced in turf area at home games) will be limited to coaches,
staff, cheerleaders, players wearing game jerseys, special guests and chain crews.
Volunteers and special guests must have permission of the Bears organization and/or
coaches to gain access to the playing surface.
Anyone entering the field of play to confront a coach, official or member of the
opposition in a confrontational manner is subject to ejection from the facility and may face
possible banishment as a spectator at future MCMF events.
Our program has been exemplary in many of these areas but wanted to make you aware of
the rules as there is a zero tolerance for any type of misconduct.
EMAIL/WEBSITE
Ongoing and timely communication with coaches and parents is one of the key factors to a
successful program; I will keep all teams informed as information is provided to me.
On occasion, you will be provided information through the mail, at practice or at games, but
our main means of communications will be email. If you do not have access to email,
please let your Team Mom know and they will make arrangements to provide you the
information. All hardcopy information provided will also be posted on our website at
www.twinborobears.org the site will be updated with any new information as it becomes
available. I encourage you to visit the site especially in the event of inclement weather for game cancellations.
To access the website, enter www.twinborobears.org and select the cheerleading tab, then
the updates drop down. Directions and upcoming events will all be contained within this
site. For game directions, enter www.twinborobears.org and select the fields tab to the left
of the main window.
PICTURE DAY
Our photographer, Bedrosian Photography will be onsite to take both group and individual
pictures during the second or third week of September. Each team is asked to attend the
picture time slot they have been allotted in order to get a group photo of the team. Picture
order information will be distributed at the first practice in September.
Coaches
Each squad will have at least two adult coaches. Coaches are responsible for keeping a
watchful eye on your child at both practice and games and for ensuring information is
disseminated to the squad and parents. They are also responsible for forwarding
information to parents related to game changes, practice cancellations and other logistical
information.
Coaches assume a large administrative role along with the responsibility of ensuring the
safety of your child. Please confirm with your coach that your contact information is
correct, including all telephone numbers and email addresses as well as medical data for
your child.
Lastly, coaches are volunteers and are helping to look after your child. Please be prompt in
picking up your daughter from practice. Please be sure to communicate directly with the
coach if someone other than the adult on our records it to be taking your child home from a
game or practice.
HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT-COACHES
High School coaches have been assigned to all squads and are responsible for helping the
squad progress their halftime routine and sideline cheers. These girls have volunteered
their time to help coach and are committed to attending practices and games. Please
show these girls a positive, energetic and respectful attitude.
High school coaches have completed safety training courses and are present to help the
coaches teach the girls’ proper cheerleading techniques. HS COACHES ARE NOT THE
PRIMARY COACHES OF THE TEAM ARE NEVER TO BE LEFT IN CHARGE OF A SQUAD.
TEAM MOM
Each squad will have at least one Team Mom assigned to their squad. The main role of the
Team Mom is to organize volunteers who will help sell cheerleading soft goods at home
games. The team mom will also help with the Twin Boro Bears’ fundraiser planning and
coordinate the end of the season banquet with the football team mom.
At times, the Team mom will act as Liaison between parents and coaches and can be
considered a person to be contacted with concerns.
SOFT GOODS
We will be selling Twin Boro Cheerleading Merchandise, with a portion of the proceeds
benefiting our cheerleading program at both out May fittings and during all home games. .
Merchandise for sale includes skorts, shorts, t-shirts, polo shirts, capri-sweat pants, pajama
pants and sweatshirts. You will have an opportunity to purchase these items at games or
through placing an order. Please note the soft goods sold are our cheerleading program’s
only major fundraiser and is NOT part of the Cheer Gear Sale.

The Proper Way to Cheer at a Football Game
By Valerie Ninemire, (About.com Cheerleading Guide)
Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to cheer at a football game.
Basically, it's a set of unwritten rules that govern what is considered proper and what is
not.
1. Arrive early so that the squad can set up and practice formations and go over cheers.
This is also a great time to warm up and stretch.
2. Before the game starts, your squad should walk over to the opposing team's
cheerleaders and greet them. This is entirely up to you.
3. If your squad does a "Hello" cheer, then it should be one of the first cheers at the start
of the game.
4. As you cheer during the game, make sure you're paying attention to what is happening
on the field. There are offensive and defensive cheers and you want to make sure you're
doing them at the correct time. Offense is when your team has the ball and defense is
when your opponent has the ball. So, you don't want to be hollering about a touchdown
when the other team has the ball. This is also when you want to make sure your motions
are sharp.
5. While you should be paying attention to the game, you'll also want to be facing the fans
and work on getting them involved (crowd involving cheers) in your cheers. Encourage
them to clap along with your squad and to say the words to your yells or cheers.
6. If an injury occurs on the field you should stop cheering immediately. The squad should
face the field and watch for the downed player to get up or to be carried off. When this
happens your squad should clap.
7. Although a football game is a big social event at most schools, it's not the time for
cheerleaders to socialize. Make sure the squad stays together and that they do not talk to
fans or friends for long periods of time.
8. Take a break at halftime if you need one or arrange for someone to bring you drinks if
you need them.
9. Always conduct yourself to a high standard. You should put safety, integrity, respect and
good sportsmanship at the core of your values.
10. After the game, clean up your area and make sure you gather all your things.
CONDUCT/ DISCIPLINARY MATTERS
Diversity makes the world go round! We must learn to put any and all differences aside. As
soon as we step onto the field, please remember we are a TEAM! I ask any conflicts you
may have towards anyone on the team (and with other parents) be kept at home and away
from practices and games.
BOTH cheerleaders and parents will be expected to respect fellow teammates, parents and
the coaching staff. All program participants, including coaches, parents and cheerleaders,
are required to abide by the Code of Conduct. We have implemented a Code of Conduct
Policy in an effort to alleviate any potential issues or conflicts. Each parent is required
to read and sign the Code of Conduct contained in this handbook.
Additionally, I value any and all comments from parents and ask if you encounter any
issues with any of the coaches or cheerleaders, you are to bring the matter to the attention
of the head Coach of the team for immediate resolution. The Coaches are required to
inform me of all situations and resolution/steps take to resolve the issue. If Coaches are
unable to resolve the issue or the issue involves a Coach, I will then become personally
involved to address and resolve the issue in a professional manner with no distractions to
the teams, girls, squads, etc.

any missing or misfitting items with the supplier.

determine need for replacement - sometime in April or May. Be available to help the week of cheer camp in
