INTRODUCTION
Knowledge management is an interesting subject of the moment with
lasting relevance to the library and information sector. Metadata is
structured data. Its characteristics are similar to the catalog and the index in
the library. It helps users find more precisely the information they need.
Metadata also provides an essential link to other contents. Today, it plays an
important role in managing the library collection to meet the users’ need.
Moreover, the core course in the library and information science, cataloging
and classification has been changed to metadata.
This three-day training programme is conducted by the famous
OCLC Institute, which was established in February 1997 in Ohio, USA. It is a
nonprofit educational organization dedicated to promoting the evolution of
libraries and information services by providing library leaders with
opportunities for advanced education and knowledge exchange. Since 1999,
an average of 50 seminars have been held each year in the U.S. with excellent
results. In the year 2000, the Institute conducted three advanced seminars in
China, two in Hong Kong, and one each in Taiwan and Thailand. Registered
participants ranged from 40 to 440. Tasked to handle the courses are:
Erik Jul, Executive Director, OCLC Institute
and
Hwa-Wei Lee, Ph.D.
OCLC Distinguished Visiting Scholar &
Dean Emeritus, Ohio University Libraries
AIM
The aim of the course is to help library and information professionals
to prepare themselves for rapid growth and growing challenges in
the digital knowledge of the 21st century.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES

To understand important aspects of knowledge management and
the current state of metadata and its expected long-term
development.

To learn to compare and evaluate the results of alternative
approaches and be able to plan, implement, or extend the use of
metadata in each of their own libraries.

To appreciate the special features of the Cooperative Online
Resource Catalog and the easy ways of creating “digital
pathfinders.”
