Press Release-ArbIQ
Arbitrary Resources Introduces ArbIQ, a
Powerful and Flexible Modulated Signal
Generation Tool for Arbitrary Waveform
Generators (AWG)
ArbIQ Software along with any Arbitrary Waveform Generator allows the design and
manufacturing engineer to create advanced multi-carrier wireless signals easily in a
wide variety of applications and test conditions. It can generate baseband and IF/RF
signals in both analog and digital formats so modern SDR (Software Defined Radio)
designs can be tested with one single signal source.
Barcelona, Spain, October 17th, 2011 – Arbitrary Resources, S.L., a R&D and Consulting
company for the T&M Industry, announced ArbIQ, a Wireless Signal Creation software
application for a wide range of Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWGs) from multiple vendors.
ArbIQ greatly simplifies the work of design and manufacturing engineers when it come to
obtain real-world stimulus to apply to the latest generation of wireless devices implementing
SDR (Software Defined radio) architectures.
ArbIQ allows creating digitally modulated signals in a wide variety of situations as it supports
the generation of high-quality baseband (IQ) and IF/RF signals in analog o digital format,
even simultaneously when applied to a multi-channel arb. It can create ideal or distorted
dissimilar multi-carrier signals where users can define all the modulation parameters and
distortions independently for each carrier. The ArbIQ package supports multiple generalpurpose modulation formats such as QPSK, QAM, or FSK, and, at the same time, it fully
supports channel-coded signals for applications such as mobile telephony (UMTS,
CDMAOne), wireless networks (802.11b, Zigbee, Bluetooth), or digital television (8/16VSB,
DVB-C). It even includes WiMedia and DVB-T sample signals, among others, for basic test
and educational purposes. ArbIQ’s flexibility and openness make possible targeting virtually
any AWG in the market, raging from value instruments up to state-of-the-art AWGs with
sampling rates beyond 10GS/s, no matter their vertical resolution, analog bandwidth, or
waveform memory size.
Standard features in ArbIQ include support for a variety of modulation schemes:

OOK, BPSK, QPSK, Offset-QPSK, DQPSK, /4-DQPSK, 8PSK, O-8PSK (EDGE).

QAM16/32/64/128/256/512/1024.

8/16VSB.

2/4/8/16/32FSK, GMSK.
Press Release-ArbIQ

ASK, bandwidt-limited Gaussian noise with crest factor control.

Symbol synchronous clocks, sinusoidal analog AM, PM, and FM.

CDMA (as per CDMAOne) and UMTS/3GPP downlink signals including full channelization
and synchronization information. 3GPP HSDPA and Compressed modes are also
supported.
A wide range of baseband filters allows generating accurate waveforms according to most
wireless standards. Product options add the capability to create RADAR and generic OFDM
signals.
ArbIQ is not a closed environment as users can import their own data, baseband filters, and
even IQ signals. It even incorporates a comprehensive constellation edition tool so users can
design their own modulation schemes right away. Examples such as DVB-S2’ 16 and
32APSK constellations are provided. An option allows exporting the data in a variety of binary
and ASCII-delimited formats so further processing and documentation through external tools
is possible.
"ArbIQ adds to any AWG the capability of generating complex and accurate digitally
modulated multi-carrier signals. Its flexibility allows any user to create any signal to be
applied to any point in the signal chain of any transmitter or receiver" said Joan Mercadé,
General Manager, Arbitrary Resources, "and it does so while fully exploiting the target AWGs
performance in terms of sampling rate, vertical resolution, number of channels and record
length. Ease-of-use and usability is a very important aspect so users are isolated from the
complex aspects of both the signals and the instruments while offering a very fast signal
compilation time.”
ArbIQ incorporates advanced algorithms to avoid, not only make-up, wrap-around artifacts
when signals are generated in continuous mode, and it does for all the carriers no matter the
carrier frequency, symbol rate, or modulation scheme.
Impairment Support
Margin and DSP algorithm test requires impaired signals. ArbIQ can add a variety of
impairments including the following:

Linear distortions: Carrier feed-through, quadrature error and imbalance.

Non-linear distortions: AM/AM, AM/FM, amplifier clipping.

Multi-path.

Power ramping.

I/Q delay.
Impairments may be applied to each carrier independently.

Analysis and Validation Tools
ArbIQ incorporated a wide range of analysis and visualizations tools in order to properly
validate and document any synthesized signal. Available tools make ArbIQ useful by itself for
educational purposes as it can show the most important characteristics of any modulation and
the effects of changing signal parameters in the modulation, time, and frequency domains.
Analysis tools include:

Constellation and Phase diagrams

Eye diagrams.

Spectrum.

CCDF (Complementary Cumulative Distribution Function) with crest factor analysis.

I/Q versus time.

Histogram, gray scale signal analysis in the IQ plane.
Application Specific Support
The standard ArbIQ package supports most test situation related with general-purpose
wireless and mobile telephony. Additional options support specific applications:

RADAR: Spread-spectrum, chirp generation, Barker-codes support.

Generic OFDM: It allows for the generation of user defined OFDM schemes. It also adds
pre-defined set-ups for DVB-T, IEEE802.11, WiMedia, WIMAX, and others.

Coherent Optical Communications: It adds specific signal parameters such as baseband
filtering and coding (RZ, NRZ), impairments such as CD and PMD, and analysis tools such
as power eye diagrams.
