GAME NOTES --- CLEAR LAKE vs. FOREST CITY
Game: Clear Lake vs. Forest City, Forest City High School, Friday, October 3rd --- 7:30 PM kickoff
Records:.
 Clear Lake (#2 Radio Iowa & AP, #3 in Des Moines Register poll) is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Class 3A District 2
after a 38-8 win over Charles City last week. The Lions finished the 2007 season with records of 7-3 overall
and 6-1 in Class 3A District 3. Clear Lake last season made their tenth straight playoff appearance and 13th
appearance in school history, being only one of five schools having an active streak of ten or more playoff
appearances.

Forest City (not ranked) is 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Class 3A District 2 after a 14-7 win over Iowa Falls-Alden
last week. Forest City finished 2007 with a record of 1-8 overall and 0-7 in Class 3A District 3 play. Forest
City has not qualified for the playoffs since they started in 1972.
Series History: Clear Lake’s series with Forest City is the longest in school history. This will mark the 77th time
the Lions and Indians meet on the field in a series that dates back to 1922. The two teams met in North Iowa
Conference play between 1922-1936 and continued their series another year before taking time off between
1938-1941, playing in 1942-43, before not playing in 1944. Clear Lake and Forest City have met every year since
1950, making it the longest running series in Clear Lake football history. Clear Lake holds a 52-18-6 advantage in
the series, including a 39-16-3 record since the series renewed in 1950. Clear Lake has won the last 14 games in
the series by a combined 554-120 margin. Clear Lake has posted 22 shutouts in the series, last being in 2002.
Clear Lake is 24-10-2 in Forest City.
Coaches:.
 Clear Lake head coach Fred Wieck is in his 21st season as head coach at Clear Lake. Wieck is 154-56 at
Clear Lake (1988-present) and 211-82 overall (29th season). Wieck has taken teams to the playoffs thirteen
times, including twelve Clear Lake teams. He won the state championship with Clear Lake in 2000, and won
with Garwin GMG in 1987, being one of only three coaches in history to win state championships at two
different schools, joined by Ken Winkler at Treynor (1979) and West Marshall (1999), & Gary Swenson at
Spencer (1994) and West Des Moines Valley (2002). Wieck currently sits tied for 30th place on the all-time
Iowa coaches wins list, and sits in the #17 spot among the active coaches on the wins list.

Forest City coach Chad Moore is in his fourth season with the Indians. He currently sports an overall record
of 24-44 and 10-23 at the school.

And then there were 11: The number of undefeated teams in Class 3A dropped from 13 to 11 after last Friday’s
games and losses by Charles City and Dallas Center-Grimes. There are 44 teams overall in the state that remain
undefeated (Six in Class 4A, seven in Class 2A, four in Class 1A, five in Class A, 11 in 8-Player). This is the 25th
season that Clear Lake has been undefeated through five games and the 20th time in 90 seasons that the Lions
have started out 5-0 (those other five times they didn’t start out 5-0….4-0-1 records in 1936, 1946, 1948, and
1970….3-0-2 in 1925)
Mr. Special Teams: Jake Kopriva’s 44-yard touchdown return against New Hampton gives the Lions’ junior his
third special teams touchdown in two games. Kopriva pulled the “double-double” against Humboldt, returning a
punt 72 yards against a touchdown and a kick return 87 yards for a score. In records kept since 1968, Kopriva
finds himself in the school record book, tying Scott Huntley who had two punt returns for touchdown in the 1973
season. Kopriva would become the first Lion to return two kickoffs for a touchdown if he can find his way to the
end zone again this season. Huntley would have been the first Lion since 1968 to return both a kickoff and punt
return for a touchdown in the same game, but the punt return was called by due to a penalty.
Rankings: Each week, six different sets of rankings come out for Class 3A football….the Radio Iowa sports
broadcasters poll, the Associated Press poll, the Des Moines Register poll, the Iowa Sports Connection poll, the
Iowa Preps-dot-com rankings, and the Brent Moore-ISU scientific rankings. Each week we will compile the
rankings and do a composite ranking, averaging out the rankings by awarding 10 points for a team ranked 1 s , 9
points for a 2nd ranked team, and so on.
