GAME NOTES --- CLEAR LAKE vs. HUMBOLDT Game: Clear Lake at Humboldt, Humboldt High School, Friday, August 28th ---- 7:30 PM kickoff Records:. Clear Lake (#4 Radio Iowa, #5 in Des Moines Register poll) finished 2008 with a 12-1 overall record and finished 7-0 in Class 3A District 2. The Lions made the semifinal round of the playoffs for the fifth time in school history, losing to eventual state champion Bishop Heelan of Sioux City 27-7. Clear Lake is one of ten schools that have made 11 or more straight playoff appearances in the history of the playoffs, and are one of five teams that have a current streak of at least 10 playoff appearances. Humboldt finished the 2008 season with a 1-8 mark overall and 1-6 mark in Class 2A District 2. After winning the Class 3A championship in 2006, Humboldt last year slipped down a classification to play in Class 2A’s District 2. Humboldt has qualified for the playoffs ten times in their school history, with their best finish being in 2006. Series History: The two North Central Conference members will be meeting for the 70th time, with Clear Lake breaking a tie in the series with their 58-20 win last year in Clear Lake. The teams did not play between 20022005, then met twice in 2006 with the Lions winning in a rain-delayed game in Humboldt before Humboldt’s championship game win over the Lions. Humboldt holds a series edge in games played at the Wildcats’ home with a 15-17-1 mark, with the overall series being 34-33-2 in favor of the Lions. Coaches:. Clear Lake head coach Fred Wieck is in his 21st season as head coach at Clear Lake. Wieck is 161-56 at Clear Lake (1988-present) and 218-82 overall (29th season). Wieck has taken teams to the playoffs thirteen times, including twelve Clear Lake teams. He won the state championship with Clear Lake in 2000, and won with Garwin GMG in 1987, being one of only three coaches in history to win state championships at two different schools, joined by Ken Winkler at Treynor (1979) and West Marshall (1999), & Gary Swenson at Spencer (1994) and West Des Moines Valley (2002). Wieck currently sits in 29th place on the all-time Iowa coaches wins list, and sits in the #17 spot among the active coaches on the wins list. Humboldt coach Greg Thomas is in his tenth season as the head coach of the Wildcats, sporting a 41-45 record. Thomas has guided Humboldt to two playoff appearances, including the 2006 state championship. Prior to coming to Humboldt in 2000, Thomas coached Galva-Holstein to three state playoff appearances. Thomas’ overall career win-loss record is 84-61. Series Histories: The following is a recap of the history of series that Clear Lake will play in this year.
