International Exchange Placements Cultural and creative organisations/businesses are invited to apply to take part in one of three International Exchange Placements. Each exchange will involve a nominated mid-career leader working in a matched overseas organisation for a period of three-months, offering that mid-career leader the opportunity to 'learn through doing'. The UK organisation will then reciprocate by hosting an individual from their matched overseas partner organisation for three-months. The exchange placements will also have guidance and support from respected leaders outside of their organisations. The exchange will develop in both the mid-career leader and the organisation intercultural understanding international leadership competencies the art of international hosting The exchange will allow cultural and creative organisations/businesses to develop their intercultural expertise through experiencing a culturally different working environment and procedures, helping to foster sustainable links for the future. For the nominated mid-career leader, the exchange will provide access to the leadership at all levels of the organisation within which they are placed to gain an overview of the cultural and strategic operating context as well as responsibility for delivery of a discrete project. We particularly welcome applications for exchanges with China, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The UK cultural and creative organisations/businesses1 are likely to already have a connection with their overseas partner of choice wish to develop links with a partner in one of the target countries, or be able to provide strong evidence of a commitment to identifying such a partner The exchanges can begin from April 2011, and must be completed by end of December 2011. For full details of CLP’s sector spread, please refer to http://www.culturalleadership.org.uk/context/ 1 1 Organisational and Person Specifications Cultural and creative organisations/businesses Have a demonstrable interest in developing their international profile and their intercultural hosting expertise Have a demonstrable interest in developing a relationship with a particular country and/or with a particular cultural or creative organisation/business overseas Have a recognised cultural leader that is willing to act as ‘champion’ for the activity within the organisation. This ‘champion’ must be able to nominate a member of their staff, a mid-career leader, whom they wish to participate in the exchange Be able to put forward a draft programme for the placement they are wishing to host, ideally involving a discrete piece of work Be able to describe why they consider this a valuable opportunity and what the experience might contribute to their organisation’s development Be building based i.e. have offices that can accommodate and support a placement Mid-career Leader Have a demonstrable track record as a ‘cultural operator’ in the UK arts sector Ability to operate in a foreign environment with a sense of confidence and openness Evidence of a desire to contribute to the intercultural understanding and knowledge of the relevant sector High level of interpersonal skills Understanding of networking and of the issues involved in engaging internationally Be available to undertake the overseas placement from April 2011 onwards Programme Management Visiting Arts will manage the logistical and financial arrangements involved in the scheme. Each placement will be tailor made in consultation with partners in order to ensure the placements meet the objectives of individuals and organisations involved. Mentors will help with the facilitation of this learning journey and offer support throughout the duration of the opportunity. The matching process will take place post selection and will be complete by April 2011. All participants (both from the UK and overseas) will be required to undertake their placement before the end of December 2011. The UK nominated individuals will undertake the exchange first, followed by the visiting exchange individual. Participants will take part in an evaluation process. Costs covered (in both directions) will include intensive language training where necessary, international flights, visas, accommodation, subsistence and a stipend. 2 Application Process To apply, please complete and submit the application form. Applications will be considered against the eligibility criteria and person specification. Successful organisations will be those who in the judgement of the selection panel best meet the criteria and will make best use of the opportunity. Shortlisted organisations will be invited to an interview. Organisations invited to an interview will be notified by telephone then letter by 7 March 2011. Interviews will take place on 17 March 2011. Both the champion and the nominated mid-career leader will be interviewed together. Successful and unsuccessful organisations will be notified by letter no later than 25 March 2011.
