“What’s Driving the Insurance Industry?
The Canadian Life Insurance Industry has experienced considerable change relative to company
mergers , consolidations and withdrawal from the market place . What drives this industry movement? Is
there still a chance that the banks will move directly into the insurance industry or will the insurance
industry move into banking ? What is driving the face of change within our financial institutions ? What
are the key elements of survival, continued growth and profitability ?
What are the major issues facing
our industry as we move forward ? Is underwriting still a pillar of corporate profitability? What growth
can we look forward to in a mature market place ?
Join us for an insightful industry keynote address as we Focus on the Future .

LABORATORY RESULTS:
Dr. Robert Stout, Ph .D
President / Director
“When Can Abnormal Tests,
Be Considered Normal?”
Clinical Reference Laboratory
Blood testing of insurance applicants was first introduced in 1 9 81 . Following the emergence of AIDS ,
the number of samples tested increased dramatically. The initial base blood profile included only 1 2
tests . But, as larger analyzers became available , more comprehensive test profiles evolved with more
than 24 tests being included . Test profiles were established based on their utilization in the hospital and
clinical markets with only minor concerns about how well the test identified mortality risk in a well
population . When insurance applicant results are analyzed , some tests provide no information on
mortality risk while others provide only minimal information . At this session Dr. Stout will discuss how to
use mortality results to drive test selection and how to eliminate unnecessary test(s).

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Master Cpl. Paul Franklin on Winning the Battle of his Life
Time magazine calls Master Corporal Paul Franklin "one of Canada’s heroes."
A new book tells his inspiring story... ..hear him tell it to the CIU
In 2 0 0 6 , a suicide bomber in Afghanistan attacked a vehicle carrying Paul Franklin .
Two of his colleagues were injured and a Canadian diplomat was killed . Though he
would lose both his legs , Franklin survived , keeping a promise to his wife that he
would return to see their family. Within months , and against incredible odds , he was
walking on artificial legs , and rebuilding his life at home . In The Long Walk Home ,
and in his speeches , Franklin inspires all of us— soldiers and civilians alike —who
wonder how they will take that next step when tough times challenge the body and
the spirit.

For the first time in CIU history we have three of the best known Doctors within the Canadian insurance
industry on stage . They will be addressing some of the most pressing issues of medical conditions that are
facing underwriters today.
But will they agree ? Or will there be a wide variance of opinion ? Can there be more than one approach to
resolving medical decisions that impact mortality and morbidity ?
The answers to these questions and more will be found in a fast and furious open discussion session that
promises to be both entertaining and educational.
