On the Occasion
Of the
Canadian Institute of Underwriters’
Annual General Meeting
June 2 – 3, 2016
Toronto, Ontario
It is the intent of the
Canadian Institute of Underwriters
that its member companies, and their employees,
must at all times comply with both
the letter and the spirit of anti-trust and competition laws.
Broadly stated, these laws prohibit any activities
that might lessen desirable competition
among insurance companies.
This meeting is not intended to permit
the formulation of any agreement,
expressed or implied,
which would in any way
restrict competition.

Dear CIU Members and Industry Colleagues:
Welcome to the CIU’s 30th Annual General Meeting in the beautiful city of
Toronto. Our theme this year is “Harness the Past – Unleash the Future” and
I’m so proud of the exceptional program the Executive Committee has
developed for you. Thank you to this team of dedicated professionals for
their countless hours of collaboration in putting this together including our
admin support – Marian Kingsmill and of course THANK YOU for choosing to
attend this conference!
I’d also like to thank all our industry speakers who agreed to share their
knowledge with us and to all the companies that support our speakers and
committee members’ involvement in the CIU. Our sponsors also deserve
recognition as without them, there would be no AGM.
In 2015-2016, we added “Connecting ^ Educating ^ Elevating” to our logo and
you can do just that during the next couple days. Be sure to Connect with
familiar industry colleagues and make some new connections. Educate
yourself and bring that valuable knowledge back to your everyday work.
Elevate yourself and our profession with involvement in this community.
Enjoy the various events going on Thursday and Friday: Mainstage,
Breakouts, Networking Breaks, EXPO, FALU breakfast and ceremony, EXPO
with Lunch, and don’t miss our fun filled evening of entertainment with the
ORANGEMAN happening on Thursday night during the reception. Bring your
dancing shoes – it is going to be spectacular!!
I look forward to speaking with many of you over the course of the
conference to hear your thoughts and ideas on the CIU as we continue to
evolve.
Sincerely,
Selena Puttick

PHARMACOGENETICS:
Forest Hill Ballroom
IT’S IMPACT ON THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY
Dr. Philip Smalley
Developments in biotechnology, genetics, and genomics are leading to molecular
genetic profiling, with this information then being used by physicians to guide the
treatment of specific diseases in an individual. Clinically, the impact of genetic
profiling has been seen for a number of years in the area of Pharmacogenetics, also
known as Pharmacogenomics.
Dr. Smalley of RGA International presents an overview of Pharmacogenetics and how
it is used to predict a person’s response to a particular therapy and the risk of side
effects from that therapy. Simply put, Pharmacogenetics looks at the role of genetic
variation on drug response. Identifying this genetic variation could have huge cost
savings through increased drug effectiveness, increased drug safety and fewer
adverse drug reactions. Dr. Smalley also looks at genetic profiling, as it relates to
Pharmacogenetics, and the potential effects this will have on the Insurance Industry.

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION
Forest Hill Ballroom
IN HEALTHCARE
Dr. Brian Goldman
With an aging population, an epidemic of chronic disease and strapped provinces,
health care is in serious need of a shake-up. Disruptive innovation is a process by
which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of
a market and then displaces established competitors.
ER physician and CBC host Dr. Brian Goldman gives us his take on the most likely
developments to take health care by storm - from health coaches instead of doctors
telling patients how to lose weight to apps that tell patients that they're having a
heart attack. He'll tell us why he thinks patient privacy is not as essential as
governments believe.

DRIVERS OF FUTURE MORTALITY:
Forest Hill Ballroom
WHY AREN’T WE DEAD YET?
Philippe Aussel
Originally featured as a breakout session at the 2015 CRC, this presentation
discusses, from a North-American and non-actuarial perspective, how population
growth and size have a major impact on socio-demographic needs in term of health
care, social and old age security, education, transport and infrastructure.
Their underlying components are two opposing forces, namely mortality and
longevity. Understanding their past and possible future key drivers is not only
important to the macro-economic planning of government agencies, but also to
pension funds, insurance companies, and other stakeholders of the financial and
insurance industries.

A Final Note
June 3, 2016
Dear CIU Members and Industry Colleagues:
I am honoured to be your incoming chairperson for the 2016-2017 term of the CIU
Executive Committee. We had such a great year in 2015-2016! The Executive
honoured their commitment to review, revamp and update all aspects of the CIU
platform. We worked hard in making online registration available, offered high
quality seminars, introduced monthly member profiles and quarterly membership
appreciation draws.
Your 2016-2017 Executive Team is just as committed. We will explore ways to reach
even more members by providing new opportunities to deliver educational
experiences. We are here to drive this process and encourage your engagement to
maintain high quality programs, new initiatives and relevance to our membership.
Education is the key to any profession and together we can make a difference.
In 2017, Canada will be celebrating 150 years of confederation. To mark this
occasion we will be holding the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of
Underwriters in Ottawa on June 5 & 6, 2017 at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel.
