Course Objectives: This course will introduce some general synthetic methods for the preparation of common classes of organic compounds, more techniques and procedures for the practice of experimental Organic Chemistry. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for Pre-Lab conference and Laboratory sessions. The maximum number of lab sessions that you are allowed to miss with any acceptable medical report or permission from your lab instructor is 2. You will have to do make up sessions at the end of the semester to complete these experiments. You must contact your lab instructor and lab assistant to arrange the time for these make up sessions before the last lab session of the semester. A pre-lab quiz missed due to tardiness will result in a grade of zero from that quiz. There will be no make-up quiz. A pre-lab conference missed due to tardiness will result in a zero grade for the entire experiment. You will have to attend the experiment as an observer and learn how to do the experiment because there will be questions related to that experiment in the final exam. Examinations and grading: Pre-Lab Quizzes Techniques Grades Report Sheet Final Examination Total 20 % 10 % 30 % 40 % 100 % Pre-lab Quizzes will be administered during the first 15 minutes of each lab period. Each Quiz will consist of 3 or 4 questions. A grade of less than 4/10 from the quiz is failure. The related experiment will be performed even if you fail in the quiz. Technical Grade will be determined by the lab assistant’s careful observation of the student’s work, obeying the rules, cleanliness and tidiness in the laboratory. Report Sheet entry will be written for each laboratory experiment. The asisstants will initial each write-up and make appropriate notes, comments, and observations about each one regarding format, clarity, completeness, grammar, and spelling. The format for writing your report sheet consists of two 1 parts: the pre-lab write-up, during the lab write-up and post-lab report. You must write your reports by using a computer, take its output and give it to your assistant. Reports should be submitted to assistants by next lab session before starting to the new experiment. Late work: Please adhere to the deadlines established for Report Write-ups. The penalty for late work will be -10% for each day past the deadline. You can just postpone your report sheet for maximum of 3 workdays. Final Examination will be a two-hour written test graded by the instructor. All students enrolled in the course will take the exam at the scheduled lab period for his/her session. Lab.
