DESIGN PROJECT
A design project will run parallel to the lecture series to enable participants to apply the knowledge gained from
lectures in practical problem solving with guidance from resource persons. At the end of lecture series, there will
be two practical sessions focusing on marking and turning out of a rotor blade and assembly, installation and
performance monitoring of a small wind generator.
LECTURERS
Dr.Thusitha Sugathapala, BSc (Eng), PhD (Cambridge) – Senior lecturer, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering,
University of Moratuwa. Having pursued aerodynamics in his doctoral work, Dr.Sugathapala devoted many
years on research in the areas of wind power and biomass energy. Dr.Sugathapala will deliver lectures on theory
of wind energy conversion, aerodynamic design of wind rotors and wind power applications.
Sunith Fernando, MSc (Eng) – Partner, Resource Management Associates (Pvt) Limited. Mr.Fernando has over
twenty years of experience in the field of wind power covering design & development of small wind machines,
technology evaluation of large wind projects and wind resource assessment. He has carried out number of
assignments related to wind power for several international agencies. Mr.Fernando will deliver lectures on wind
resource analysis, static & dynamic loads on wind machines, design of power control systems and mechanical
design of wind machines.
Dr.Tilak Siyambalapitiya, BSc (Eng) Hon, PhD (Cambridge), C.Eng, MIESL – Managing Director of Resource
Management Associates (Pvt) Limited, a leading consultant in the Sri Lankan energy sector. He has undertaken
numerous international assignments on power systems planning and electricity pricing. Dr. Siyambalapitiya will
deliver the lecture on financial analysis of wind projects.
Thusitha Padukka – BSc (Eng), AMIESL – Manager, Dendro Power Plant in Lanka Transformers Limited (LTL).
Prior to this, Mr.Padukka worked as the Factory Manager of LTL’s Steel Fabrications Plant. He has five years
experience in the design of electrical transmission line towers and switchyard structures. Mr.Padukka will
deliver the lecture on towers and foundations for small wind machines.
