The Govt. General Hospital, Kurnool, was started way back in the year 1911 in the chart of Kurnool Town, as a modest Headquarters
Hospital.
The reorganization of State and location of capital at Kurnool, this Headquarters Hospital was raised to the status of General Hospital with increased bed-strength during 1956. As a consequence, Kurnool Medical College and Govt.General Hospital came into existence from them.
Later, this Teaching Hospital is growing steadily and with starting of Postgraduate Courses in 1961. Thus, became a Post Graduate Teaching
Institution. Subsequently, Superspecialities one after another are started and added to Govt.General Hospital without proportionate increase in bed-strength, building, staff and equipment. Thus, Govt.General Hospital, Kurnool, today has the stature of its own kind of a large teaching
Postgraduate Hospital with Superspecialities.
The Govt.General Hospital, Kurnool, with an official bed-strength of 1000 is catering to the medical needs of all sections of people in particular poverty striken people in not only the Rayalaseema and adjoining districts but also of Karnataka.

Treadmill, Holter Monitor, Central Station Monitoring and Angiography. Similarly, the Dept. of Radiology has one 1000 mA X-Ray Machine which is a highly sophisticated one costing Rs.1.00 Crore. Besides this, there are three 500-mA; 700-mA & 300-mA attached to MMR, 60-mA portable X-ray machines and Two Ultrasound Machines.
