GATEWAYS TO PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE
UNITY & COHERENCE: Two Important Elements of a Good Paragraph
Unity
In addition to a clear topic sentence and adequate support, a good paragraph must have unity. A paragraph
has unity when all of the supporting sentences relate to the main topic and develop the controlling idea.
In order to achieve unity, you must make sure that you do not include any information that is not relevant to
the main point stated in the topic sentence. Any sentences that do not support the topic are considered
irrelevant and should be eliminated.
Task 1. Each paragraph below has two irrelevant sentences. Find them and write the numbers of the
sentences in the blanks provided.
1. (1)Teachers can take several steps to prevent students from cheating on exams. (2)To begin with, they
can stop reusing old tests. (3)Students always check with their friends to find out what was on an exam
the previous year. (4)Therefore, they may know the questions and the answers before the exam.
(5)Another step that teachers can take is to make students sit separately during an exam.(6)By placing
students with one seat between them, the teacher can easily prevent cheating. (7)Students are sometimes
allowed to use electronic dictionaries in exams. (8)In addition, teachers can sit in the back of the room,
where they can clearly see what each student is doing. (9)By seeing each student, they may be able to
warn the students who attempt to cheat. (10)Finally, teachers can penalize the students who are involved
in cheating. (11)One of the problems with our school systems is the lack of discipline. (12)Any student
who is caught cheating can immediately be given a zero for the exam.

Coherence
By now you should realize that an effective paragraph needs a clear topic, adequate support, and unity.
One more component of a good paragraph is coherence. In a coherent paragraph, the sentences are
arranged so that the ideas are in a logical order. In order to achieve coherence, you need:
1. A clear plan of arrangement
2. Repetition of key words through pronouns
3. Transitions to connect your ideas
1. Arrangement
There are several standard ways to arrange your information so that your writing will be coherent. Three
of the most basic ways are time order, spatial order, and order of importance.
The way you choose to arrange your information depends on the kind of paragraph you are writing. If
you are explaining a sequence of events or telling a story, the logical arrangement of ideas and
sentences will be chronological, that is, according to time order. If you are describing the way
something looks or its physical characteristics, you will arrange your details according to the position
of the objects being described or where they are located. In this case you will use spatial order. Finally,
if you are listing examples, causes, effects, reasons, or purposes, you will probably use order of importance. In this type of paragraph, you either begin with the least important item and end with the most
important one, or vice versa.
2. Repetition of key words through pronouns.
A good paragraph has links which help to tie it together. One of the commonest is that repeated words
become pronouns. You studied this kind of link in the first span, Writing Handout II (Referencing).
e.g. There is a lot of gold in sea water. Scientists, inventors, and swindlers have tried to make their
fortune from it. Only the swindlers…
Note: When there may be misunderstandings or when the repeated noun comes a long way after it is
first mentioned, the full noun is used. Look at this example:
After the cream is separated from the milk, it is made into butter.
This sentence is confusing because it could refer to either cream or milk. Therefore you would change
it to the full noun, the cream.
3. Transitions
Transitions are signals that show the connection between one idea and the next. They are important
because they guide the reader through a paragraph. The following lists give some common transitions
that will help make your paragraphs more coherent. There are many transition words and phrases in
English that are used to connect sentences together or relate ideas to one another. You will learn these
transitions as you study different types of paragraphs in the second semester.
