Retail Area Manager – Bexhill and Rother West
REPORTING TO:
Chief Executive Officer

Trading Company Board of Directors
SALARY:
£18,500 pro-rata 25 hours per week (full time is 37.5
hours)
Bexhill, Endwell Road
LOCATION:
HOURS PER WEEK:
Standard hours are 5 hours per day 5 days in 7 ( to
include Saturdays on rotation). The arrangement of
hours is to be agreed. This position requires
flexibility and it will be necessary to regularly work
outside these times.
OVERALL PURPOSE

Provide overall leadership and operational management for the shops, warehouse and related staff
and volunteer teams within the Bexhill and Rother West area

To ensure that all Area financial and customer satisfaction targets are met or exceeded; you will
have responsibility for delivering the maximum revenue potential of the shops and related
commercial activities

Ensure that all staff and volunteers are achieving the standards and quality of service required by
the Trust. Support the shops in achieving the effective implementation of the policies, aims and
objectives of the Trust

Develop and implement in conjunction with the Trust Fundraising Manager, shop and community
based marketing and promotion opportunities for the Trust and Trading Company

Support the development and maintenance of other commercial activities to increase revenue
streams including e-commerce and recycling

Reporting to the CEO, to develop and implement improvement strategies to increase the sales and
revenue potential of the Area trading activities

Ensure efficient and effective logistics; management of the Trading Company warehouse in Bexhill
and its donation supply to all the Charity Shops

Oversee the setting up of any new shop in the area, assist with design and fitting, recruit the
volunteers and launch the shop

Identify potential shop and other commercial opportunities to the Trust CEO

Main Responsibilities:
Management and Communication
To:

provide effective leadership, line-management, motivation and support to the Shop Supervisors and
Warehouse Team and manage day to day activities to support them to meet their financial
objectives

line manage, supervise and develop the Shops Teams, including regular performance reviews,
appraisals and personal development plan setting; identifying training needs to ensure high quality
services and achievement of annual work plans

create and maintain a learning environment for all shops team members providing regular
supervision and support as required to provide effective direction

ensure the shops are run in a profitable and professional way in line with the Trading Company
brand and Trust ethos

be responsible for managing the recruitment, placement, induction, ongoing training and support of
all volunteers for the shops, warehouse, house clearances and other associated initiatives

co-ordinate staffing across the area to ensure effective staffing levels at all times and manage team
leave arrangements

establish support and on call arrangements to provide effective team support throughout the
working week (including weekend opening times)

participate in annual Leave and other leave cover arrangements in the absence of the Charity Shop
Supervisors and / or Hastings, St Leonards and Rother East Area Manager

oversee the management of the shops and trading operations in the absence of Shop Supervisors
and / or Hastings, St Leonards and Rother East Area Manager

participate and contribute to the development of project plans for any future trading or commercial
developments

work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other Staff and Trustees of the SLT

develop and facilitate good communication – sharing best practice, training plans etc to ensure cooperation and support for staff and a “whole team” approach

attend internal and external meetings as required
Volunteers
To:
 Contribute to and implement the overall Trust Volunteer support strategy
 support the Shops Supervisors in the area to manage the Volunteer Teams
 ensure that all management policies / procedures for SLT Trading Company volunteers are
implemented and adhered to;

keep volunteers informed and up to date;

liaise with schools and colleges and organise the placement of students for work experience

manage the placement of candidates from Job Centres and Volunteeer support agencies

ensure proper legal arrangements and obligations relating to volunteers are met.
Finance
To:

check the day sheets and reconcile the daily takings with the till cash receipts;

be responsible for the banking of cash takings;

In conjunction with the Trust Finance & Admin Assistant and CEO, monitor income and expenditure
reports for each shop to ensure operation within budget and achievement of maximum potential.

maintain effective financial control and to take corrective action as and when required

managing key performance targets within the shops through regular reviews with the Shops
Supervisors and Team. Performance managing shops team to achieve set out targets.

be responsible for the shops budget across the Trust and maintaining appropriate stock levels;
liaising with the Hastings, St Leonards and Rother East Area Manager regarding the purchase of
shop supplies as and when required and purchasing for both Areas.

Be responsible for the achievement for financial performance targets;
House Clearances, Collections & Deliveries
To:

to assist in collections of goods donated as required;

undertake home visits as appropriate to assess potential furniture donations and house clearances.
Stock Control
To:

be responsible for the sorting and allocation of all stock at the warehouse arranging Area Manager,
Shop Supervisor and volunteer support as required;

monitor stock control within the Charity Shops;

To work with the person responsible for E trading & other commercial activities to ensure items of
potential value are assessed and sold for the most benefit to the Charity e.g. jewellery, paintings,
antiques& other collectables

Administration
To:

prepare regular staff & volunteer bulletins;

monitor and review the management policies / procedures for volunteers;

maintain appropriate individual records for volunteers and statistics of voluntary work performed;

be aware of, and comply with, all SLT and Statutory Policies and Procedures as appropriate;

produce timely regular monthly service performance reports/reviews as required by the CEO

ensure accurate up-to-date statistics are maintained;
Fundraising & Marketing
To:

plan, implement and evaluate approved fundraising and marketing projects through the Charity
Shops;

support the Fundraising Manager by encouraging the promotion of fund-raising initiatives through
the Charity Shops;

identify opportunities for initiatives that will lead to an increase in shop donations, sales and general
fundraising opportunities for the Trust through the Trading Company;

in agreement with the CEO attend relevant local Voluntary and Business networking events to
represent and promote the work of the Trust and provide feedback and information on opportunities
that may arise;

in conjunction with the Fundraising Manager develop a programme of regular updates regarding the
Trading Company for Facebook and other social media;

participate in the on-going review of the SLT website and other publicity material with regard to the
Trading Company.
Health & Safety
To:

comply with all Sara Lee Trading Health and Safety Policies and Procedures;

ensure that all team members within the Area are aware of all relevant legislation and are kept upto-date with Trust developments as well as any policy or procedural change

monitor the health & safety and fire risk assessments for each shop, warehouse and Trust vehicle;

participate in providing a safe environment within the shops and warehouse that protects all staff,
volunteers and the public.

To:

keep up to date on volunteering issues and developments;

undertake training and development as identified through the individual performance review
process.
An annual performance review and 6 month review will be undertaken by the Chief Executive Officer.
However, there will be regular on-going review and the post holder may request an informal review at any
time

