PERSONAL TUTORING
VLE organisation for personal tutoring
Introduction
All personal tutors have an organisation in the VLE for use with personal tutees.
This area has not been configured or populated with any data, and is for use at
the tutor’s discretion. This document will provide some suggested uses for the
VLE tutoring organisation.
1. Accessing the VLE tutoring organisation
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
Log in to the VLE at http://vlebb.leeds.ac.uk or via the portal at
http://portal.leeds.ac.uk.
On the Home tab, scroll down past the modules to the list of
organisations that you are a member of.
Select the organisation called “08/09 Your Full Name (random
number)”.
You will need to make the organisation visible to students
(Control panel > Settings > Module Availability).
Only you and your tutees can access this organisation. Personal tutors
have been assigned as leaders of the organisation and have full control
over the tools available. Note that the levels are not grouped in any
way, so all your tutees will be able to see all resources, unless you
configure the access manually (see Section 3 below).
2. Using the VLE tutoring organisation
You can use this organisation in a number of ways to maintain a good tutor area
for your students. However, it is entirely up to you how you configure and use
the area – you may wish to change all of the menu items, or add additional
areas / tools. Below are some ideas of how to use this resource:
a. Announcements
You can send targeted announcements to your tutees – these will be visible
in the VLE and the Portal. You may wish to send announcements about
forthcoming research talks, careers events, university events etc.
b. Information
You can include any information in this area that you wish. You may wish to
include links to other areas of the VLE (e.g. the UG School organisation
which contains many links to student support services), or direct links to
relevant areas of the university website (e.g. LUU, Student Support,
Counselling etc). You may wish to include a link to your FBS website, or a
brief paragraph about yourself, so your tutees can find out a little more about
you.
You are strongly advised to create a link to the Leeds for Life website
from
your
personal
tutorial
organisation
(http://www.leeds.ac.uk/leedsforlife).
c. Documents
You can include any documents in this area that you wish. You may wish to
include a copy of the PDP or tutorial progress files in this area.
d. Discussion forum
You may find it useful to set up a discussion room in your tutoring
organisation – for detailed instructions of how to do this, see
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/staff/guides/disc.htm. A discussion room may be
useful for your tutees to get to know each other better.
3. Setting up groups in the VLE tutoring organisation
You may find it useful to set up groups within your tutoring organisation so that
you can provide different information to students in different years. For detailed
information about how to set up groups in a VLE area, see
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/staff/guides/groups.htm. Once established, you can
use groups to send targeted announcements, view resources, filter discussions
etc.
For more detailed information about how to use the VLE tools, please see
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/staff/index.htm.
