Foreigners purchase Israeli property at record pace
Overseas buyers invested $683 million in Israeli real estate between January
and May.

While Israelis are investing in income-producing real estate overseas, foreign investors have
continued to purchase luxury properties in Israel. Foreign investment in Israeli residential properties
and income-producing properties totaled $683 million in January-May 2007, the Bank of Israel
reported. Of this, $209 million worth of property was purchased in May alone.
This represents an annual investment of rate of a record $1.64 billion, compared with $1.44 billion in
2006 and $1.22 billion in 2005.
Fischer among IMF candidates

Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer has been mentioned as one of the candidates
for the post of International Monetary Fund chair, the "Financial Times" reported. The speculation
follows last week's announcement by current chairman Rodrigo Rato that he would be stepping
down in October for personal reasons.
Other candidates for the post are Trevor Manuel, South African Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel,
former governor of the central bank of Brazil Arminio Fraga, Bank of England Governor Mervyn
King, and Head of Harvard Investment Management Ltd Mohammed El-Erian .
Bank of Israel sources said in response, that no approach had yet been made, and that the bank could
not comment on hearsay. The role of IMF chairman has always gone to a European, and the choice
of candidate is made in consultation with the US president, with Germany, France and the UK
playing a key role in the final selection.
Fischer previously served in a number of senior roles in the IMF and also challenged Rato for the
post of IMF chairman. Should the post of Bank of Israel governor fall vacant, the candidates will
include, Prof. Manuel Trajtenberg, economic adviser to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Deputy Bank
of Israel governor Prof. Zvi Eckstein, and Victor Medina, who challenged Fischer for the post on the
previous occasion.
Israel in fourth place among defense exporters

Israel is the world’s fourth largest defense exporter, after the US, Russia, and France, and ahead of
the UK. Israeli defense exports total $3.4 billion.

Yosi Ben-Hanan says that Israel’s defense exports to the US grew from $270 million in 1999 to $1.2
billion in 2006. He added that US supervision of Israeli defense exports has cost Israel $300 million
over the past three years. Suspect Detection Systems Ltd. (SDS) chairman Giora Eiland, the former
chairman of the National Security Council, added that the loss was smaller than Israel had thought.
Israeli exports of homeland security and safety equipment, excluding information security, will grow
20% this year, compared with 15% growth in 2006, to $1.2 billion. 30 new companies entered this
field over the past year, to a total of 350 exporters. IT security exports totaled $2 billion.
Frost & Sullivan: Israel biomed industry growing fast
80% of Israel’s currently operating life sciences companies were founded in
the past 10 years.

“Israel has developed a large biomedical industry (medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and
biotechnology) and it is a global leader in terms of innovation. This can be seen in the huge number
of patents registered in Israel, the largest number of patents per capita in world for medical devices,
and the fourth largest number in biopharmaceuticals. Israel is one of the top 20 countries in spending
per capita in the field,” says Frost & Sullivan in a report on Israel’s biomedical industry.
Israel looks to partner with foreign biotech cos

“We’re seeking to set up a joint government-corporate biotechnology fund with $300-500 million,”
said Chief Scientist Dr. Eli Opper at the ILSI-Biomed 2007 conference in Tel Aviv, organized by
Israel Life Sciences Industry. “We announced the plan at the last conference. We’re also in advanced
negotiations with several global biotechnology companies for the establishment of development
centers in Israel and to collaborate through joint ventures. We’re also working to set up
biotechnology and nanotechnology R&D centers at universities, including nano-biotech, as well as
another biomedical incubator.”
There are some factors that contribute to biomedical success in Israel, such as Israel’s level of
education and the entrepreneurial spirit of the people, the research institutes and top universities, the
high quality of medicine, fairly inexpensive labor costs and existing financing for early-stage
companies. He also cited factors that are not usually considered Israeli advantages, such as
government support, protection of intellectual property rights, cultural mixing, a global perspective,
and even the experience in developing one product Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.’s.

 Gross Domestic Product reached 160,551 NIS millions in the first quarter of 2007, growin
by 4.5%.
 The Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained unchanged at 99.4 points in May, contrary to
market estimates which had predicted that it would fall by 0.2%. The sharp 17.3% rise in
prices of fruits was the factor that dispelled earlier forecasts. This item alone contributed
0.2% to the May figure for the CPI.
 Unemployment rate continues to fall, reaching 7.7%, compared to 7.8% reported in the
previous quarter, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported.
 The Central Bureau of Statistics reports that exports of goods, excluding diamonds, rose by
an annualized 14% in March-May 2007, in trend figures. Israel’s trade deficit narrowed to
$2.7 billion in January-May: exports totaled $18.3 billion and imports totaled $21 billion. The
trade deficit in May was $400 million: exports totaled $4.2 billion and imports totaled $4.6
billion.
 The Bank of Israel reports that foreign direct and portfolio investment totaled $1.03
billion in May 2007. Foreign investment in Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) stocks and
bonds totaled $411 million, although net investment in TASE-listed stocks fell by $172
million. Foreign direct investment totaled $617 million.
 The State Budget registered a surplus of NIS 1.1 billion for May, bringing the cumulative
surplus since the start of the year to NIS 8.3 billion, as against NIS 8.4 billion for the
corresponding period in 2006.
 The Bank of Israel reported today that the composite State of the Economy Index rose by
0.7% in May, indicating a continued rise in economic activity. The index has now risen 1.6%
over the last three months.
 The Israeli economy grew by an annualized 6.3% in the first quarter of 2007, after growing
by 7.3% in the preceding quarter, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported.
 Business product grew by an annualized 6.5% in the first quarter.
 The standard of living rose by an annualized 10%.
 Israel’s current-account surplus was $1.7 billion in Q1-2007 as against $1.8 billion in the
previous quarter (both figures seasonally adjusted).
