Lynn noted that last year Israel's trade balance reached the $100 billion mark, export of goods totaled $46.4 billion and import totaled $47.8 billion. Israel, according to Lynn is already a major player whose purchasing power interest many European countries. In so far as service exports, Lynn noted that a dramatic increase in export of services was registered in 2006. According to Lynn, total export of services reached the level of $19.6 billion, representing 10% increase compared to 2005. In 2006 export of services was 14% of the GDP and 31% of Israel's total exports. Israel places 2nd in patent applications to Europe (YnetNews) Israel is second place in the number of applications filed by local companies and bodies for patent registration in Europe, according to a Business Data Israel (BDI) study. The data, valid for 2005, applies to non-European countries filing patent requests, and is relative to each country's population. Taking first place was Japan, with some 168 patent requests, followed by Israel with some 112 requests. The United States came in third with some 111 requests, followed by Korea with about 79, Canada with about 54 and Australia with 44. In 2006, Israel came in fourth place in the number of patents that were approved and registered in the United States with 178.5 patents per 1 million residents, marking an 18 percent rise from 2005, where it came in fifth place. “Economist”: Tel Aviv 47th in cost-of-living table (Globes) “The Economist” has published its ranking of the world’s 132 most expensive cities. Tel Aviv, the “city that never sleeps” is ranked 47th. The top ten cities include Oslo, Paris, Copenhagen, and London, followed by Tokyo and Osaka. Eight cities in the top ten are all in Europe: the others are Reykjavik, Zurich, Frankfurt and Helsinki. The survey demonstrates that Europe is more expensive that the US. Unexpectedly, New York is only in 28th place, although it is the most expensive city in the US. The cheapest city in the list is Teheran, although tourists will probably give it a wide berth at this time. Why haven’t New York and Tel Aviv claimed a higher place in the rankings? The reason is that real estate is not one of the criteria, which only comprise a basket of 160 goods and services, including restaurants, fuel, electricity, taxis, cigarettes, and other items from toothpaste to theater tickets. For the sake of comparison, the survey’s baseline (100) is New York. Oslo gets a score of 134, and London 125. Moscow, in 26th place and which has the world’s most expensive real estate, has a score of 101. “The Economist” says, “Old Europe has become old and expensive Europe.” Bank of Israel soundness indicators conform to international standards Israel’s risk premium on international markets is now 0.22%. The Bank of Israel has published, for the first time, regular indicators of financial stability, some of which are also published on the website of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This is part of an international project in which some 60 countries are participating, to promote the preparation and publication of comparable data on levels of stability in these countries' financial systems. The data, presented in three tables that the Bank of Israel has begun to publish on a regular basis, are essential for the monitoring and analysis of developments in Israel's financial stability. The first table shows indicators of the stability of Israel's financial system, according to the IMF's list; the second table presents indicators that the Bank uses for monitoring and analyzing financial stability, which up till now have been presented only in the Bank's annual report, including indicators on the nonbanking sector that are not included in the first table; while the third table shows comprehensive and detailed data on general credit (from banking and non-banking sources) in the economy, which are important for analyzing economic activity and financial stability, particularly in connection with the spread of credit risk in the economy and improvements in the credit market.
