Chairman’s Report

A successful club

’s future lies within the success of its Juniors. If this is the case, Auckland

Marist is extremely well placed. 2009 has been another huge and greatly successful year for our Junior Club.

I would like to extend my upmost thanks to Eva and her Junior Committee. Additionally, to all of the coaches and volunteers she coerces into assisting. Without all of your assistance, hundreds of kids would miss out on the game we are all so passionate about.

This year we also welcomed Marist Eastern into the Marist Family. Jack Hill, Chopper

Casey and his team of enthusiastic and passionate parents have ensured rugby now reaches a whole new group of players. We have seen the number of Juniors increase in

2009 and this is largely down to an increase in the catchment area and attracting new players to rugby.

The future is bright for Auckland Marist, if the current Junior crop is anything to measure by and I know 2010 will bring even further success.

Congratulations to all of the players. Thank you to all of the coaches, volunteers, parents and supporters.

I look forward to seeing you at Liston Park in 2010

Junior Delegate Report

By its very nature, this report tends to air the excitement, enthusiasm and the success of the

Juniors we have enjoyed this season. A momentous year for the Junior Club. For my part, this season ’s objectives have been very much focused not only on player development, but mostly enhancing value for membership, and growing team/player affiliation and retention. It is certainly intended to be the underlining theme for our junior division Club strategic plan.

Since committing ourselves the last twelve months by way of the strategic plan to pursuing these objectives, our Junior Committee have not held back in making headway on some of those initiatives. The approach has very much been to eye these developments as opportunities that we must move relatively quickly in attracting players in a competitive sense, and compete for the same space.

Taking the opportunity in that space saw our Club forming alliance with Marist Eastern and Tamaki

RFC. As a result the real success is evidenced by our enjoying the growth in junior player numbers – combined juniors registered in 2009 is just close on 800 kids, age between 3 and 16 years old and over 50 teams were formed under the Auckland Marist umbrella. Indeed, our Junior

Club is in a very strong position and long may this continue. Looking ahead, the objective is to make the most of this alliance recognizing its special nature and relevance.

New alliance and gaining new Members is part of the equation but retention of course is the real key to long term growth. Here in retention terms we are enjoying equal success especially since launching our new Club website for junior teams. Specifically that website reported team members performance during the course of the season, and a tool that enable each team member to communicate to others and augment their awareness of th e Club’s success overall.

In the meantime, the fact the Junior Club is going so well only spurs on our enthusiasm heading into next year. As I say, 2009 is a year to be proud of and again emphasise that the Club ranking today as one of Auckland’s most successful Club still has tremendous potential. If one reflects only on the developments mentioned in these introductory remarks, let alone the subject matter in this report it very much paints the picture of Junior Club growing literally from strength to strength.

We have demonstrated this strength in our encouraging Team Management positive participation and collaboration whereby we hold monthly meetings, giving the opportunity to our volunteers to present ideas as they deem fit for the teams. It is not “them and us” – it is team work, and united for the success of the Juniors.

Emphasizing further on that success, I am pleased to report on individual teams, and how each team performed during the season. Team performance are being reported further in this report but wish to highlight significant achievements as follows:

2009 Marist Pompallier Teams Championship for their grade – Marist U10 Restricted, and Marist Under 13 Restricted Sacred Heart.

2009 ARFU U13 Restricted championship – Auckland Marist

2009 Walter Dixon (Remuera East) – 22 Players from Marist

2009 Roller Mills – 12 Players from Marist

2009 Under 45s – 3 Players from Marist

Outstanding achievements, and we could not be more proud of how many of our players tackled the challenges of 2009 head on!

(3)

Not surprisingly our aim is to make next year as special as possible, at the same time emphasising that the Club is as relevant today as it was and next year will see our hopefully launching even more services with that relevance in mind. Looking to 2010 focus on how we can reward the loyalty to those who have been long standing members of the Junior Club. How we can keep our

Club junior rugby modules fresh, vibrant and relevant. Better things lie ahead.

I will now take this opportunity to thank very special supporters/volunteers who have been here with me and for the kids and no doubt have enjoyed another successful season.

We had a great team of lads this year. A couple backed up from last year and a bunch of new starters with their first taste of the beautiful game. We also had a wonderful group of parents and supporters who week in week out were always there.

The weather also played its part this year which allowed the kids to really develop their skills over the season. From the first few games where the kids were running in all directions to the well oiled group of professionals we have now. Great stuff!!

As always it’s about the kids and their enjoyment of the game and we sure had a bunch a characters this year. Who knew 4-5 and 6 year olds could ask so many questions?. We had the great rippers, the great try scorers, the great defensive players and the great talkers!!.

We appreciate all the work Eva, Sharon and Theresa and the club put into the juniors this year and thank them all for the opportunity to boogie at the disco!!

Well done to all the kids this year and again thanks to all the parents for their support. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year for another great season

Remember-- Rugby was always the winner on the day!!

As I write this we still have two games to go in the season and what an awesome season it’s been for our team. The boys really got into their rugby this year, developing their range of skills and playing with a strong team spirit. As yet we are unbeaten after 12 competition games, which is a fantastic achievement, put that down to their determination to get to the try line & a defence that got stronger each game. It was also great to see the total enjoyment they all got out of playing rugby, whether at training or during the match the boys were totally into it.

A highlight for us was at the beginning of season when we went to play before the Blues game at North Harbour Stadium, it was a great afternoon & really well run by the NZRU, it’s something I hope they get to do again.

So well done boys, right from the start you’ve played some exciting & often hard fought games of footy…bring on the tackling next year!

Thanks to John Sullivan for helping out at training & reffing games, Ian Hankins our official scorer and to the parents & supports who cheered our team on every Saturday morning.

Also our thanks to; Eva, Theresa & Sharon for all their work and support over the season.

The Marist U7 Blue team bought some talent and experience from last year and some new boys to the oval ball game. It also was the first season of Ripper Rugby which has been a vast improvement for the boys on the field and parents on the sideline. Ripper Rugby opened up a lot more running rugby and encouraged the boys to look for gaps and sidestep their way to the line - it even saw one attempt of the goosestep that fooled everyone! We have continued to be very lucky with a the support and dedication of the parents who battled all sorts of weather and conditions to follow the boys each week - which was greatly appreciated by the coaches, and of course the boys.

This team formed a great bond together and supported each other magnificently. They all looked for the ball to run with and equally we managed to get the passing along the line going before the rip was even made. Every one had a lot of fun and was fully involved in every game - no seagulls this year and no overall individual boy took over every game - which has certainly made this end of year award allocation incredibly difficult. All the boys got on the score sheet a number of times and there were always high fives for all throughout the game.

There are so many highlights for this year - a couple of the new boys started off like scared rabbits chasing everything and everyone …. but they soon found the try line and very quickly learned to get close to the boy with the ball and call if they wanted to be passed to. They also quickly learned that they would get a huge cheer from the parents if they ripped those tags! We had the tearaways that ran round everyone and hugged the sideline for their trys - the sidesteppers who would find gaps that others didn’t see and the big boys that installed fear into the opposition with their display of hidden speed and the occasional fend (despite this never being taught in training!!!)

So well done to all the boys and we know they had a very enjoyable season. From the coaches and manager - this team was a pleasure to be with and to coach - the boys wanted to learn and they were always there for training and always at the game early - most of all they listened and were respectful to their coaches, the referees and the opposition - a real credit to the Marist jersey.

Although the “Monsters” did not chalk up a lot of wins this season, it can still be seen as a successful one in terms of team development. We have seen constant improvement in all our players and this has been reflected in the significantly reduced margins against a couple of teams which beat us convincingly in the first round. We found ourselves in a very tough section for this grade, comprising four Ponsonby, two Eden & Marist St Josephs and ourselves. Although in most cases we were up against larger squads of older and bigger players (the bulk of this team will still be eligible for this grade next year) we remained highly competitive, the majority of our results being narrow losses.

Most importantly the Team had fun, they enjoyed all their games and played some highly entertaining Rugby. There is definitely a lot of potential here, with some of the best steppers in the grade. Many thanks to all our parents, families and friends for the fantastic support you have shown for all the team. I know it has made a difference to the kids having you on the sidelines cheering and they appreciate it. Many thanks to Monte Cecilia school for the support and use of the grounds. Many thanks to Eva and her team for the considerable time and effort they put in to organising the Junior Rugby at Marist.

Cheers

Ant & Nick.

The season started with a hiss and a roar with numbers in double figures. As with any team the numbers dwindled to single digits during the season (maybe due to swine flu I think) only to resurface towards the end of the year. The core group of players like Christain, Malakai, Benjamin,

Cornelius, Karlos, Ron, Tafeuni, Ziggy, Napolean and later editions of Douglas and Liam bolstered numbers and carried the Marist St Josephs name and colours with pride week in and week out. We won as many as we lost. We ripped the tags and gave it back to the opposition players with sportsmanlike conduct in the spirit of the game only to have our tags ripped and thrown away., go figure.

The St Josephs U7s deserve to be the team of the year due to their never ending belief that rugby is fun, fair play and showing sportsmanship at all times.

Special mention to our manager Lagi Mona who took over after the original manager who left abruptly, so thanks for her tireless efforts. Also to our parents and supporters who stuck with the team throughout the season. Most supportive parent would have to go to Line Terepo who is affectionately known as Bens Mum (her son also plays in the U10s). She would shout the boys sweets, chippies and soft drinks at times and also not only wash the U7s jerseys but also the U10s jerseys. Her banter, jokes an daughter on the sideline was very entertaining at times. Thanks to the coaches Anna Fariu, Kahn Powell and Jennifer Amituanai from Academy New Zealand sports course who trained the boys and attended Saturdays. Big thank you to all parents and supporters throughout the season see you next year!

The Marist Under 8 Restricted team have had a great year. It is a new team with many of the players playing rugby for the first time so it took a few games to get to know the rules and the other players. Every game has seen an improvement with some outstanding tries and outstanding defence, particularly during the latter part of the season.

Our results have been great - The Marist Under 8 Restricted team has beaten every team except for two and have won all our home games . Our second half is our strength with the team usually piling on the points in the second 20 mins.

A big thank you must go to the parents who have supported the kids throughout the season. It is great to here the cheers from the sideline when a try is scored or a tackle is made. A big thank you also needs to go to the kids who have made the season great fun.

Thanks Eva, Theresa and Sharon for all your efforts over the season.

Thank you.

Marist Under 8 Open have had an exceptional season this year, considering a huge transition for most of our boys from tag rugby to tackle rugby. Our first games were very amusing to watch as the boys weren't sure whether to tag or tackle. However, with perseverance and persistence.

Coach Sonny Pihigia managed to drill some of his footy skills into the boys, especially the Niuean power tackle. A secret skill that we, the under 8 open team have vowed never to share it with any of our Marist Junior teams The boys have had some incredible wins this season. Awesome power tackles and amazing tries! Of course this team would have not existed without the support of our wonderful parents, family and friends.

On behalf of the boys and parents from the under 8 open team, we would like to thank our coach

Sonny Pihigia for sacrificing his family time to train the future 'All Blacks Team'. Hooorah! We would also like to acknowledge Kelvin Mephan, our rugby guru for his support and words of wisdom on how to play the game by the rules. Last but not least, Sonny and I would like to thank our wonderful parents for investing your time and money in our boys. They have such great potential to do well in life and become great super rugby players in the future.

We wish our under 8 open team, parents, family and friends all the best in the future and wish you a merry Christmas and a Happy new year! Hope to see you all next season!

The Under 8s started the season off with a hiss and a roar, with plenty of boys turning up to the first set of trainings. As with a lot of the Junior teams though, our numbers were very inconsistent and unfortunately most weeks we had WAY less than the desired 10 boys show up! Luckily several of the teams we played were quite happy to loan us a player or three on match day and the boys were able to play every week. It was very cool to see the huge improvement of many of the boys who played last year and to see how far they’ve come in their rugby. Even though most weeks our boys were the smaller team playing, every week these boys went out there and played with so much heart it was a real pleasure to be a part of it.

Thanks to Mike Ngan-Woo and his coaching staff for taking the trainings each week and also to

Ofa, who unfortunately was only able to coach us for part of the season. Also a big thank you to

Karl Sangster and John Luamanuvae for running/refereeing the boys most Saturdays – rather you than me boys! Anyway, here’s to 2010 and the majority of our boys coming back to play so we can win a few more games next year !!!

The 2009 season was one with a good mix of high and lows for the U9R Black team. Initially, an

‘on paper’ squad of approx 20 boys was quickly whittled down to a core of 14 which provided a good balance of reserves and game time for all of the boys.

A couple of non-rugby related injuries early in the season saw Claye Ryan (broken arm) and

Lachlan Jeffs (broken ankle) ruled out. Claye returned after 12 weeks out to finish the season with a flourish of trie s and some good tackling while Lachlan’s season was cut short about half way through after a promising start with some solid play as part of the forward pack.

The forwards began the season a little apprehensive but had certainly earned their stripes by the end of it, displaying good ball retention skills, and strong tackling. Primarily led by Hamish Finlay at hooker, the remaining forward pack of Connor Cullen, Jack Turnock, Caimin McNamara,

Lachlan Jeffs and Thomas Campbell improved with each game. The culmination of their efforts came in an impressive win over Pakuranga Lions in the last game of the season through a mix of thorough commitment at the breakdown and in the tackle.

The backs conversely started eager to run and refined their game to include a good balance of both run and pass. Haele Finau provided the speed of the back line and was ably supported by

Ben Staite, Tipi Leiataua, Riley Urlich, Theo McNamara, Theo Tamapeau, Claye Ryan and Sione

Finau. The backs also continued to improve each week particularly in the areas of tackling and support play resulting in a number of well worked ‘team’ tries.

The parents of the boys also deserve a mention for their support to the team, at the games, with the oranges and the jersey cleaning and for their support with running trainings and at the games during the coach and manager’s two week absence.

A special thank you also to Mondo Travel Remuera for generously supplying the Player of the Day trophies for each of the games.

After a couple of heavy losses during the early pre-season friendlies, we assembled a squad that has grown in confidence and performance to hold a regular season record of 10 wins and 2 losses at the time of writing this report.

The two losses suffered by the team where by very narrow margins, and the team has achieved an overall ratio for the regular season of 690 points (138 tries) “for” and 200 points (40 tries) “against”.

Equally important with the performance on the scoreboard was the fact that the boys have really enjoyed their rugby and have played their games in a good, sportsman-like spirit.

Our squad has grown to 19 players during the course of the season, and this has sometimes been tough on the boys as the coaches have tried to juggle coaching, refereeing and ensuring that players are substituted fairly during the games.

Having a squad of 19 players has also meant that we have often been able to ensure a fair contest by loaning several players to the opposition, and the players who have donned our opponents’ jerseys are to be commended on putting in a full effort against their own usual team mates.

The players have done themselves proud again this year both on and off the field, starting with a game at Eden Park against a Northland team, later on, winning all of their 5 games at the

Pompallier and the John Paul ll cup for coming first in their grade.

We have had a better season with the weather this year so the boys got in more game time, this showed in the combinations starting to appear and communicating with one another without assistance. There was a few times when we only had the 10 players and no subs, the boys stuck in there to come away with wins, other times we were short of players and I would like to thank

Bruce Hickman allowing a couple of his players from under 9 Open to step up and help.

The team was invited by a Marist North Harbour under 10 rep side selected from four teams looking for a team to run against to test their own ability, even though it ended up being 15 aside on a full field they were given a good run for their money, a good taste for next year.

A big thank you to our Manager Kristene Milich who has done so much again for this team as she has every year. Fran, thanks for being a great co- coach, the boys have kept us busy on training nights, your help has been invaluable. Milan who has ref ’d again this year, we have had comments from opposition teams on how well he has refereed. Thank you.

To the parents and supporters who turn up every practice night and game day, on behalf of the boys thank you for your help and support. These boys have scored more than 136 tries for over

700 points, and less than 180 against, to go thru another undefeated season making it 3 years in a row you should be proud of yourselves.

They come from four different ethnicities, with players born in at least three different countries.

They were thrown together at short notice from the diverse areas of Greenlane and Ellerslie, to

Mount Wellington and Mangere, and the Under 10 Restricted Blue team proved in 2009 that with a little hard work and co-operation they can overcome all obstacles to be as good as anyone on their day on the rugby field.

Revelling in a no-kick, go-hard, run-from-anywhere style, Blue have put on some highly entertaining performances and been competitive in every match - their only defeats being each by one point, and they have scored some sparkling tries in performances that have won them praise from supporters and opposition alike.

Big thank-yous have to be made to the coaches - Karl Nixon for his early season work in securing an entire squad, and then Henri Zinzley for his continual sacrifices of time and expense to train the boys, encourage them all equally, and willingly transporting many of them to matches. Also, thank you to those parents, especially those in Mangere where in the current times income is certainly tight, who cared enough to bring both their boys, as well as picking up others in the team who would need a ride, for the considerable distance to both training and matches, on their own time and pocket.

It has been most heart-warming through it all to see Blue grow as a unit during 2009 - no better illustrated than by their post game chant, yelled three times -

"Who are we? MARIST!"

Starting the season with less than half a team to mid season having more than enough players and then have it tapered off close to end of season, such is the roller coaster ride of junior rugby. We started off as Under 9s and played some magnificent rugby. Later joined by several overage and heavier players from the under 11s who for some unknown reason couldn ’t play for that team we moved up a grade to under 10s. This was a challenge for us as we struggled against bigger, stronger and more experienced teams but players like Tevita Poese, Viliami Aho and Albert Terepo never backed down. Veterans who have been with me since Under 7s like Kian Sinapati, Kisione Vea, and Kelly Tolefoa showed their experience and leadership on the field at all times. The smaller of our players were at times the best of our players and we didn ’t lose by much or won by much either but played as if it were a world cup final.

Finally a thank you to the coaching/refereeing team from Academy New Zealand Otahuhu sports course, John Terekia, James Tupa and Karlos Togiafofoa who helped out with the team this year.

Lastly thank you to the parents and supporters for a good season and see you all next season!

God Bless.

Three Cheers for our team and supporters, ANA..HE, ANA..HE, ANA..HE HAAAH!!

This year for the under 11r was a hard year, struggling for numbers in the early games and losing 2 games early on in the season, one by a huge margin with some of the under nines helping out in that game we were always going to struggle against a top team. So thanks to the under 9’s for there help on that day. But we battled on for the rest of the season only losing one more game.

We have ended the season with the bare 15 players required to take the field, this made rotation of players very easy. In total we lost only three games but won the balance of our games by a minimum of 20 points each game.

I wish to thank all the patents and supporters who turned up every Saturday regardless of the weather and gave 100% support to all the boys who played and also to the parents who helped out on training nights, with out parental support in these areas it would be difficult to coach.

To all the boys in the team, what a great bunch of boys you are it is a shame some will not be back next year, depending on your schools requirements for rugby of course, but I am looking forward to next year and some new challenges with the under 12 team.

So to all the under 11r team we wish you all good luck and good rugby for the future.

This year was the first year that the boys were playing 15 per side full field so it was understandable that early in the season they found it hard work. It was difficult to field a full team early on and so we found it hard come Saturday and the early games were a struggle. It was really encouraging as the season wore on to see the improvement in the team. We gained a few new players and got some good results. The improvement was evident when we were more competitive against some of the teams we had played earlier on in the season.

Every player had some great moments throughout the season and it was often hard to select a player of the day when everyone had played well. However 3 players stood out all season.

The Forward of the year is Jefferey Tuavuki. Jeffery played Flanker and was outstanding in making tackles and getting turnovers. He made a huge amount of ground every time he ran with the ball and he gave 100 percent till the end of every game.

The Back of the year is Sale Finau. Sale played Fullback and would field any kicks with punishing returns.

He scored the most trys by far with his step and speed. One of the teams most productive scoring moves was “give it to Sale”. Sale was the last line of defence and he saved as many trys as he scored.

The player of the year is Dominic Devine. Dom played 2nd five and was the backline director. Dom loves to tackle and would make one after another all game. He is a strong runner on attack and could break tackles with strength or a step. Dom’s run of 5 consecutive games where he scored a try in each one was testament to being able to get himself into the right place at the right time and determination to make the line.

I would like to thank all those parents and supporters who were involved with the team this year. Our supporters were always positive to both teams and were a credit to the club never showing any unsportsmanship. They helped in fundraising, with training and getting the boys to training and games. I would especially like to thank our Manager Sally Gatting who made sure the parents all knew where the games and trainings were each week and would work hard to ensure we had a full team each as well as providing oranges and player of the day treats . Also Stu Devine as Assistant Coach helped enormously with trainings and game days helped the boys skills with drills and passing on his knowledge of the game. Stu also helped with refereeing and taking the flack from opposition coaches.

Lastly thanks to the junior committee for their tremendous effort in making the season a success for all the teams. The work that goes on behind the scenes is tremendous and the communication and information we get outstanding.

In 2008 we won all our games so began 2009 with a 'hiss and a roar' however, it brought us many challenges. Our biggest challenge is one that we faced in junior rugby for the very first time this year; clubs fielding teams where a great number of children did not meet the weight and age criteria. We faced uneven competitions and it took the fun out of those games. So we urge our club teams and officails to continue to champion for fair play at games and at the union level. We need to work together with the available tools that we have through the rule books to ensure the competition is even and fair. It is important that we remember the enjoyment and learning of the game is paramount for the development and success of rugby. It isn't just about winning.

On a brighter note we became a very tight team and rugby continued to be the winner because many of our boys excelled in the classroom as well as on the field due to the strong bonds we had through a well disciplined team. We learnt to have fun, to control our tempers, we learnt to play for each other, we learnt self-respect and most of all to smile and soldier on when things didn't go our way. For most of us this is our last year playing for St Josephs School but are looking forward to continuing our Marist journey under the Marist Auckland Club in 2010. We are now Marist brothers forever. We congratulate you all for your victories and we salute all the coaches, managers, club officials and most of all our parents for all the hard work, love and support you have shown us.

Thank you and God bless you all.

The 2009 season saw 14 games played by this team, 9 of which we won. A wide range of abilities and temperaments melded well together and we stuck our task well.

David McCready was fantastic as coach/referee.

Stand out players were Timujin Hui and Breyton Chong. Jake Cameron displayed great leadership and commitment for the entire season. He is in fact a model of how young players should approach their training and games if they want themselves and their teams to enjoy full success. Many of these young men, with a lot of hard work, have a bright future in the gameand I look forward to watching them develop in the coming years. Hopefully a number of them will make their mark in St.

Peter's first fifteen in the coming years.

Finally a huge thank you to our parents who supported their sons so well and it possible to put this team together.

Well 2009 has been a great year for this team. I would just like to say what an awesome bunch these boys and our only girl (Cecilia) are. They started off with the first round with an 8 out of 8 win and the second round was just as good although we had our first loss to Carlton which put them at the top of the table for the rest of the round with us second.

Just about everyone in our team scored a try, with our top try scorer being Matai with Moa (our ex league boy coming in a close second). Moa also did well with the boot, kicking many goals. We had 6 players return from the year before, where they had played in the same grade and have really shone through this season. We also had some players come from Tamaki who Marist has merged with this season and then had a few come into out team during the Walter Dixon trials.

This season we had the opportunity to trial for the Walter Dickson Squad where we ended up having 9 boys in the Remuera team and 3 in the Mangere team. Trainings were 3 nights a week and club training 2 nights and then a game on Saturday, yes by the end of it they were exhausted but happy as the Remuera team took the tournament out with a clean sweep of 5 wins beating the

Eden team in a nail biting finish of two lots of extra time and winning on the golden try (scored by

Henry from Sacred Heart).

We had one major injury this season, Joseph, who broke his wrist in the first round of competition to put him out till the very last game of the season (the Final) where he made up for lost time if he could see the ball he was going to pounce on it, unfortunately he didn’t score a try but certainly was there in the thick of it.

And yes we won the Championship for the Under 13 Restricted with controversy the whole way.

Our oppositions through out the whole competition decided that we were over weight and not the right age, well what can I say.

(26)

I would love to say that this person and that person shone but I think the team’s dedication to the game showed Karl and I what awesome ability they all have.

On behalf of the team I would like to thank Karl for his time and dedication to the team. I would also like to thank the parents who helped Karl at training.

Lastly to the team, thanks for a great season you have done me proud, good luck for the future and if any of you make it to the All Blacks I want free tickets.

Signing off for 2009

The Marist Sacred Heart u13 Restricted team had an enjoyable year. This was the second year together for most of the boys and we were joined by four new boys for the 2009 season.

We had some superb wins in the early part of the season with our goal of making the Top 6 for the

Championship round. University, College Rifles, Grammar and Suburbs were all defeated in style while we pushed the likes of Waitemata and Carlton close with some entertaining rugby. The results allowed us to qualify in 6th place for play offs.

The Championship matches saw the team play some of its best rugby of the year and although we didn’t manage to secure a win the team played outstanding rugby against Ponsonby, Carlton and

Pakuranga.

(28)

All the boys have developed their rugby skills this year and this was reflected in the number of boys who were selected for higher honours; Auckland Roller Mills (James Kaufusi, Ben Casey,

Henry Boyhan), Auckland East u45kg (M itchell Butler, Sam Key, Pelimani Fisi’iahi), Remuera

Walter Dickson (James Kaufusi, Ben Casey, Henry Boyhan, Mitchell Butler, Christian Kelleher,

Joshua Diack & Matt Dowd).

Other highlights of the season for the team were James Kaufusi captaining the Remuera Walter

Dickson to win the Auckland competition (with our star wing Henry Boyhan scoring the winning golden point try in the final!) and an outstanding win by our boys to claim the Pompallier 10-aside tournament.

Well done team on an excellent year. Our boys will all be playing school rugby for Sacred Heart next year so the team would like to thank the Marist Club and in particular Eva, Theresa and

Sharon for all their work on the Junior Committee and for making us welcome at the club the past two yea rs. We’re sure you’ll see the boys playing rugby for Marist once they’ve finished their schoolboy playing days!

The team has had an excellent season improving each game and as a result winning our respective competition grade. It has been extremely pleasing to see a number of boys show genuine improvement and development during the course of the year. The foundation for the success this year has been the boys attitude and commitment to training and the consistent pride the boys have displayed on Saturday’s.

On behalf of the Marist St Peter’s Under 13 Restricted side we would like to give special thanks to the terrific support from all parents especially,

Our Manager - Mr. Tamapeau

Mrs Rangi for orgainsing the weekly washing of the jerseys

Mr Howarth and Mr Plummer for their coaching assistance

And finally Mrs Tamapeau for her general organisational help

Last but not least thank you to the Marist rugby club and our delegate Mrs Eva Rasmussen-Brown for all her patience and support.

This years U13 Open team was a combination of U12 and U13 Open weight players from a number of local clubs who assembled under the Marist Club banner. That we got together at all is a credit to Eva, Sharon and Theresa who have all been very supportive from Day one. We played as a non Championship team in a Championship grade so we were up against some very well drilled sides who had played together for a number of years.

Needless to say that we lost more games than we won but there were occasions when the team played some very good rugby. We had a number of players who were in their first season of rugby and the improvement they showed over the season was remarkable. The overall dedication to training was very positive and if the U12 boys come back next year to play in the same grade again we will have the makings of a competitive Championship side - I hope that happens.

I would like to thank the Marist club for the enthusiastic support they have given us throughout the season. Thanks also all the parents and supporters who have helped with training and remained loyal and committed to a team who only delivered sparkling rugby sporadically but when they did it was pretty to watch.

Regards,

Alex Meldrum
