SURANAREE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING 410331 Theory of Structures 1stTerm/2543 INSTRUCTORS: Dr.Tanongsak Bisarnsin and Associates PREREQUISITE: 410211 Mechanics of Material I TEXT: Structural Analysis; 4th Edition (1999) Russell C. Hibbeler DESCRIPTION: The course examines the fundamentals and mechanics in determining the structural loads and member forces, influence lines, and deflections of the structural system. The emphasis is on using the intuitive approach to introduce the concepts of the theory to solve complex determinate, and simple indeterminate structural problems. OBJECTIVES: The students are expected to be able to apply the theory to basic structures involving the strategy in the process of formulation, execution, and the diagrammatic interpretation of the results. They are expected to be proficient in the construction of axial, shear, bending-moment diagrams, and elastic curves of the applicable structures such as beams, frames, and trusses. _______________________________________________________ TERM SCHEDULE: Week Topic 1 Types of Structures and Loading Statically Determinate Structures 2 Two and Three Dimensional Trusses 3 Shear and Moment Diagrams 4 Cables and Arches 5 Beam Influence Lines 6 Panel and Truss Influence Lines Bridges, and Maximum Influence * Midterm Exams 7 Deflections: Elastic Curve & Beam, Integration, Moment Area Conjugate Beam Method 8 Deflections: External Work and Strain Energy Principle of Work, Energy, and Virtual Work Virtual Work: Trusses 9 Deflections: Virtual Work: Beams and Frames Virtual Strain Energy 10 Castigliano’s Theorem: Trussses 11 Castigliano’s Theorem: Beams and Frames Introduction to Indeterminate Structures: Beams 12 Indeterminate Structures: Frames and Trusses GRADING SYSTEM Midterm/ Quizzes/ Assignments Final Exam 40% 60% GRADING GUIDES 90 and above 85-89 80-84 75-79 70-74 65-69 60-64 Below 60 A B+ B C+ C D+ D F CLASS ATTENDANCE: Missing 20% of classes will be disqualified from the course and will receive an automatic grade of F.
