De La Salle University Department of Civil Engineering COURSE SYLLABUS SY 2005-2006 Course Code: STRUCT2 Course Title: Structural Analysis II Credit Units: Three (3) units Prerequisite: STRUCT1 Course Description: Strain Energy; Principle of Work and Energy; Deflections of Trusses, Beams and Frames using Virtual Work Method; Castigliano’s Theorem; Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Structures by the Method of Consistent Deformation or Force Method; Slope Deflection Method; Moment Distribution Method; Influence Lines; Non-Prismatic Members; Computer-aided Structural Analysis General Objectives: 1. To understand how geometric and physical properties of a structure cause internal and external effects in it when subjected to loads. 2. To analyze various types of structures and obtain their internal forces and deflections. 3. To prepare the students in their courses in structural design. Value Aims: 1. To develop an awareness in the students concerning their moral and social responsibility in carrying-out proper and accurate analysis of structures to assure their safe & reliable design. 2. To develop honesty, patience and perseverance in students through the course requirements in the form of problem sets, exercises, exams and recitation. Textbook: Hibbeler, Structural Analysis, 6th Ed. References: 1. Oreta, A.W.C. (2004) Understanding 2D Structural Analysis, DLSU URCO 2. Hsieh, Yuan Yu, Elementary Theory of Structures 3. Wang, Intermediate Structural Analysis 4. Kassimali, Structural Analysis Policies: 1. Grading System: The general average is based on 5% Diagnostic Exam, 65% Average of Quizzes and 30% Final Exam. 2. The following scale will be used to compute the final grade: 4.0 : 94.0 - 100.0 3.5 : 88.0 - 93.9 3.0: 82.0 - 87.9 2.5 : 76.0 - 81.9 2.0 : 70.0 - 75.9 1.5 : 65.0 - 69.9 1.0 : 60.0 - 64.9 0.0 : 59.9 below 3. Problem Sets are exercises given during the computation period in class or practice problems to be done at home. One problem from the problem sets may be given in the Long Quiz. 4. Exemption in Final Exams : Students with an average in the quizzes of 96% and with no grade in any quiz less than 90% need not take the final exam. The final grade will be 4.0. 5. The maximum no. hours of absences allowed is 7.5. 6. No make-up will be given for any missed quiz. A missed quiz is given a grade of 0.
