Home Ecology, The FACS of Living Green
Living with respect for the environment is not a new concept to
Family and Consumer Science professionals. Home Economics
founder, Ellen H. Richards, pioneered the concept a century ago.
This presentation honors Ms. Richards legacy and the environment
by outlining creative methods for incorporating the principles of
green living into the FACS curriculum. Activities presented were
created to encourage students to embrace an eco-firendly lifestyle
and to understand the science and economics that support it
Ramona, a retired FACS teacher believes strongly in curriculum
integration. Students need to understand that every course that they
take has the same ultimate goal and that is to prepare them for life
after graduation. We should take every opportunity to emphasize
reading and writing skills, science concepts, history, cultural
information, and math skills. Students are actively engaged in
application learning strategies from bell to bell.

“At Home with History”
Bringing Social Science to Life in the FACS Classroom
The proud history of America is more than a timeline of wars and
battles, elections and legislation, and momentous events. The real
story of our country is written in the homes and everyday lives of
real people. FACS educators have a unique opportunity to introduce
students to history on a very personal level. This presentation
outlines steps for making history a part of the FACS curriculum
through a family history project, the preparation of recipes with
historical connections, crafts and costumes, and profiles of
fascinating FACS pioneers. You and your students may never look
at history in quite the same way again.

6. Roberta Mou, Marilyn Natke, Nancy Jennings: Library Skills,
Art, English and FACS dovetailed into Folk Tale Project. This is a
strategy that Ellen and Melvil would have embraced.

7. Sally Lebro: Integrate Hospitality, Travel and Tourism into
FACS. This is a great curriculum idea as we sit in a famous
Adirondack tourist town. In the 1800’s Melvil and Annie Dewey
invited Ellen Swallow Richards to Lake Placid because he needed
help training his employees at the Lake Placid Club.
This FACS Curriculum includes-world and US geography...
travelers and their needs... how to plan a trip by air, sea, rail, and
car... travel accommodations--hotels,motels,resorts... travel
concerns... and career opportunities in the field.

9. Mary Friel, Association of Consumer Trends
Consumer Trends and FCS
Consumers used to be easily characterized by age, income and other
demographics, making it straightforward to design and market
products that met relatively few failures. Today's consumer is much
harder to define, requiring a wider view and a willingness to try new
approaches to product and market development.
Association for Consumer Trends (ACT) is a membership
organization striving to connect members to trends, resources and
insights to innovation.
ACT members are experts in their fields with real-life experience in
turning trends into action.
