Others Present:
Call to Order

Meeting called to order at 7:10 when quorum was present.
Outstanding Service Volunteer Recognition

This month’s volunteer recognition to Anne Wicken who served as Shoreline’s Coaching Director for a
number of years and has been doing an exemplary job establishing coaching instruction clinics this
summer for her club and SYSA in general.
Minutes Approval

The minutes from the 6/02/2008 meeting were approved without changes.
Officer and Committee Reports
Bob Sigley, VP Operations



Player Cards. Recommended using player cards for City Tournament. Discretion of VP Operations. Bob
would like to do it if the Commissioners are in favor of it. There is additional cost and administrative
overhead for a couple hundred recreational teams to accomplish this. It is an education step for coaches
and players to work into a process that may be enforced by the state in the future. The position is that
SYSA teams will be better positioned for this change when and if it materializes. Parker Mason asked for
a show of hands and the vast majority were in favor of doing this sooner rather than later.
Team Referee Requirement. Bob sought approval to forego collecting referee names this year for the
benefit of going with less paperwork for Motion to approve Bob’s approval to refrain from collectively
team referee names from the association for this year. The motion was approved.
Spring Soccer Revisited. Bob mentioned that one of the largest opportunities was with Field Marshalls
and how to get consistency and better monitoring and oversight of the fields. Bill Bassett recommended

the safety part as being an opportunity … better field maintenance and review. Parker suggested this is
taken offline for further review for how to improve.
Eric Omen, VP Development (Rec)


They had to cancel the first summer camp and may need to cancel the second camp due to low turnout.
The issue was possibly due to being late in the cycle to market the program. Eric opened discussion
about what types of development opportunities besides simply hosting camps. There was consensus
that we as an SYSA group can improve collaboration to better foster development with internal resources
such as the SYSA and Emerald City coaching pool. Eric lauded the continued pursuit of coaching clinics
and licensing.
Parker Mason mentioned that the Fall Coaching Clinics will be done again this fall.
Jon Matsushita, VP Select


Very good response from SYSA for the E and D clinics. MOD courses are scheduled in Magnolia, Mt
Baker, Hillwood and Shorelake.
Eric Oman suggested that we may want to start our own database of licensed coaches.
Michael Murphy, District 1 Commissioner

District Report. No report as Jack substituted for Mike but was not at this meeting.
Parker Mason, President

Change to Rule 12.8. Parker Mason raised the motion to change the rules to deal with game forfeits.
Any team forfeiting a game without a valid reason as determined by the VP of Competition will be
dropped from the tournament. The revision is that “A forfeit to a conflict with a President’s Cup match
will be considered a valid reason and the forfeited game treated as a tournament loss”.
Bill Bassett, Revenue Committee

Bill discussed status of his group’s investigation into City Tournament Plans. His group identified the City
Tournament as a “property” that SYSA could wrap revenue generation opportunities around. They are
looking at large and small marketing opportunities for this venue. Revenue goal may be in the $10K
range for this year. Bill mentioned that August would be the month to identify specifics of how to
harness the power of SYSA to make this happen for City Tournament.
Old Business

Parker Mason dispensed with the Old Business since the participants were not there (Mail List
Guidelines, Callahan Fund).
New Business


There was a bit of a discussion about SYSA work on fields recently and specifically about the work to
support the Parks Levy.
Entry level Referee clinic in Ballard next week. There was discussion about how many referee clinics
there are and how clinics could be improved. The discussion centered around the need for licensing and
mentoring to be long term successful.
