Within the framework of the cadet wing, it provides a progression of experiences designed to develop each student's leadership potential and to serve as an orientation to active duty. The first two years, the General Military Course (GMC), of LLAB involve activities classified as initial leadership experiences. Initial leadership experiences include the study of Air Force (AF) 1 customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, giving military commands, instructing, correcting and evaluating the preceding skills, studying the environment of the AF officer, and the career opportunities of commissioned officers. The last two years, the Professional Officer Course (POC), consist of activities classified as advanced leadership experiences. They involve planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling the military activities of the cadet wing, the preparation and presentation of briefings and other oral and written communication, and providing of interviews, guidance, and information which will increase the understanding, motivation, and performance of other cadets. The specific course objectives for each AS class are listed in Attachment 1. Fall term objective training dates are listed in Attachment 2. SECTION C – COURSE POLICY AND PROCEDURES PREPARATION FOR LLAB You are responsible for knowing the LLAB schedule, location, reading assignments, and directed uniform. This can be determined from the weekly LLAB Operations Order (Ops Order). The Ops Order as well as Special Orders, AFOQT test dates, announcements, changes to this syllabus, etc., can be found on the Det web site: http://www.kent.edu/afrotc/ and cadet bulletin board. UNIFORM WEAR You will wear the directed uniform of the day, as directed by the Ops Order, from 0800-2000 on the day of your scheduled LLAB class and also to your AFROTC academic classes. If your work, class or personal circumstances restrict your wear of the uniform to LLAB, you will submit a memo for record prior to LLAB stating your circumstances to the Cadet Inspector General for approval. CLASSROOM CONDUCT/PARTICIPATION The classes will be student led and centered. Soft drinks are allowed in class, but food, smoking and chewing tobacco are not permitted in class. Turn off phones and pagers prior to the start of LLAB. If you have a bona fide reason to have either on during LLAB, you must coordinate it with the IG prior to the start of class. Participation in the class is the key to meeting LLAB objectives. This is the time in which you are learning management and leadership skills required of officers in the Air Force. Your participation gives you the opportunity to use and develop these skills. If you forego the participation and thus the experiences, you will be at a disadvantage on active duty. This is the time to learn and experience situations, not on active duty when your career can be affected. 2 Non-participation in class (not attending) by cadets will be considered as "Indifference to Training" and treated accordingly. Non-attendance and late to class will reflect in your class participation grade. Non-participation in the mandatory AFROTC Physical Training (PT) program is also considered as "Indifference to Training." This will require the cadet to be placed on Special Student status and will not allow for enrollment in LLAB for the semester. In order to be a good officer and leader, you must be accountable for your actions. For each time you are late to LLAB, your AS class, or a cadre appointment, fail to show for class/appointment, or miss a suspense, regardless of the reason, you will write an official memo explaining the circumstances. This memo will be turned in to IG within 72 hours. If the reason is unexcused, you may be given a Form 16 counseling by the COC or other cadre member. Accumulation of Form 16’s for substandard performance may result in Conditional Events an may be grounds for suspension of scholarships and/or potential dismissal from the AFROTC program. Consult the wing calendar for a complete list of class meeting dates, assignments and exams. Lesson objectives and goals for each class meeting will appear in the weekly Ops Order. Email is the primary means of communication used within Air Force ROTC and the cadet wing. You will need to check you email on a regular basis; at least two times/week (doing a quick email check once a day is optimum). In conjunction with university initiatives, your university email address will be used for all AFROTC communication. If you wish to forward your email to your own personal email account hosted by another server, contact the computer help desk. Cadets are responsible to ensure current email address, phone number and other contact information is both current and available to cadre and cadet leadership. ACCOUNTABILITY STANDARDS The following circumstances will require a written Memorandum for Record to be submitted to the Cadet IG within 72 hours. - Late or missing any portion of Leadership Lab - Attending less than 2 PT sessions per week (Kent or Akron) - Not wearing the proper uniform of the day/week - Not attending other mandatory events UNIVERSITY AND AFROTC PLAGIARISM POLICY Fabricating is faking quotations, faking “facts,” reporting events that did not happen, etc. It is not only reprehensible it could be actionable in court. Plagiarizing, as defined by Webster, is “to steal and pass off as one’s own the idea or words of another.” It is unethical and, in cases involving creative work, usually illegal. Do not plagiarize the work of another. You need to place any information you use verbatim in quotes. Ensure you properly cite your sources when presenting information in briefings and papers. Committing of any of these offenses while in school is grounds for disciplinary action. If the complaint is upheld, a variety of punishments 3 may be imposed: a reprimand, a lowered or failing grade in the course, or dismissal from the University and/or AFROTC program. SECTION D - GRADING STANDARDS Your LLAB grade will not affect your AS academic classroom grade. The following will determine your final grade: Course Grades Pass (Sat) – meet all the requirements listed below Fail (Unsat) – fail to meet all the requirements listed below REQUIREMENTS Attendance: - Attend a minimum of 80% of all scheduled LLAB sessions. - Attend a minimum of 2 PT Sessions per week (Kent/Akron) - FOR CROSSTOWN CADETS other than Akron: submit alternate PT request to COC detailing 2 hours of physical fitness training per week. IMPORTANT: There are three MANDATORY LLABs that may only be excused in advance by the COC in writing. These are the Low Ropes Course, Combat Water Survival Training and Combat Dining In. These MANDATORY events will count toward your 80% requirement; however, any non attendance without advanced excusal will result in an automatic failure of LLAB. PFA: - Attempt the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) after participation in eight PT sessions. A minimum of two PFA evaluation opportunities will be conducted this semester (Primary and Failure/Make-up). (Contract cadets must pass the PFA. Failure of a PFA by a contract cadet may constitute administrative action.) Attitude Toward Training: - All cadets must show a positive attitude toward military training. This requirement is considered met unless an indifference to military training has been documented between the cadet and cadre on an AF Form 16. Additionally, a failing grade in LLAB is considered evidence of Indifference to Training and is sufficient cause for non-continuation in AFROTC.
