Document Bibliography: Your documents/files verify how your program meets certification requirements. [NOTE: Creating this “Document Bibliography” is usually done as the last step in the application process.] The “Documentation” you provide show that your program has met at least the minimum requirements for each level of certification requested, & should include all of the following components: 1) a brief statement of how your program accomplishes that criteria requirement; 2) a brief description of how your program tracks/documents how the minimum requirement is ”Met”; 3) enough examples/samples to enable CRLA Reviewers to verify the excellence of your program; 4) a clear, descriptive title for each of your attached documents/files, with page number(s) specified; &, 5) the complete listing of each document/file referenced in this application. (APA format not required.) Naming Examples (APA format not required.): “Level 1: Learning Styles Presentation.ppt, #2-8 ”, or, “End of Semester Tutor Evaluation by Supervisor.doc, pp. 1-3”. This enables the reviewers to identify the purpose & reason for each attached document. Brevity is appreciated. Using condensed, but complete documentation expedites a program’s certification. Some examples of usual documentation items include: a. course syllabi, b. workshop overview, or program description, c. time logs, d) tutor training guides, d. titles & ISBN numbers of copyrighted books, videos, DVDs, surveys, or, other training materials, e. working address links for Web pages or Websites, f. brochures/flyers/posters/memo samples, g. worksheet samples, or, h. handout samples. Be aware of copyright concerns in your documentation. COPYRIGHT REMINDER: “Compliance with federal copyright law is expected of all CRLA ITPC programs. Are there any projected changes in your tutor training program in the upcoming academic year? If so, please describe the planned changes, and clearly reference any pertinent documentation you are including to verify your continued adherence to the requirement guidelines for each level you are requesting continued certification. Be sure to list any added documents within Section “6. Document Bibliography” [A]We have adopted a new textbook - Lipsky, Sally (2011) A training guide for college tutors and peer educators. As of Fall 2011, the level II training will include Chapter 7 Valuing Diversity among Student. To be added to our Level II diversity training in the Fall 2011 – therefore, we don’t have any student examples to submit yet. Students will be asked to go to this website, take the IAT, and respond to these questions as a springboard to our workshop discussion. Racism and bias – How it may affect Intercultural communication 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What were your IAT results? Do you believe your results were accurate? Why or why not? What was your reaction when you learned your results? Regardless of the IAT, do you think that you have hidden racial biases? What is your evidence? In your opinion, how common are hidden racial biases, and how important are they compared with other racial biases? [B] http://www.understandingprejudice.org/iat/ The students will also be encouraged to explore the contents of this next link and bring their thoughts to the workshop discussion. How many hours did you tutor this week? In what context (e.g., Fallon's class, regular TLC hours, etc.)? 2. What was the nature of the tutoring (e.g., Research Methods Paper, stats assignment, etc.)? 3. How many total hours of tutoring have you now logged? 4. What was the most important incident regarding tutoring you experienced this week? Why was this incident important to you? What did you learn from it? (Even if you did not have any face-to-face tutoring this week, you can comment on something you observed Math tutors doing in TLC or something you learned from an assignment or video module.) 8. Please indicate any and all concerns/issues, pros and cons, that arose in the administration of certification requirements for the level(s) you are currently certified for. The only issue that came up was the movement of “topics” within the levels. However, because we had so much material jammed into Level I, when some topics moved to Level II it was actually helpful. New concerns – how to adequately supervise “off-site” tutoring (from a training perspective) We have a number of departmental tutoring initiatives springing up around campus, yet not enough funds to provide timely observations and feedback on best practices should these areas decide to have their tutors participate in CRLA tutor training (many have shown an interest). 9. How has the certification process benefited you, your tutors, your program, and/or, your institution? Also, let us know if you would be willing to allow us post your comments (named or anonymously) to use as a valuable resource toward documenting and improving the quality and components of CRLA’s ITPC. Thank you, The ITPC Team. It seems as if faculty confidence in the center has increased since tutor certification began. Since the initiation of CRLA training, the Math dept has restructured an experiential component of the Secondary Math Ed program to require a course that requires completing Level I certification and tutoring in the Learning Center. They have also created 2 other courses that are electives that require Level II certification and either tutoring in the local school system or tutoring in the Learning Center. The courses are very popular and the students report that their experiences better prepare them for student teaching and passing the Praxis II. In addition, the Psychology dept has enlisted our cooperation in developing a course that trains tutors who then provide support for students struggling in Research Methods and Social Statistics courses. Level I certification is required, but the psych tutor often have to continue into a 2nd semester to gather enough tutoring hours to reach certification. Many of them choose to volunteer for continuing semesters to participate in Level II certification. Page 4 2nd Stage: Reflection & Renewal Application Packet Rev. 3/6/2010 Recently we have begun collaborating with a community outreach program, Community Central. Their intention is to provide tutoring assistance New Britain High School Students from a storefront location downtown. We are in the early stages, but the coordinators of the program are looking to us as the “experts” and intend to follow a training protocol for the tutors that will meet CRLA standards. Funding, as always, will determine our next steps as an “off-site” location will require supervision that can’t be provided by the TLC staff. 10. Submit the names, levels, and certification dates of your tutors who have already earned certificates, or, that you anticipate will earn their certificate before the expiration of the current certificate you are renewing.
