(Dover, NH – June 14, 2010) – Making the most of its location on the
Cochecho River, the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is hosting a River
Celebration on Thursday, July 1 from 10 am – 3 pm . This unique family event is presented in partnership with the non-profit Gundalow Company , and will include activities inside the museum as well as aboard the Captain Edward
H. Adams gundalow docked outside on the river in Henry Law Park.
Families will learn more about New Hampshire's amazing rivers and the important role the flat-bottom gundalow boats played in transporting materials and goods on the state's river highways. Special activities and demonstrations
inside the Children’s Museum include exploring how rivers form and flow using the museum’s local rivers model, learning about animals who make their homes along the river through hands-on projects. Children can also design a simple boat & test how much cargo they can haul.
Just outside the museum in Henry Law Park, the Captain Edward H. Adams gundalow will be anchored on the Cochecho River for dockside, interactive tours and hands-on activities such as setting the sail, using old tools, and making half-hull gundalow models.
All River Celebration activities are included in the regular price of Children’s
Museum admission: $8 for adults and children, $7 for seniors age 65+, and free for children under one year old.
More information about the River Celebration can be found at www.childrensmuseum.org
About the Gundalow
The Captain Edward H. Adams , a replica of the flat-bottomed sailing barges that carried cargo on our tidal rivers for 250 years, provides unique educational experiences filled with hands-on activities to engage students and enhance social studies, science, math, and visual and language arts .
Gundalow educators present dockside programs for schools and groups, and students are active learners as they recreate history, set the sail, haul lines, analyze water quality, use traditional tools, tow for plankton, and more. Programs correlate with
Maine Learning Results and New Hampshire Curriculum Frameworks.
