From the Desk of: Mrs. Reinhardt Last month we touched on Common Core standards in math. I want to also share some of the Common Core standards for Language Arts/Reading. All of these and more can be found at www.d15.org under the curriculum tab. The grades K–8 standards on the following pages define what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade. They correspond to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) anchor standards below by number. The CCR and grade-specific standards are necessary complements—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity—that together define the skills and understandings that all students must demonstrate. Key Ideas and Details 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. 2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. 3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. Craft and Structure 4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. 5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. 6. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. If you have any questions about Common Core Standards please call the office or ask your child’s teacher. We are happy to share what have learned and how we utilize these standards in our teaching each day. MARCH 3 – KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION at Edgebrook 4-7pm. Please stop by the cafeteria to receive/complete the registration paperwork for incoming Kindergarten students for the 2016-2017 school year. The nurse, secretaries and principal will be there to answer all of your registration questions! We are a Character Counts School…. February: Citizenship Teacher Requests: I have received some questions about teacher requests for the 2016-2017 school year. Our teachers spend many hours making class lists. They know the students well and always place students with the teacher they feel would be the best fit for them. I am asking that you please respect the teacher’s efforts in placement and do NOT make teacher requests. Even siblings can have very different learning styles. A teacher that you loved for one child may not be the best fit for another. St. Baldrick’s Help us raise money for local families who are fighting childhood cancer. When sending in a birthday treat for the class that you consider sending a healthy snack, stickers, pencils or even a book to be donated to the class on your child’s behalf. Snack options include fruit, veggies, pretzels, or goldfish crackers. Remember all treats must be store bought. These will give the students more brain power for the remainder of the day.
