Anesthesiology:
Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship
FAER created the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship to encourage talented medical
students to consider careers in anesthesiology research and perioperative medicine. The MSARF program
offers medical students an 8-week anesthesia-related research experience and the opportunity to present
research findings at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting.

Basic Sciences:
HHMI Summer Medical Fellows Program
Purpose: Supports up to 20 students working in HHMI laboratories (with HHMI investigators or at the
Janelia Farm Research Campus), for a minimum of 8 weeks (10 weeks preferred).
Funds: A stipend of $5,000 for 10 weeks ($500/week for less than 10 weeks) and up to $1,000 for
roundtrip relocation costs.

Baystate Medical Center Summer Student Scholar Program
The Baystate Medical Center, the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine, and UMass
Amherst is offering a mentored research program for medical students. This 10-week program allows you
to participate in a research project from start to finish and present project outcomes to the scientific
community. In addition to the research experience, you participate in lectures on the basics of research
and seminars. This program runs from the end of May to the first of August with a stipend of $3,500.
Eligible Applicants: Students between their first and second year.

Cardiovascular:
Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease
(Sponsored by Multiple AHA/ASA Scientific Councils)
Up to 20 scholarships worth $2000 will be available for students researching cardiovascular
disease topics within basic, clinica, or population sciences.
Student Scholarships in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke
(Sponsored by the Stroke Council)
Up to five $2000 scholarships will be available for students specifically researching
cerebrovascular disease and stroke. Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to
receive a travel grant to attend the AHA’s International Stroke Conference 2012.

Diabetes:
Diabetes Research Center's Medical Student Research Program
Purpose: The goal of the Program is to encourage medical students to consider research in
diabetes and its complications as a career and to educate students about diabetes.
Vanderbilt Student Research Training Program in Diabetes and Endocrinology
The Vanderbilt Diabetes Center is offering a research opportunity for students to conduct research under
the direction of a Vanderbilt scientist during the summer. Students may conduct research from a broad
range of diabetes- and obesity-related areas of study. In addition to an individual research project, each
student attends a series of seminars addressing various clinical and research aspects of diabetes mellitus
and its complications. Each student will receive a stipend.
Eligible Applicants: Any first year or second year student.

Ethics:
Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics
The FASPE fellowship is a fully funded program for students designed to address contemporary ethical
issues through a unique historical context. Sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the two-week
fellowship (June 17, 2012-June 29, 2012) initially focuses on the role of the medical profession in Nazi
Germany and the Holocaust and uses this as a framework for contemporary ethical issues. Following an
introduction in New York, the fellows travel to Berlin, Krakow and Oswiecim (Auschwitz)where students
will work with the faculty to explore both the history and the ethical issues facing their profession today.
All program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food, are covered. The 2012
program will be led by Drs. Mark Mercurio and John Hughes, both from the Yale School of Medicine.
The tentative program dates for FASPE Medical are June 17 – June 29, 2012.

Israel Medical Ethics Summer Fellowship
The New England Institute of Jewish Studies is sponsoring a four week summer program, combining the
study of medical ethics, Jewish thought and tours of Israel. The purpose of the program is to enable
Jewish medical students to explore Jewish approaches to challenging medical issues confronting health
care professionals. This year’s program will take place June 26 – July 26, 2012. Scholarships available.

Family Medicine:
Delaware Academy Family Physicians Summer Fellowship
The David and Ethel Platt fellowship is sponsored by the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians
Research and Education Foundation to students interested in family medicine. Four fellowships of $1,200
for a four-week preceptor program where the chosen student will spend each week with a different family
doctor in Delaware.

HIV:
David E. Rogers Fellowship Program
Purpose: For first-year medical and dental students for support of projects to be executed during
the summer between the first and second years of medical or dental school. Half of
the fellowships
are awarded to projects focused on HIV prevention or care.

Infectious Disease:
IDSA Education and Research Foundation
An important part of IDSA's mission is to promote the subspecialty of infectious diseases by attracting the
best and brightest medical students to the field. To further this goal, the IDSA Education and Research
Foundation offers summer scholarships to medical students with mentorship by an IDSA member or
fellow. Students in any year of medical school are eligible for this award. The scholarship activity must
focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities. Each
scholarship recipient will receive $2,000. The majority of the funding will be provided in July at the
beginning of the scholarship activity.

Paulette and Denzel Washington Family Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award
The primary purpose of the award is to encourage physicians to enter the field of neurological research.
The recipients will be chosen on the basis of their qualifications and interest in research, prior scientific
work, letters of reference and the Selection Committee's overall evaluation. Each year that this award is
presented, one graduate or medical student will receive a $2,500 monthly stipend for a three-month period
of time that they conduct research in a laboratory directed by Dr. Keith Black at Cedars-Sinai, Dept of
Neurosurgery.
Eligible Applicants: Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Summer Clinical Fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis
Sponsored by the Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society, the Medical Student Fellowship in
MS program offers the opportunity to expose medical students in their pre-clinical and clinical years to
the field of multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society will award stipends to pre-clinical medical
students or research funding (elective credit) to clinical students. Students are expected to identify a
mentor (i.e. neurologist) to discuss interests and opportunities. A list of mentors and a description of
available experiences is available through the NMSS. The fellowship is located in St. Louis, MO.

The American Brain Tumor Association Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program
The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) is a 10-to-12 week laboratory experience designed to
attract and motivate young, talented medical students to pursue a career in brain tumor research. Medical
Student Summer Fellows spend their summer in a neuro-oncology laboratory, learning basic science
research skills from experienced mentors. Each Summer Fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend, and is
required to submit a report on their experience. Based on these reports, an “outstanding medical student”
is selected to receive the annual ABTA Lucien Rubenstein Award. The recipient of the award will receive
a $1,000 bonus.

Nephrology:
ASN Student Scholar Grant
The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) helps support medical students interested in basic or clinical
nephrology research. An award period can be a summer, semester, academic year, or any other 10-52
week period of continuous full-time research. Applicant must be completing research in a nephrology or
renal lab. Students will receive a stipend of $400/week and are not eligible to receive any other sources of
funding.

Neurosurgery:
AANS Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) through the Neurosurgery
Research and Education Foundation is offering the AANS Medical Student Summer Research
Fellowship (MSSRF) program.
New in 2012, twenty (20) Medical Student Summer Research Fellowships will now be awarded in the
amount of $2,500 per award.
CNS/CSNS Medical Student Socioeconomic Fellowship
Purpose: The CNS/CSNS Medical Student Socioeconomic Fellowship supports a medical
conducting research on a socioeconomic issue impacting neurosurgical practice.

The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins will once again sponsor
a summer fellowship for medical students
Funds: $5,000.00 stipend, free housing and a free gym membership for the summer
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: Summer Fellowship
Purpose: The objective of this eight-week program is the educational enrichment of medical
students by offering experience in research and clinical oncology. Hopefully, such
experience will enhance the student’s knowledge about cancer and thereby promote future
interest in the field.
Betty Lea Stone American Cancer Society Research Fellowships
This fellowship offers first-year medical student the opportunity to participate in a laboratory research
with accomplished investigators and receive a stipend of $5,000. Fellows will assist with ongoing
research during the ten-week, summer program. Students must find a faculty sponsor who will work with
him or her to write a proposal for a summer research project.
Eligible Applicants: first-year student enrolled in a New England medical school.

Opthamology:
Fight for Sight - Summer Fellowship
Purpose: Provide medical students exposure to leading vision laboratories under the
sponsorship of outstanding mentors. Eligibility: Medical students Funds: $2,100 stipend

Orthopaedic:
Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship
The fellowship program is built around a summer research project that is directed by an
orthopaedic surgeon or scientist at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Both clinical and basic
science projects are offered, and these are detailed below.
The fellowship program includes the opportunity for weekly observation of orthopaedic surgical
procedures with a variety of clinical faculty. In addition, a weekly seminar series and discussion group
provides the opportunity for students to expand their understanding
of the fundamentals of medical
research and clinical orthopaedics.
The 8-week program runs from June 20–August 12, 2011, and includes a $2,400 stipend. Up to fifteen
(15) fellowship awards will be granted.

Pediatrics:
American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research Student Research Program
If you are interested in pediatrics, the APS & SPR are offering a research opportunity for individuals
outside of their own medical school. Students chosen will work 8-10 weeks for 40 hours/week with a
maximum stipend of $60 per day in a research laboratory. Student responsible for finding living

Peds Neuro:
Swaiman Medical Scholarship Program
The Child Neurology Foundation announces the availability of up to ten (10) summer
clinical
research scholarships for first- and second-year U.S. and Canadian medical students
who have an
interest in child neurology.
Awards will be made for clinical research in child neurology, to be conducted under the direction of a
child neurologist during the summer break. Selected applicants receive a $3500 scholarship for their
summer project.
Psychiatry:
Betty Ford Summer Institute for Medical Students Purpose:
The Summer Institute for Medical Students is a unique learning experience for medical
students to gain understanding and insight into addictive disease and the recovery process.
Deadline: December 2, 2011 with the fellowship to begin the following August
Scaife Advanced Medical Student Assistantship in Alcohol & Other Drug Dependencies
Purpose: Through the generous funding of the Scaife Family Foundation, the Institute for
Research, Education and Training in Addictions is able to conduct this specialized program.
The program offers students training in the field of Addiction Services incomparable to any
they may have encountered in their prior medical school education or residency experience.
Funds: Participants will receive a $150 per week stipend and a $200 transportation allowance for a
total of $650 for the three weeks. Rooms and meals are also provided.
Jeanne Spurlock Research Fellowship in Substance Abuse and Addiction for Minority Medical Students
Sponsored by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) this is an
opportunity for minority medical students to explore a research career in substance abuse in relation to
child and adolescent psychiatry. Students will gain valuable work experience and work with a fellowship
mentor. The fellowship will award $3,500 for 12 weeks of research and are required to submit a proposal
to the AACAP annual meeting. Participants are required to attend the AACAP Annual Meeting in San
Francisco, CA on October 23 – October 28, 2012 to present their research in a new research poster
session.
Eligible Applicants: African-American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Mexican American,
Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander students who are US citizens and enrolled in medical school.

Summer Medical Student Fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Public Health:
Arnold P. Gold Foundation Summer Fellowship
Student Summer Fellowship grants are awarded for research and/or service in community health and
cultural competency issues. The goal of this foundation is to providence students with the opportunity to
work with directly with patients. This provides up to $3,000 for a ten-week project in which a student
works directly with a mentor. A final report is due at the end of the ten-weeks, although the project should
have the potential to be on-going. Medical students may apply for either the Research Fellowship or the
Service Fellowship program.

Global Health Fellows Program in Geneva - Duke Sanford
Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy is offering a Global Health Fellowship in Geneva
designed to equip students in fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other health challenges. This
program will secure an 8-12 week summer internship in Geneva with WHO, UNAIDS and other NGOs
dealing with global health issues. Students are also required to take the Health Policy in a Globalizing
World course. The Program fee is $2500 which does not include housing, food or airfare.

Harvard Global Health Effectiveness Program
This program will train public health leaders, students and physicians through a curriculum of
epidemiology, management science and global health delivery case teaching, enabling them to effectively
design and manage programs that improve health outcomes for the populations they serve. The program
in Boston, MA will consist of two credit-granting courses and one seminar taught by senior Harvard
faculty.
Eligible Applicants: Should demonstrate commitment to global health and experience in global health
organizations, with a background in healthcare or a related field. Tuition and fees for the courses will total
approximately $4,400.

Rheumatology:
ACR REF/Abbott Medical Student Research Preceptorship
Purpose: This award introduces students to the specialty of rheumatology by supporting a
full-time mentored research experience. This is a one-year award. Students will complete an
eight-week program. $3000 per eight week session and receive complimentary registration
and reimbursement for up to $1500 in travel expenses to attend the ACR/ARHP Annual
Scientific Meeting.

International Opportunities:
Benjamin H. Kean Traveling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine
The ASTMH will provide travel expenses for medical students who arrange clinical tropical medicine or
tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases. Round-trip airfare and up to
$1000 living expenses will be provided. Applicants must propose a new elective in tropical medicine
research or clinical tropical medicine training, which will include at least one month at a site endemic for
tropical communicable diseases other than HIV/AIDS. The student must not have done previous
electives/rotations in the same country.

Children Without Borders
Medical students are invited to spend their summer or time off in Costa Rica. This is a non-profit
organization that provides life saving medical care to children and health education for families in
underserved countries available through their student intern program. Students will be able to offer caregiving and educational activities while working alongside experienced physicians.

CIEE Teaching Abroad
Interested in teaching in Chile, China, Spain or Thailand for a year? This program allows students to live
and work overseas while learning and interacting with the local people, culture and language. CIEE
negotiates a placement teaching English, offers a local stipend and temporary housing.

Shoulder to Shoulder Volunteer in rural Western Honduras
Shoulder to Shoulder has been working in the Intibucá Honduras for more than 20 years working with
communities to reduce poverty through programs in health, education, nutrition and environmental
hygiene. Shoulder to Shoulder is a long-standing partnership between communities in Western Honduras
and multiple Departments of Family Medicine and other institutions in the US. Several Brown medical
students, undergrads, residents, and faculty have taken part.

Unite For Sight's High Impact Volunteer Abroad Opportunities
Volunteer abroad in all, winter, spring or summer quarters in Ghana, Honduras or India. Assist eye
doctors in rural villages, refugee camps and slums to provide eye care for patients living in extreme
poverty. Volunteers encouraged to be proactive in developing their own projects and programs that
coincide with Unite For Sight's outreach program.
