Skill: Describe how lifestyle, pathogens, family history, and other risk factors are related to the cause or prevention of disease and other health problems. Time: 5 minutes Introduction and Overview Today we continue the unit on physical activity. In this lesson we focus on weight management. First we will introduce ourselves as the teachers for today’s class. Next we will set the ground rules for today’s class. We will then introduce the topic of weight management. We will introduce this by asking for the students’ responses for this situation: Two teens are the same height and are both healthy, but their weight differs by more than ten pounds. What might account for this difference? We will listen to answers and try to develop a short discussion about the situation within the class. Transition to next activity Next we will pass out a handout (Applying Health Skills, p43). Time: 5 minutes Content Objectives: SWBAT understand the terms on their own by researching the information provided in the book Instructional Activity Arrangement of Students: in regular assigned seating Method: Lecture/Questioning/Worksheet activity Materials: handout (Applying Health Skills, p43) Procedure: We will explain the worksheet to the students. They will attempt to fill out the worksheet individually at best that they can. They may use their book if they would like. We will walk around the class to be sure that the students stay on-task. After 5 minutes we will continue with the lecture allowing the students to fill in the worksheet as the lecture continues. Transition to next activity Next will present overheads on the overhead projector for lecture (5 vocabulary words). Time: 7 minutes Content Objectives: SWBAT understand the vocabulary terms by listening to the lecture presented by the teachers. SWBAT answer questions and participate when the teachers ask questions during the lecture. Instructional Activity Arrangement of Students: in regular assigned seating Method: Lecture/Questioning Materials: Overheads Procedure: We will present the 5 vocabulary words of the lesson. We will talk about each vocabulary word and ask the students questions related to the vocabulary words. Discussion by the students will be encouraged Transition to next activity After talking about the dangers of eating disorders we will now lecture about proper tips for weight management. Next will present overheads on the overhead projector for lecture (tips for weight management). Time: 7 minutes Content Objectives: SWBAT understand the tips for weight management of how to safely gain and lose weight. SWBAT answer questions and participate when the teachers ask questions during the lecture. Instructional Activity Arrangement of Students: in regular assigned seating Method: Lecture/Questioning Materials: Overheads Procedure: We will present the tips to lose weight and present the tips in order to gain weight. We will ask the students questions about how to gain weight and how to lose weight properly. Discussion will be encouraged. Transition to next activity Now we will group the students into groups of 3 students. We will give each group a piece of paper containing a scenario dealing with helping a friend with an eating disorder. Time: 16 minutes (8 minutes preparation, 8 minutes presentation of role plays) Content Objectives: SWBAT cooperate with other students in order to complete a role-play. SWBAT stay on-task and complete an appropriate role-play. Instructional Activity Arrangement of Students: students are grouped into groups of 3 Method: Role Play Materials: Role Play scenario paper Procedure: We will first give each group a paper containing an eating disorder scenario. The students will first brainstorm on how to present their role-play. The students should go through the six steps of the decision making process in order to develop their role-play. Transition to next activity Next we will review the lesson for today by going over a handout (Reteaching, p23) Time: 5 minutes Content Objectives: SWBAT answer questions and participate when the teachers ask questions during the lecture. SWBAT fill out the worksheet from their knowledge that they have learned during class.
