Institutional Research FAUG (Functional Area User Group) 2005-2007 Chair: Jackie Andrews, SUNY New Paltz Alternate: Julie Rao, Monroe Community College Notes from IR FAUG meeting held in Syracuse on January 12, 2007 Present: Nancy Shearer Tammy Wellington Jerrett LeMay Jill Heneghan Cathy Gentile Lillian Zhu Michelle Bonn Judy Singh Marty Wisniewski Merle Canfield Richard Nabinger Barbara Lawrence Susan Duncan Maryanne Kinsella Carol Marriott Annette Zuber Alfred State Alfred State Binghamton Binghamton Binghamton Brockport Buff State Canton Cayuga Cortland Delhi Downstate Medical Dutchess Dutchess Genesee Genesee David Seguin Mark Radlowski Angel Andrea Marian Whitney Susan Bello Althea Oenga Jackie Andrews Christine Work Betsy Gray Peter Hoyt Bev Baker Nate Trost Jennifer Martin Tse Jennifer Abbott Bobbi Larrabee Jamestown Mohawk Valley Monroe Morrisville State Nassau New Paltz New Paltz Orange Orange Potsdam SICAS Center SICAS Center Upstate Medical Upstate Medical Upstate Medical Purpose: Build relationships Inform members Member preferences Outcomes: Knowledge of FDRs Start of new FDR, if appropriate Awareness of needs of implementing campuses Awareness of what we are all doing The campuses present fit into three categories: long-term, recent and new. Long-term (last century) Alfred Canton Delhi Genesee Mohawk Valley Morrisville Potsdam Recent (this century) Brockport Jamestown Monroe Upstate Medical New (implementing now) Dutchess New Paltz Cayuga Suffolk Orange Nassau Buff State Binghamton Downstate Medical FDRs Little movement on any of the IR FDRs because of the work on the System IR redesign. Not much will happen until that work is done. Group indicated a continued interest in having SICAS work on the SED reports, as well as the Common Data Set. As preparation for working on the CDS (not course data submission, but the common dataset), send Jackie (andrewsj@newpaltz.edu) the SQL select statements you, or your programmer, have written to draw the data for the CDS. Jackie will pass them along in bulk to Nate, and then pass this role over to the next IR FAUG chair. Nate will benefit from knowing the variables, the definitions and the select statements as much as possible. SICAS Center The SICAS Center has hired three people in the new role of Solution Specialist. They are functional (as opposed to technical) people and will assist especially the implementing campuses. They are Shirley Clark (Financial Aid), Francine Grappa (HR/Finance) and Bill Grau (Student). The SICAS Center continues to hire programmers. The SICAS Center will plan a meeting with implementing campuses sometime this spring. Reporting Environment Some campuses will buy/have bought the Operational Data Store (ODS) and/or the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Some have bought the ODS only. Some will buy neither. Some have developed their own data warehouse and will not buy the Banner products. We have to support all flavors of reporting environments. Please let Jackie know what flavor you are, so that consciousness can be shared. The ODS is a single snapshot of a table/tables at some interval. It will not include SICAS tables. This snapshot consists of flattened data, similar to the object access views that Banner has had for a long time. The EDW builds on the ODS, but consists of multiple snapshots. Dynamic Environment (I think this is a fair statement) After a period of relative stability re Institutional Research, we are speeding toward a period of great dynamism. Some of us will have ODS/EDW and some will not. We will use a variety of reporting tools. Some of our systems will rely heavily on the web and some will not. We will need to communicate very well to continue to help each other out. Next Meeting Our next planned meeting will be at the June AIRPO June 14 -15 at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. Send topics and questions to Jackie. The implementing campuses will have a conference call every other month starting in February (February, April, a session at the meeting in June, August, October, November, meeting in January) until the campuses are implemented. Anyone who would like to join that conference call should let Jackie know. If the FAUG wants to meet either virtually or in 3D between now and June, let Jackie know. The SunGard Summit is in March, so let Jackie know if you are going. FAUG Chair Elections are held in the fall. Jackie will not run for the post again, so please think about it. Have a GREAT spring semester!
