UNIVERSAL REFERRAL CHECKLIST - NAUI
Congratulations on completing the classroom and pool training portion of your NAUI Scuba
Diver course at Huron Scuba. This handout discusses the process for Universal Referral - Open
Water Certification. Upon successful completion, you will earn your certification card from
Huron Scuba. If you purchase a scuba equipment package prior to your first open water
certification dive, there is no charge by Huron Scuba for your Universal Referral. Otherwise, the
fee is $35 and the rental fee for equipment is roughly $90 for a week. Rental fees are nonrefundable and need to be paid again if you rent equipment for another date.
Your Referral Instructor will require that you demonstrate independent ability to perform all
of the skills you acquired in the pool, as well as mastery of the compass. You have been through
“Drivers Ed.” and you are going for your “road test.” If do not feel adequately prepared, contact
us immediately to schedule further instruction. You must be allowed to prove to yourself and
the instructor that you can independently do these skills, otherwise, something is wrong!
1. To rent equipment, you must complete a rental reservation form  and reserve specific
equipment  to better insure that you get the equipment and sizing that you desire. Until you
have completed that form and paid your fees, you have not reserved equipment.
2. You must supply snorkeling equipment as you did in your pool training, such as swimsuit ,
towel , mask , fins , booties , snorkel , defog  and, if you desire, personal mouthpiece .
Bring snacks , sunscreen , and about $40  for air fills (unless part of your paid package),
parking, meals, drinks and, possibly, a windbreaker. Bring your education materials & tables .
3. You must own or rent the following equipment for diving: Wetsuit  appropriate for
conditions, tank  (usually included), regulator set , BC with power inflator , weight belt and
weights  (both usually included). You must own dive tables , logbook , and an underwater
watch or dive computer  (rental OK). Depending upon water temperatures, you may want to
own gloves  and a hood or “Squid Lid” . Your logbook must show dive planning and all
skills performed  - if your instructor doesn’t care about planning for your safety – we do!
4. Huron Scuba can recommend a dive operator, hotel, restaurants, etc. on all islands where we
have experience.  Ask for an appointment with Dave, Al or Rachael. We can also arrange your
hotel or dive packages to assure the best quality and value based upon our experience .
5. It is highly recommended that you upgrade your DAN Student Insurance to regular status
prior to your first dive because the student insurance provides minimal coverage. Call DAN @ 1800-446-2671 and use Sponsor Code #414981 ; it helps Huron Scuba  supply first-aid diving
equipment to all its instructors when you use our sponsor code – thank you.
6. You have earned the first half of the prestigious Open Water Scuba Diver certification card,
which is good for life. Insist that your Referral Instructor evaluate your performance in all pool
skills, plus use of the compass, logbook, dive tables and/or computer, and signs off on 5 dives
(yes 5). You have hired them for their expertise and you should demand nothing less than a
thorough Open Water evaluation to build confidence in these essential skills in case they are
needed . Use the checklist on the back of your Universal Referral form to see the standards .
7. Return your logbook  & paperwork  to Huron Scuba no matter what anyone tells
you. Your Huron Scuba instructor is waiting to issue your NAUI Scuba Diver c-card .
8. If necessary, show this checklist to your instructor.
