The Great London Fire
The old city of London had narrow, crooked streets with wooden houses. It was a dirty
city. In 1665 75,000 Londoners died from Plague. On September 2nd, 1666 a bakery in Pudding
Lane near the London Bridge caught fire.
After a long summer the wooden houses were dry. A wind was blowing from the river. It
blew the flames from house to house, and in the narrow streets the fire spread quickly. The fire
burned for four days. It destroyed 80% of the city.
The people of London built a new city. The houses were made of brick or stone, not
wood. The new streets were straight and they were wider and cleaner too. Sir Christopher Wren
rebuilt St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Three Centres of Power
There are three Centres of power in London. Buckingham Palace is the centre of royal
power. The Houses of Parliament are the centre of political power. Westminster Abbey is the
centre of church power.
Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham. King George III
bought the palace in 1761. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth II and the British
Royal Family. There are nearly six hundred rooms in the palace.
The two Houses of Parliament (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) are in
Westminster Palace. It was built between 1840 and 1860. It was designed by the architect Sir
Charles Barry. The original Palace of Westminster was the home for the Royal Family until the
16th century. Then it became the meeting place of the Parliament.
The present building of Westminster Abbey was started in 1245 by King Henry III.
Nearly all the English Kings and Queens since William I have been crowned in Westminster
Abbey. In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned there.

Mark’s best friend
Mark Lane loves his wife and his dog, but he can’t live without his best friend. And who
is Mark’s best friend? It’s his computer, Zack! Today is a typical day in Lane’s house. Mark is
lying in bed, and Zack is checking Mark’s emails. He’s reading them to Mark. When Mark’s
wife comes in, Mark types “Hello, Lucy” on Zack’s keyboard and Zack says “Hello, Lucy” to
her.
Mark needs Zack because he can’t do things for himself. Mark was in a car accident, and
now he can’t walk or talk. He can see and hear, and he can move two fingers on one hand – but
that’s all. He can’t even say “hello” to Lucy. But Zack can do it for him. Zack helps Mark to
communicate with the world. “Of course, he can’t do everything – he can’t make decisions for
me, and that’s fantastic.”
And it’s all thanks to Dr Paolo Gianni, from Italy. Dr Gianni is developing “smart”
computers for people who can’t do everything for themselves. “We can use computers like Zack
to solve big problems for people like Mark,” says Dr Gianni. And Zack doesn’t just help Mark to
communicate – he also reads emails and web pages to him, and gives him information. He can
even answer the phone – and he’s learning to play chess with Mark! “Zack is becoming a friend
to Mark,” says Dr Gianni. “He can’t give advice, like a real friend – but I’m working on that!”
“Zack is fantastic,” says Mark. “He’s helping me to live again.” And what does Lucy
think about Zack? “I love Zack! He sometimes makes mistakes when he’s talking, but I usually
understand what Mark wants to say, and that’s very important.”

Valentine’s Day
