Choose from the list below to give you the number of points necessary to earn the grade
of your choice. Be sure that you can get any supplies you might need to complete the
activities. 2) The maximum number of points is 30. 3) You and your parent/ guardian
must sign the contract. 4) All selected activities must be completed following the
directions given. 5) All activities must be turned in at the same time in a folder
(excluding models and food). MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON EACH ACTIVITY.
6) You are required to have a two pocket folder while you are completing your research.
All of your information is required to go in this folder. Bring it to class on the day that
your contract is due ________. When the project is due, you will leave only the finished
products in the folder and turn it in. Your name and block number must be clearly
printed on the front and back of the folder in the upper right hand corner.

26-24 pts. = B

OPTIONS: Place an “x” in front of each activity that will be a part of YOUR contract.
_____ 1. Create a double line or double bar graph showing the casualties of the Civil War
for each side (Union and Confederate) from 1861-1865. Your graph must have a title,
labeled axes, and equal intervals. 5 POINTS
_____ 2. Create a free hand drawing of 3-5 different, common weapons used by the
soldiers in battle. Include one large piece such as a cannon. Label the weapons and major
parts. Identify the type of soldiers who would be using each weapon. Color. 5 POINTS
_____ 3. “The March to the Sea” by Sherman will be shown by hand drawing his path
on a map with labeled states. Identify major cities affected by this march. Include at
least three pictures showing the destruction. Give 4 dates to show the location of his
troops on each date.

_____ 4. Create a mini quilt of 9 squares using paper or cloth. Each square should be 4
inches by 4 inches. Fabric squares can be glued with fabric glue. Each square should
illustrate symbols to guide “passengers” as the traveled on the Underground Railroad.
Create a key that explains the meaning of each symbol.

_____5. You will need help from parents and/ or grandparents. Trace your family
ancestry 4 or 5 generations back. Find out who, when and where they were born, and
when they died. Create a family tree drawing showing your family ancestry or use a
down loadable form. 5 POINTS
______6. Create an alphabet picture book of important Civil War words. You must use
at least 15 letters. Pictures can be obtained from the computer, copied, or drawn. They
need to be colored. One sentence must be written about each picture. Make sure to make
a book cover with a title and your name. One letter per page.

______7. Create 3 postcards of 3 different famous battlefields. The picture can be
copied, downloaded, or drawn. On the “back”, write the date of the battle. Describe what
you “saw” at each place. Three facts about the battle should be included in your
"description." 10 POINTS
______8. Create a comic book of one major battle. It should include at least 5 pages.
Pictures and dialogue must be accurate and include at least 5 facts. 15 POINTS
______9. Research the attack on Fort Sumter. Write a newspaper story describing it from
the South’s point of view. Include the 5 W’s, but be sure to add lots of emotion. Five
details about the battle are required to get full credit. Don’t forget to give your article a
title.

_____10. Use colored paper or fabric to create 2 flags that represented the Confederate
States of America. Write a paragraph to explain what the symbols and colors represent
and explain why the changes were made. Make it neat.

______11. Create a time line. Include 2 major events that led to the Civil War. Include
at least 6 major battles (include their location) and two government actions. Include a title
and at least 4 pictures. 10 POINTS
_____12. Research what an army camp hospital was like. Find out about medicines,
treatments for injuries, causes of death, what kind of medical training hospital staff had,
etc. Use this information to write the script for an on-the-scene news report. 10
POINTS. Add 5 POINTS if you perform for the class.
_____13. Andersonville is known as one of the worst prison camps in the country.
Research this one and others. (You may want to try to find personal accounts from
prisoners.) Pretend that you are a prisoner. Keep a diary for 3 days. Include factual
details about treatment by guards, rations of food, medical care, and casualties in the
camps. 10 POINTS
_____14. Make a realistic model of an ironclad. Include a cutaway diagram of the
interior. Label major parts. The model should be no longer than 12 inches. 20 POINTS

leaders for the North and the South. Include this information for each person: Union or
Confederate, date of birth, rank, major victories, major losses, date of death. 15

______16. Find out what typical foods were like during the Civil War. Create a menu for
a restaurant. Include 3 drinks, 3 main dishes, 2 vegetables, and 2 desserts. Include a 1
sentence description for each item. Remember to price your dishes as they would have
been during the Civil War. What will you name your restaurant? 10 POINTS
_____16a. If you fix enough for everyone to have a taste (not a full serving) of one of the
dishes on your menu, you can earn 5 POINTS.
_____17. Study the styles of clothing for an officer’s military uniform and a typical
soldier’s uniform. Draw three fashion plates. One uniform must be a Confederate soldier;
the other must be a Union soldier. The third fashion plate must be a drawing of a
woman’s dress. Include a brief description of the clothing for each. 10 POINTS
_____18. RAFT- Take the role of a soldier (Union or Confederate) who is writing a letter
to his family after the Battle of Gettysburg. Include 5 battle details in your letter as well
as personal information. The RAFT must be at least one page hand written in length or ½
page typed. 10 POINTS
_____19.Create a realistic diorama or model of a specific major battle (No larger than 18
by 18 inches, or you will lose points!) Make sure that it is accurate and specific to your
chosen battle. On an index card, write the title, location, date, who won, and casualties
for both sides. Make sure that the information is firmly attached to your model.

what, when, where, why, and how as they relate to the Civil War. Include other
interesting details. Neatness and color count! 15 POINTS
