A Message From Cliff…
Dear Neighbors,
First, I would like to thank our Vice President, Dave
Peters, for filling in for me while I was deployed
overseas. I made it back just in time for Hurricane
Wilma. In the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, it was
great to see the neighborhood pull together and get
through this significant event as a team. We will be
working with the town of Davie to coordinate the
removal of the remaining debris. I hope to see you in
front of my house on Saturday morning December 17th
for the DavieWest Luminarias Around the Lake 5k
Walk/Run!
Cheers!
Cliff Lockwood, President DWHOA

New Trash Rules…
Town of Davie recently signed an amended contract
with Waste Management and there are now new rules for
our trash pick-up.
1. On Wednesdays the only thing to be picked up
is the green cart (can on wheels) and whatever
you can fit in that cart.
2. On three Saturdays a month, everything must be
put in a green cart. No debris, bags, branches –
nothing that is outside the green cart will be
picked up.
3. The bulk pick-up is now only on specific days
once a month – namely November 19 and
December 17 for this year. A new schedule will
be published for year 2006. Bulk pick-up must
not exceed 15 cubic yards. The bulk cannot be
small twigs, loose leaves, small items. Those
need to go in either the green cart or plastic bags
not to exceed 50 pounds.
4. Davie has an ordinance that provides for a $100
per day fine for trash left streetside more than 12
5. hours prior to collection and 8 hours after
collection.
At no time will old-fashioned garbage cans be
emptied. Excess of 15 cubic yards will incur a
charge from Waste Management.
It costs only $18.00 per year to obtain an extra green
cart. If you find that you exceed the 1 green cart
often, please call Waste Management and order an
extra cart.
Our trash fees are going to appear on our tax bills
from Broward County starting with the bills to come
out soon. You will be paying it with your tax bill
instead of quarterly billing from Waste
Management.
The phone number for Waste
Management is 954-974-7500 for any questions.

Town of Davie Hurricane Debris Pickup…
The Town of Davie has completed its first pass for
debris pick up and is currently working on its second
pass. The second pass will be complete by December 3.
Residents are to continue placing their hurricane-related
debris curbside in two piles: the first with vegetative
debris, including fencing; and the second with
construction debris. The Town?s tree stump policy is
under review, but currently the Town will not pick up
tree stumps from private property.

Luminarias…
Luminarias has been a tradition in Davie West for many,
many years. This is a special night when the streets are
lined with white paper bags, filled with sand and a small
tealight candle illuminates the bags. It looks beautiful!
Many neighbors take the opportunity to have parties and
gatherings on this night.
December 17th will be Luminaria Night this year.
Because of Wilma, our Halloween picnic had to be
cancelled in October. In lieu of the picnic, the funds will
be put towards a horse drawn hayride that will be going
throughout Davie West on the night of Luminaria’s.
Please feel free to hop on the hay ride when it comes by
your house. Please remember that all children must be
accompanied by an adult!
In addition to the night activities, we have the Children’s
Christmas Party during the day! And as is tradition, we
have asked a special guest to join us! The party will take
place at The Lemier’s house at ______. Parents of
children attending, are asked to drop off a small gift for
their child, wrapped and labeled with his/her name
before the party. The children always have a great time!
This year we will be adding an event! We will have the
Luminaria’s Around the Lake 5K Fun Run/Walk! All
families and friends of Davie West residents are invited
to attend! Please see the attached flyer for more details!!
It will be so much fun (and a little friendly
competition)!!
I Remember When…
I remember when I first discovered Davie West. My
brother-in-law had come up from El Salvador to find
hunting dogs and my husband Don knew someone who
knew someone who told him where he could find some
of the hunting dogs my brother in law wanted. So we
took off out of Plantation, where we lived, and headed
down State Road 84 (which was four-lane and had
fabulously, beautiful tall pine trees lining the way
between the road and the canal). Just about where I
would turn left onto Hiatus road, there was one of those
pine trees with a long rope and knots tied at different
intervals along it. There was also a rickety bridge over
the canal into what is now Plantation Acres.
We drove on Hiatus Road in search of the place where
they had those dogs….it was a country road, well used,
full of potholes and surrounded by farm land. We came
across an entrance. There was split-rail, creosote fencing
on either side with signs nailed to them saying “Davie
West”. We turned in looking for street signs and found
none. So we went out and eventually found the farm we
were searching for and got our dogs. When my husband
got home that night, I told him that we would be living
in Davie West very soon.
A few months later, my friend found our homesite in
Davie West. She was looking for herself but couldn’t
afford it and said that she knew Don could handle it,
finishing a house that had been started, not completed
and was now for sale. Our agent introduced us to their
agent (Joyce Steward) and the deal was done. Don
worked on the home every night after work and on
weekends .I came occasionally during the day to meet
contractors and delivery trucks. I remember Jennifer
Sigmon (now Pursell) was about four and she came over
and said, “My Mom wants me to ask you if you have
any children my age”. I walked over and met Janie
Sigmon and introduced her to my children …yes, there
was a child Jennifer’s age, Kerry. Janie offered her
bathroom facilities (yeah!) and introduced her husband
Bill when he came home from work. She told us about
St.David’s Church, which held masses in a warehouse in
Cooper City, and where the closest grocery store was,
etc. There was no Winn Dixie, no Publix Shopping
Center, no Broward Mall and no Pine Island Ridge
Center. Slowly we met other neighbors Jim and Zena
Brook, Dianne and Jim Aucamp, Gloria and Jess
Thomas, Nancy and Lee Blake and many more as they
moved in and built their homes….and guess
what?....They all had kids around the same ages as ours!
Not that they all gat along as chum-buddies or anything
but there was a “passle” of kids in here. Oh, I remember
the “Shannon Boys”…they were into every sport known
to man and were very cute…Jimmy Aucamp (speaking
of cute) had a fruit stand at the end of Hiatus Road and
State Road 84 – there was no 595 either. Jimmy’s Dad,
Jim, had a nursery and supplied all of us with the black
olive trees that abound in Davie West. I got involved
with the Homeowner’s Association when Jim Brook was
president and he wanted to enter a Davie West float in
the Orange Blossom Parade. He mentioned to me that
they were looking for ideas and I suggested a big boot
made like they used to make floats when I went to U. of
M. We made it. Added a hay wagon to it and all of our
kids rode on it dressed alike in blue gingham prairie
dresses and blue jeans and bandannas. We won First
Place !….I wonder where that trophy is ?
By the way, that rope hanging on the tree on State Road
84….well, the kids used to swing from it to swim in the
canal with their inner tubes…
Holiday Shopping Safety Tips…Take Extra
Precaution…
Shopping during the holiday season can present unique
danger. Taking a few prevention measurers can help
keep your holiday season joyous.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can
become careless and vulnerable to theft and other
holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles
Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help
you be more careful, prepared and aware during the
holiday season.
 Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you
must shop at night, go with a friend or family
member.
 Dress casually and comfortably.
 Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
 Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.
 Always carry your Driver’s License or Identification
Card along with necessary cash, checks and/or a
credit card you expect to use.
 Even though you are rushed and thinking about a
thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.
 Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
 Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when
possible.
 Keep cash in your front pocket.
 Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit
card is lost, stolen or misused.
 Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a
safe place at home.
 Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse.
They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded
shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops,
on buses and other rapid transit.
 Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is
important to have clear visibility and freedom of
motion to avoid mishaps.
Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At
this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods
of distracting you with the intention of taking your
money or belongings.
Avoiding weight gain during the holidays…
Between Thanksgiving and the New Year, many people
find it easy to gain 6 or 7 pounds. In fact, some experts
say that number can go as high as 15 pounds by spring if
you’re not conscious of what you eat.
The body has a harder time fighting off calories during
the holidays because our natural biorhythms work
against us in cold weather. A tendency toward decreased
activity in the winter is another factor. The
combination of slowed activity and increased intake of
high-calorie food and drink can add up to significant
weight gain over the holidays — and throughout the cold
winter months.
Here are some tips taken from UPMC Health Journal:
Don’t starve yourself.
“It’s hard to maintain control in
starvation mode, so don’t skip meals and go hungry,”
says Dr. Fernstrom. “Make it a point to eat regularly
during the day. Between meals, chew sugarless gum or
mints. And before going out to a dinner or a party, have
some clear soup, raw vegetables, or fresh fruit. This will
help you stay in control when facing a variety of
tempting, high-calorie foods.”
Think before you fill your plate.
Cruise the dinner
table or party buffet first, and then decide which foods
you will eat. The first bite or two is what we savor the
most, so take small helpings. “Be a ‘taster,’ and you
won’t feel deprived,” says Dr. Fernstrom. “As a special
treat, allow yourself a second helping of only one item.
Concentrated sweets and fats and alcohol often cause
holiday weight gain because they contain a lot of empty
calories. It’s best to limit or avoid those common
culprits.”
Control your portions. Controlling portions is one
approach to healthy holiday eating, and so is making
wise choices about what you eat. Completely depriving
yourself of holiday treats is not very effective because
it’s not realistic. Limiting your intake is more
manageable. For instance, eat one cookie and then move
away from the sweets tray to avoid gorging. Barter calories.
If you choose to eat one high-calorie
food, choose not to eat another. If you want roasted nuts,
which are high in calories, take fewer nuts and add raw
vegetables or pretzels, which are lower in calories. To
minimize high-calorie alcoholic beverages, use noncalorie mixers, or dilute wine with sparkling water to
make a “spritzer” with half the calories.
“Keep in
mind that ‘fat-free’ foods and drinks often have lots of
calories,” Dr. Fernstrom says.
Don’t “clean your plate” to please your
hostess.
Instead, stop when you feel content rather than
stuffed. And don’t announce you’re on a diet. It can be a
trigger for some people to urge you to eat more. If you
are hosting the party, provide a nutritious spread that
your guests, and their bodies, will enjoy by substituting
common high-calorie foods with fresh produce. When
you put out fresh fruits instead of chocolate cookies or
serve sliced vegetables and a low-fat dip instead of highcalorie hors d’ouevres, you will help everyone establish
a healthy holiday. Keep your activity level high to burn extra calories.
Take the stairs at the office. Park farther from your
destination. Before shopping, walk briskly around the
mall several times. Dance to music while you cook.
Holiday Trivia…
• The use of a Christmas wreath as a decoration on your
front door, mantel or bay window symbolizes a sign of
welcome and long life to all who enter. (If your neighbor
takes their wreath off the door as you are walking up the
drive, you may not be welcome!)
• During the Christmas buying season, Visa cards alone
are used an average of 5,340 times every minute in the
United States. (Isn’t it great to help boost statistics!)
• The movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000)
features more than 52,000 Christmas lights, about 8,200
Christmas ornaments, and nearly 2,000 candy canes. (Oh
my, can you imagine the size the attic that they store all
of that??)
• Hannukah is celebrated around the world for eight days
and nights. Hannukah celebrates the victory of the
Maccabees or Israelites over the Greek-Syrian ruler,
Antiochus about 2200 years ago. A Menorah is a special
nine-branched candelabrum, also known in Hebrew as a
Hanukkiyyah. Each night of Hannukah, an additional
candle is placed in the Menorah from right to left, and
then lit from left to right. On the last night, all the
candles are lit. A dreidle, or sivion is a four-sided top
that has a Hebrew letter on each side. During Hannukah,
families eat latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly
donuts), or other foods which are fried in oil, to celebrate
and commemorate the miracle of the Festival of Lights.
(Does this mean 8 nights IN A ROW of cooking!!)
• Santa's reindeer are named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer,
Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Oh - and of
course, Rudolph.
A note from a visitor has added a correction to one of the
reindeer:The name Donner is actually "Donder." It was
mispronounced in a song many years ago and never
changed back to it's original form. (Poor guy has been
called by the wrong name all these years!)
