JOB DESCRIPTION PARENTS AS TEACHERS PARENT EDUCATOR GENERAL EMPLOYMENT DESCRIPTION To implement the Parents As Teachers (PAT) program by empowering parents to be their child’s first and best teacher, focusing on the following aspects: o To provide parents with information on child development from birth to age 5. o To promote learning opportunities which encourage intellectual, language, social, emotional, and motor development. o To utilize family empowerment principles in all aspects of work. RESPONSIBILITIES Critical areas of responsibility in the following areas: Home visits Parent meetings Screenings and referrals Recordkeeping/Reporting Family Support Professional Development Evaluation Other Duties as Assigned Specific Duties: o o o o o o o o o o o Home Visits Meet the family to establish rapport, describe the program, and offer support and assistance. Visit the parent and child at least once monthly, but more often as necessary. Provide handouts for the parent, specifically geared to the age of the child, at the time of the visit and maintain handout files. Model and discuss parenting skills and involve the parent in activities that she can do herself to encourage intellectual, language, social and emotional, and motor development in her child. Prepare and clean materials. Encourage literacy through book sharing each visit. Reinforce competence and confidence in each parent. Identify resources available to the family and help with acquisition. Advocate for the child and family. Maintain client confidentiality. Provide information packets on Resource Library, imagination library and other Smart Start sponsored activities. SMART START OF DAVIE COUNTY, INC. Updated 5/21/08 Parent Meetings o Plan and conduct group sessions for families (at least six per year). Screening o Monitor growth and development of each child to reassure parents that child is developing appropriately and to identify problems early so as to assist parents with early intervention. o Assist parents in answering AGES and STAGES questionnaire at least twice during each year of enrollment. o Conduct annual health questionnaire to check for immunizations, dental care and other health issues. Recordkeeping/Reporting o Keep accurate and confidential records on every family in the program, including referral, enrollment, personal visit, individual service, referral, exit and summary of service records. o Complete any reporting or administrative records as requested by the Partnership (Smart Start) and/or Parents as Teachers National Center. o Communicate regularly with program supervisor on status of families. o Distribute and collect surveys annually. Family Support o Utilize Family Support goal setting techniques for decision making and problem solving o Identify resources available to families and cooperate with agencies as needed to access services. o Encourage participation in all Partnership services. o o o o Professional Development Complete required number of hours each year to maintain Parents As Teachers credential Attend staff meetings Attend other staff development opportunities as needed. Complete annual performance plan, program and parent educator evaluation. Evaluation o Systematically collect information about activities, characteristics, and outcomes of Family Support to assist staff and Board of Directors with data regarding progress toward goals and objectives of Partnership and Family Support. Other Duties as Assigned o Perform other duties as necessary to promote and foster the mission of Smart Start of Davie County. Working Relationship with Others: Primary working relationship with assigned families. Accountable to PAT Coordinator and Executive Director. Updated 5/21/08 GENERAL EMPLOYMENT DETAILS At least a two-year degree in Education, Health, Child Development, Sociology, or a related field is preferred, but not required. An equivalent combination of education, experience and skills and abilities will be considered. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) ability is required/preferred, because we will either staff with two part-time Educators (one fully bilingual), or one full-time Educator (fully bilingual). Experience working with diverse populations, families and/or children birth to age five necessary. Demonstrated knowledge of early childhood development and early childhood education necessary. Computer competency required. Willingness to work some evenings and/or weekends. Strong interpersonal skills crucial to success. Reliable vehicle necessary. Work Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week, or Part Time, 20 hours per week.
