IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS and STRUCTURE
A. Attendance/Withdrawal: Although class participation is highly encouraged,
we recognize that not all students are able to attend every week. In cases where
the student will miss two or more weeks, please contact the professor or program
administrative assistant with information as soon as possible. It is the
responsibility of each student to submit assignments and become aware of other
activities missed during absences.
Note #1: In accordance with university policy, each faculty member has the
responsibility and authority to determine whether make-up work can be done
because of absences. No individual additional “extra credit” activities will be
granted. Make-up exams are discussed in the “exam” paragraph.
Note #2: In rare, emergency cases, students may qualify for an incomplete
grade, which is recorded as a “K” on the grade report and transcript. Requests for
incomplete grades must be made according to TAMUCT policy and approved by the
instructor prior to the final week of classes. All requirements must be completed
by the end of the next long semester or the “K” automatically changed to an “F.”
Note #3: The last day to drop a course with no record this semester is
published in the University Catalog on the Academic Calendar page(s).
B. Assignments: Reading assignments will be in accordance with this
syllabus and as assigned in class. Students are expected to become familiar with
information and assignments prior to discussion periods scheduled for each class.
HRM 516.110
Fall 2014 - p. 4
All assessments, including unit review assignments and exams will be completed
through Blackboard Learn.
Assignment point values are indicated in the syllabus and in Blackboard
Learn. Because assignments oftentimes link one-to-another, late assignments will
be scored as a zero if submitted after the assignment closes in Blackboard.
Students who are absent from class activities are encouraged to submit their
assignments early to avoid late penalties, assessed at a minimum of 25% per day
late. (Note: The date scheduled in Blackboard may be extended up to one week
following the scheduled due date.)
Unless otherwise announced, ASSIGNMENTS and DISCUSSIONS, UNIT
REVIEWS and EXAMS are due at 11:59 p.m. the last class day listed in the week
assigned. Exercise Book assignments should be submitted on the forms provided,
using clearly legible handwriting or typed, and memo assignments must be prepared
in appropriate typewritten format. (See sample format within the LEARNING
RESOURCES tab.)
C. Written Work Format and Quality: Unless otherwise indicated, all outside
written work must be typed double-spaced on white 8-1/2” x 11” paper, using black
ink. Students are required to use the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association (APA) (6th ed.) as the primary reference as they prepare
their formal work for submission. Most written work will be submitted for grading
with a cover sheet (including title of work, student name, university, course and
section number, professor, date, etc.) and stapled at the upper left-hand corner.
Items submitted are expected to be of graduate quality, language and depth and in
APA format. Points will be deducted for poor grammar, spelling and appearance.
Note #1: All 5-point assignments are exempt from the cover page
requirement.
Note #2: No plastic folders will be used, except in such cases as specifically
necessary to support course objectives.
Note #3: Items containing more than three errors may be returned for
correction and resubmission. The highest grade that will be assigned to a
resubmission is a ‘C.’
D. Research-based Journal Article Review: Each student is required to submit
one written article review on an outside research-based journal reading, that is
directly related to compensation management. Emphasis must be placed on current
topics that directly affect the compensation function, so articles should be dated
within the last 24 months.
The article review will be presented in a two-part format: (1) narrative
summary (not a list) of the journal article author's key points, and (2) student's
interpretation of organizational implications or considerations as related to the
administration of compensation programs. The written assignment will not exceed
three type-written pages, with a copy of the article attached for reference. The
HRM 516.110
Fall 2014 - p. 5
American Psychological Association Publication Manual (6th ed.) format will be used
and several appropriate reference citations will be made within the body of the
report. Students will demonstrate use of titles, page headers and reference
citations to produce papers rivaling professional quality.
Article review papers submitted for any other class may not be used for
credit in this course. Students should use their best writing skills in the
development of this short paper, and are encouraged to seek assistance from the
professor on this important assignment.
Note #1: A journal, such as the Journal of Compensation and Benefits, must
be used for this assignment; magazine articles will not meet this requirement.
Check with Dr. Lyon or TAMUCT library staff if you need further clarification on
this requirement.
Note #2: The article review will be submitted with a cover sheet (including
student name, course number, title of work, date, etc.) and stapled at the upper
left-hand corner. The reference will be provided at the bottom of the cover page,
in lieu of a separate reference page. The article review is due at the beginning of
the assigned class period.
Note #3: Points will be deducted for poor grammar, spelling and appearance.
Papers containing more than three errors may be returned for correction and
resubmission. The highest grade that will be assigned to a resubmission is a ‘C.’
Note #4: Students are encouraged to arrange appointments to review clean
draft copies with Dr. Lyon; appointments for this activity will be accepted through
week ten.
Note #5: Graded article reviews will be returned to students before the end
of the semester.
E. Library Services: Information literacy focuses on research skills that
prepare individuals to live and work in an information-centered society. Librarians
will work with students in the development of critical reasoning, ethical use of
information, and the appropriate use of secondary research techniques including:
exploring information resources such as library collections and services,
identifying sources such as subject databases and scholarly journals, executing
effective search strategies, retrieving, recording, and citing relevant results
correctly, and interpreting search results and deciding whether to expand the
search. Library resources are outlined and accessed through the web page:
http://www.tarleton.edu/centraltexas/departments/library/
F. Exams: There will be two exams during the semester. The exams may be
comprised of various cognitive/objective, short answer and problem items.
Although teamwork is permitted in most activities completed during the semester,
exams will be the independent work of students. (Teamwork will not be permitted
on exams.)
HRM 516.110
Fall 2014 - p. 6
Note: Anyone absent during the mid-term exam will be required to
coordinate a make-up period with Dr. Lyon. All make-up exams must be completed
before December 1, 2014.
G. Requests for Incomplete Grades: In rare, emergency cases, students may
qualify for an incomplete grade, which is recorded as a “K” in the transcript.
Requests for incomplete grades must be made in writing, according to TAMUCT
SOBA policy, and approved by the instructor prior to the final week of classes.
All requirements must be met by the end of the next long semester or the “K” will
be automatically changed to an “F.”
H. Grade Computation: Students earn their final course grades by effectively
completing scheduled assignments; no individual extra credit assignments are
given. To satisfactorily pass this course, students must complete each of the
primary items listed below. Failure to submit appropriate documents/ activities
for grading in each category will result in a failing grade. Final grades will be
calculated as follows:
Exams (2 each)...[560 pts].......56%
Assignments........[240 pts].......24%
Discussions….…….[100 pts]..........10%
Article Review.....[100 pts]........10%
[1,000 pts]
100%
A = 100% - 90.0%
B = 89.9% - 80.0%
C = 79.9% - 70.0%
F = 69.9% & below
I. Academic Integrity: Texas A&M University--Central Texas expects its
students to maintain high standards of personal and scholarly conduct. Students
guilty of academic dishonestly are subject to disciplinary action. Academic
dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on an examination or other
academic work, plagiarism, collusion, and the abuse of resource materials. The
faculty member is responsible for initiating action for each case of academic
dishonestly. More information can be found at www.tamuct.org/studentaffairs.
J. Changes to Syllabus: A syllabus serves as an instructional and study
planning document for both faculty and students. Although every effort will be
taken to complete the semester according to the syllabus, it may become
necessary to make certain changes to better facilitate the academic environment.
In such an event, changes will be announced in class and students will receive
written notice within one week of the change decision. Changes may be made
within the last two weeks of the semester only in exceptional circumstances.
Conflicts between Blackboard and the syllabus will be resolved according to the
syllabus requirements.

0. Blackboard Learn Success Guidelines: Remember that technology issues
are not an excuse for missing a course requirement. To help you with the
technical aspects of using the Blackboard Learn system, please be sure that you
understand and follow the following guidelines.
1. Check browser and computer compatibility by following the “Browser
Check” link on the TAMUCT Blackboard Learn logon page
(http://tamuct.blackboard.com). This is a CRITICAL step, as these
settings are important for when you take an exam or submit an assignment.
You may, for example, find that Blackboard Learn recommends use of
Mozilla Firefox instead of the newest versions of Microsoft Internet
Explorer, so be sure to follow instructions following your browser check.
2. Blackboard Learn supports the most common operating systems: PC:
Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, Mac OS 10.6
“Snow Leopard®”, Mac OS 10.5 “Leopard®”, Mac OS 10.4 “Tiger®”
3. The Blackboard Learn assessment (testing) application may be more reliable
if you use Mozilla Firefox instead of newer versions of Microsoft Explorer.
You may find it beneficial to download Firefox prior to the scheduled date
for the first quiz.
4. Upon logging on to Blackboard Learn, you will see a link to Blackboard
Student Orientation under My Courses tab. Click on that link and study the
materials in this orientation course. The new Blackboard is a brand-new
interface and you will have to come up to speed with it really quickly. This
orientation course will help you get there. There is also a link to Blackboard
Help from inside the course on the left-hand menu bar. The first week of
the course includes activities and assignments that will help you get up to
speed with navigation, sending and receiving messages and discussion posts,
and submitting an assignment. Your ability to function within the
Blackboard application will facilitate your success in this course. (The
Blackboard Student Orientation and other related information are also
available within the course at the “Blackboard Information” tab on the left
menu.)
