The Building Safer Communities Regional Action Team Committee would like to
invite you or a representative from your organisation to attend the Safer
Communities Planning workshop. 11.00am to 1.00pm, Atherton Boardroom,
Tablelands Regional Council Building, Mabel Street, Atherton. At the planning
workshop you or your representative will be asked to identify your organisations
priorities for the Tablelands for 2013. To identify what issues you think need to
be addressed in areas such as safety, crime prevention, health and wellbeing for
the Tablelands region. Your input will also assist us to review and update our
Strategic Plan 2012. Background - In 2008, at the request of the Queensland
Police Service, Tablelands Regional Council agreed to participate in the
Queensland Crime Prevention Strategy. The intent of this program is to partner
with the Community, NGO's and Government agencies including the QLD Police
to share the responsibility for preventing crime, reducing the fear of crime and
building safer communities by promoting community safety across the
Tablelands region. The primary purpose of this initiative is the enhancement of
community safety. The Safer Communities group meets monthly and is
comprised of representatives from business, community services and
government agencies with a focus on identifying and implementing projects
which address the underlying causes of crime and fear of crime in the
Tablelands Regional Council region. This committee is chaired by Cr Marjorie
Pagani and the committee provides a strategic link between Council’s
Community Planning & Development section and key community stakeholders to
co-ordinate the gathering of relevant evidence, information sharing, identification
and co-ordination of projects to address priority issues. The objectives of this
initiative are to increase the perception that the Tablelands is a safe place for
families to live, work, play, visit and to retire. To provide a mechanism for
collaborative processes of community, NGO's and government agencies on the
journey to building safer communities on the Tablelands and to support the
operation of the Tablelands Building Safer Communities Action Team. Expected
outcomes include increased collaboration and co-ordination, strategic oversight
and support for local partners regarding building safer communities and
ultimately better outcomes for Tablelands Communities. We do hope you or
your representative will be able to spare 2 hours to attend our planning morning.
Could you please R.S.V.P. Ph: 4043 4115 or email joyw@trc.qld.gov.au for
catering purposes as lunch will be provided.

MAD, BAD OR SAD? A Pathway to Healing - SEMINAR FULL DAY - Presented
by Gregory Nicolau. Gregory Nicolau is the CEO and Consultant Psychologist of
Australian Childhood Trauma Group. He has a 30 year career working with the
most marginalized and vulnerable children, young people and families in our
community and the agencies, organisations and education facilities who support
them. He has an exceptional reputation dealing with complex cases and
situations in a compassionate and focused manner. He’s transparent in dealing
with staff and organisations and able to challenge when appropriate. He enjoys
18
supporting people to deliver the best outcomes for children and is an
experienced trainer, facilitator and case supervisor. Gregory is also founder and
chair of Random Acts of Kindness. It’s conclusive – childhood trauma caused by
sexual, physical, emotional abuse or neglect ‘changes the brain’ in ways that
impact a child’s ability to form strong relationships and be the ‘boss of their
feelings’.
The objectives of this seminar are:
• To understand the impact of trauma on our psychological, physiological and
spiritual being
• To develop an ability to read the ‘signs’ of trauma
• To reflect on the ways in which healthy attachments are impacted by trauma
• To explore what to do and when to do it or develop strategies to ease the
impact of trauma
• To reflect upon approaches to healthier attachments
• To learn about ‘self care’ when in the presence of a child’s expressed or
repressed distress
9.30am Registrations, 10am - 4pm Seminar, Civic Reception Rooms, Ground
floor, Cairns Regional Council, 119 – 145 Spence Street, Cairns. COST: Free for
foster and kinship carers or carer applicants, $40 for government employees and

practical six-week groupwork programs for schools and agencies. Innerspace is
a multiple intelligence approach to supporting students, based on the theories
and activities of Expressive Therapies. There is a particular focus on developing
the intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences – knowing self and being able to
communicate. Both levels of Innerspace support students affected by grief and
loss; those at risk of depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, and
developing behavioural difficulties. Help your students expand their selfunderstanding; improve interpersonal effectiveness; develop the skills of selfreflection, emotional support and empathic communication. These programs
present new ways to foster resilience and mental wellbeing in students. Help
students:
 Develop emotional literacy Resolve feelings of isolation
 De-stress Open up and share their concerns
 Form more supportive peer bonds Develop emotional self-care skills

Morning Melodies - Cheek to Chic - Celebrating Noel and Cole starring Hilary
Henshaw with special guest Peter Hurley. This is one swellegant,
elegant…marvellous party you won't want to miss! Noel Coward and Cole
Poter's witty words and musical gems sparkle with fresh interpretation from the
creative collaboration ofde-lovely Hilary Henshaw and de-very versatile Peter
Hurley. This original production combines Noel and Cole's magnificent melodies,
stylish scenarios and irreverent humour with intriguing insights into their parallel
careers and colourful lives. Timeless favourites, including "I'll See You Again", "A
Room With A View" and, of course, "Mrs Worthington" from Noel and "Let's Do
It", "Wunderbar" and "Night and Day" from Cole, as well as some lesser-known
delightful surprises, are performed with panache, pizzazz and pathos. Noel and
Cole's unique genius is as irresistible to audiences today as it was when their
work first delighted an adoring public from the 1920's onwards. Hilary Henshaw's
almost life-time professional career has involved performing with many of
Australia's major theatrical organisations including Opera, Operetta and Musical
Theatre productions, as well as on television and in the recording studio. Peter
Hurley's varied career has included working with the A.B.C., State Orchestra or
Victoria and performing his own show at The Melbourne Comedy Festival.

year’s theme was selected by the National NAIDOC Committee to celebrate the
