Silverstone Classic
We had a splendid entry of over 60 FJcars. With places for only 44 cars on the FJ grid and 8 reserves to practice,
HGPCA came to the rescue to help fill their grids , so 16 FJs are doing battle with the pre 61 or pre 66 F1s., and
have two races each. Lotus 27s were, however, not encouraged …!!. Those kindly opting to transfer have no further
dues to pay beyond the FJ entry fee – those racing with HGPCA as well as FJ need pay an extra £225 to FJHRA if
HGPCA members , or £325 if not. Entry lists attached. “H” on the FJ entry list indicates a transfer to HGPCA
FJHRA have purchased 3 tables [ 30 places] as indicated in the entry forms for the formal DJDinner/Dance at “the
Farm” on Saturday night. Menu attached. The price is outrageous, but all those who indicated acceptance are asked
to come anyway, and just pay FJHRA what you can afford/ think realistic ,; FJ enjoys a good party, and we will be
there dancing till 1 am- remember Hockenheim – we will see them all out….
Andrew and Sue Spence are coming – give them a great welcome , but also Andrew will need a motorhome to have a
rest from time to time, so lets make sure we take care of him. We managed to get them passes in the end –
Silverstone have been holding on to them like clams
There is a photo shoot at Silverstone on Thursday evening at 5pm – Steve Smith[Cooper T59], Dave Abbott with
Crispian’s Elva 100, and W Ian Robinson, making a welcome reappearance with the Autosud, will represent FJ. It
was supposed to be at County Hall, but was cancelled at a moment’s notice , which was a pity, as the Alexis was
specially brought back to London from Spa, only for no avail
Just to let you know that if FJHRA members order their tickets through the CSCC they
are discounted down to £7.50 per day, (MIN PURCHASE OF 2 NO.)
Quote the discount code "CLACSC" and use the tel no. you have : 08704 558260
The Classic Sports Car Club has a stand at the show, and welcomes anyone who would
like to join us with their picnics on any of the days

17 July 2006
Dear Pierre de Coninck
2007 FIA HISTORIC FORMULA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
I acknowledge receipt of your letter of 7 July, as requested.
Whilst I note what you say, there are clearly a number of points that your letter raises.
1.
I fear that if the FIA Motorsport World Council did decide, as you state, then
they were clearly not informed, or ill-informed as to the integrated administration
of Historic Formula Junior, and of the history of the appointment of FJHRE as
the first series organiser to be approved by the FIA HMSC to run its own FIA
Championship. It is also disappointing that you should be writing in such terms
without any previous consultation with myself as coordinator, the drivers or the
teams
4
2.
3.
You state that the World Council resolved that “those last remaining”FIA
[Historic] Championships will in future be administered directly by FIA”, but
this statement is not true. I understand that the FIA TGP Championship which,
like the FIA Lurani Trophy, is for original and authentic Formula cars, will
continue to be run by its own organisation. So, please, why has Historic Formula
Junior been selected and not TGP, when I understand from the Chairman and
members of the FIA Historic Motorsport Commission that the Commission is
perfectly satisfied with the current administration of the FIA Lurani Trophy, and
indeed it was only in 2001 that the FIA presented a special ‘FIA Lurani Trophy’
to myself for “The excellent organisation of the FIA Lurani Trophy” and in 2004
I received on behalf of the FIA Lurani Trophy/FJHRA the International
Motorsports Award for the Championship of the Year 2003
“.
Whilst I understand that the FIA and the organisers of the FIA Historic
Championship for Touring and GT cars have had difficulties in their relationship,
no such difficulties have arisen with the FIA Lurani Trophy. Indeed, whilst I can
understand the similarity between the Touring and GT Championships which are
for FIA regulation cars, whether original or otherwise, there is a considerable
difference in ethos from Historic Formula Junior, which is for original cars in
original specification, and FIA passport replica cars are not permitted. This clear
positioning, which is an identical ethos to that of TGP, has meant that FIA
passport replica Formula Junior cars do not exist, to the betterment of all
involved in Historic Formula Junior.
4.
You say that the decision by the FIA to run all its own FIA Championships will
be for the benefit of the competitors. I do not think this statement can be
substantiated. At the FIA Lurani Trophy race at Spa-Francorchamps this
weekend , all 42 Lurani competitors present expressed their unanimous
disapproval of the FIA proposals for the future administration of a FIA Formula
Junior Championship . Almost without exception I can say that all participants in
the FIA Lurani Trophy are satisfied with the administration and efforts of FJHRE
in completing a calendar of events each year in an era where there is ever
increasing reluctance by Historic Racing organisers to put on FIA Championship
events. Perhaps the financial power of the FIA will be able to change this, in
providing the necessary grids, without increasing the costs and bureaucracy for
the competitors and, if so, I and all other participants would welcome this.
Somehow, however, I find it difficult to believe that this will happen, with a paid
secretariat replacing the present structure.
5.
You anticipate a future request to forward files and archives to the FIA. There
are no such items belonging to the FIA. In its 12 years of existence, FJHRE as
organiser of the FIA Lurani Trophy has received not one penny of support from
the FIA to date, save and except the cost of the annual trophies. All archive
material relating to the history of Formula Junior belongs either to myself,
personally, the Formula One Register, FJHRE or FJHRA; all computer records
similarly . Such data is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998 and /or
copyright and it would be an offence under the Data Protection Act to
disseminate such information or individual parts of it without authority.
5
6.
At the present time FJHRE has a carried forward accumulated loss on the running
of the FIA Lurani Trophy Championship rounds. This loss has to date been
covered by loans from me personally. I presume that in taking over the
administration of the FIA Historic Formula Junior Championships, the FIA will
take over the deficit and repay to me the amount of the loans outstanding as at
the season end after the last round, and audited statements have been produced. I
shall be pleased if you will confirm. Plans had been formulated, in the event of a
2007 Championship, to stem the loss, and recover the deficit in time – clearly this
will not longer be possible, and the transfer to FIA would otherwise, but for the
transfer of such deficit, cause me severe personal financial loss, which could not
be acceptable.
7.
The title of the ‘Lurani Trophy’ was granted in 1995 by the Lurani family to
FJHRE for their use in connection with the Historic Formula Championship
which they were authorised to run by the FIA. It does not belong to the FIA nor
is there any authority for the FIA to use this title except in relation to a
championship run by FJHRE.
8.
Once the secretariat that is to be established to run the 2007 Historic Formula
Junior Championship is in place, I should be pleased to receive the names and
contact details. Provided there are no significant changes from the current rules,
for the 2007 Championship and, in particular, that FIA passport replicas are not
permitted to run in that Championship, then FJHRA will be pleased to give the
FIA tacit support in relation to the 2007 Championship, and to forward details to
all its members, requesting them to contact FIA to register their interest and for
further information regarding the 2007 Championship. If, however, FIA passport
replicas were to be permitted in future FIA Formula Junior Championships, then
it would no longer be Historic Formula Junior, and of no interest to FJHRA or its
members.
9.
No calendar plans have yet been formulated for a 2007 Historic Formula
Championship, except preliminary discussions with the organisers of an Historic
Festival in Brno, CZ for such an event. The contact is Mr Steve Lydon and his email is maison.tournesol@wanadoo.fr. In previous years it has proved
increasingly difficult to organise such a calendar, and each race is arranged on an
ad hoc basis. No doubt the FIA plan to coordinate this Championship’s dates
with the other Championships in the future.
I hope you will find this information helpful.
Yours sincerely
DUNCAN C P RABAGLIATI
Although I am quite pragmatic about it , as I feel it would be as well for all to see how the FIA would
run an Historic FJ Championship, all 42 FJ drivers at Spa were unanimous against the proposal , and I
suggested thatpersonal letters to the FIA in Geneva , expressing individual views, would be important
to enable the FIA to understand the weight of opinion .. !!
Alan Putt has added some historical background
6
Dear Duncan
I read of the change in administration of FIA Championship events initially in the minutes of the
Monaco meeting of the FIA HMSC. I was surprised then and having read the resulting letter I am
appalled.
.
You may not know this but I was responsible for prompting the then Historic Commission into
"privatising" the FIA Championships. I wrote a paper which outlined the idea and it was adopted.
As it stood in the early 'nineties; the two FIA Historic Championships were run with almost no help
from Paris. Results were never available at intermediate rounds and the final results were not always
published. To claim that the organisers have run the series with assistance from the FIA is a travesty;
the organisers have run the series with little or no help from the FIA.
It might be worth bringing the matter to the attention of John Hughes whose Working Group is
supposed to be looking at various aspects of historic motor sport and I think that the status of those
organising events on behalf of the FIA, who have done so very successfully for the last ten or twelve
years, should be preserved.
Any help you need in this ,let me know.

VINTAGE RACECAR JOURNAL - Formula Junior Article – April 2006
There was excellent coverage of Formula Junior in that issue , so do try and get your back
issue , or take out a sub, not least to read Mike Lawrence’s monthly column – he hasn’t
recounted driving 21 miles in the Alexis GT with the hand brake full on – yet !!
Editor, Casey Annis wrote
Just wanted to touch to mention of our April issue, which included not only a major cover
story on the rare Australian Jolus F.Jr., but we also had columns and features espousing the
significance of the FJHRA, yourself, and the American efforts here by Marc Nichols and
friends to get Juniors more respect and events!
Anyway, historically we have devoted more pages per year to Junior history and events than I
think anyone, but we can always use any help that we can get in spreading the word about
VRJ. Perhaps you could spread the word to your members that we would offer them an
extension of our Stoneleigh sub offer of £20 for 12 monthly issues of VRJ? Subs and inquiries

Take a mini-break to Europe this year
Possibly a longer but more accurate title would be "Why should I encourage my other half to enter at
least one round of the Lurani Trophy and take me along too?"
It does not matter whether your knowledge of cars is limited to "that one is yellow" or you have just
completed a "nut & bolt" rebuild, you will enjoy a trip to mainland Europe with the Lurani gang. The
Lurani is trully international and if the extent of your ability in a foreign language is limited to Hello and
Thank You do not be put off. Everyone makes an effort to communicate, socialise and help where
necessary be it mechanical, medical, shopping or something obscure, such as........well use or
imagination!

Many of the rounds have entertainment provided, see the Hockenheim report on the FJ web page,
and if not we improvise. Many of us prefer to stay at the circuit in a motorhome to really get into the
spirit of things - but those who prefer the comforts of a hotel will not feel left out. There is always a hot
drink and welcome from the members with facilities at the circuit.
Do not forget the benefits of cheaper fuel, alcohol and the deli counter, and dare I say tobacco
products, to offset the extra cost involved. For the driver the advantages are that the racing is usually
over three days, which include a qualifying session of 25-30 minutes plus two races of twenty-five
minutes. Also the experience of racing at a different circuit which often is included in the Formula One
championship, for example Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Spa and Estoril.
So come on, check those diaries and join the party!

RENAULT GEARBOX's FOR FJ's
I can confirm that Charlie Smith is working on a box for me incorporating 'Hewland Gears'. We have a
set of gears installed in a case, but have stopped work for the time being to enable us to give more
thought to the design of the gear selector rods and forks which need modifying from the standard
Renault.
The failure of my box at Monaco was due to two Factors:
1) An incorrectly machined bottom gear. The bevel on the leading edge of the teeth had been
incorrectly machined, which caused the leading edge of the teeth to brake down and wear off.
2) The Limited contact of the layshaft gear when engaged. (Applies to both Standard and Lotus
Gears)
The combination of these two factors produced excessive pressure on the contact area resulting in
failure. To recifty this we can move the bottom gear on the lay shaft forward to produce a deeper
engagement, and make sure that the bevel on the front face of the gear is correctly machined. I would
point out that this was my first gearbox failure since restoring the car in 2003.
By going over to the 'Hewland Gears' and making sure that the machining, material selection and heat
treatment of all the components is done correctly, we should eliminate the current problems and have
a reliable gearbox. I will keep you posted of developments.

Rudi de Waldkirch
Ex FJ period racer , Ken Lyon , adds a sad note
Dear Duncan,
In reading your Newsletter 114 I read in one paragraph of the BARC Yorkshire Centre annual 1960's
reunion report a small mention about a Swiss driver coming off at the corner before Lodge and
succumbing to serious injuries. As I knew that driver quite well I felt compelled to fill in a bit about the
man.
I attach a photo showing this very man spinning at Old Hall corner at Oulton Park in July of 1960. His
name was Rudi de Waldkirch and his car for 1960 was a Lotus 17. I n 1961 he purchased a Lotus18
Junior and was doing reasonably well till Oulton. I knew Rudi from his 1100 sports car days and sort of
lost contact when he began racing the junior. Without doubt he was one of the nicest guys I ever met.
He usually had two or three Swiss friends helping him along with his very pretty and pleasant sister. In
retrospect, I suppose all the increased safety stuff since that time would have kept some of these nice
guys around. Ofcourse, it was a sort of macho thing to fly in the face of the very real dangers of that
era. In any case, I have fond memories of Rudi de Waldkirch.
All the best,

which is great to know. He has some difficulty with his English and his e-mails and letters take some

Robert would like to come over to the Revival Meeting this year and I would love to return his kindness
for introducing me to the FJHRA and re-introducing me to car racing. He felt terrible when his parents
sold the Stanguellini, but realised that he would never race it again, It doesn't however lessen his love

Latest News from Aintree
Consultation - Aintree Redevelopment Update
Isn't it a pity that English Heritage took the view that the Aintree Grand Prix circuit did not
have sufficient historical significance to merit listing?
However, to ally any rumours, that " recent demolition work has destroyed much of the old
layout", it is only part of Tatts Corner that has been demolished to accommodate the
Spectators terraces (for a mere 2 800 people) of the 2 new grandstands.
The rest of the circuit remains as it was for the Festival of Motorsport in November 2004 (yes,
complete with the potholes created at Waterway Corner!)
There is however a real chance of future use as Charles Barnett, M.D. at Aintree Racecourse
has confirmed in writing to Andy Wallis, Planning Director of Sefton Council, that the track
at Tatts will be reinstated, slightly infield of the original position.
Following this, I have today received a copy of a letter sent, at my suggestion, from my M.P.,
Peter Kilfoyle, to Charles Barnett, inviting him to attend a meeting to discuss the
reinstatement of Tatts Corner.
I would therefore invite any comments or recommendations that any of you may wish to be
included in any proposed meeting as, so far, there has been no consultation by the Aintree
management with any potential users of the Grand Prix circuit, either prior to or following the
Planning decision, so we need to ensure that any reinstatement work undertaken at Tatts
meets future requirements I.e. Width, type of surface, and any other reasonable
considerations.
I can also confirm that the Club is still considering further matters in relation to the Planning
Application that gave rise to the demolition of most of the original track at the famous Tatts
Corner.

USA Historic racing licences
Chris Locke writes
Applications for an FIA license are handled by SCCA in the U.S. You should contact Janet
Farwell at SCCA Licensing in Colorado, tel. (800)
770-2055 or (303) 730-8100.
You will probably need to apply for an SCCA Vintage license (if you don't have one already)
to be eligible for issuance of an FIA Historic license, but the process should be very
straightforward if you can provide a few years of vintage racing history in the application.
NEW ZEALAND FJ NEWS – from Ian Garmey
A wrap-up following our season ending on 14 May - yes, another wet one. One wonders what
TACCOC have to do to get a dry race meeting, the Historic Racing Club's events this season have all
been held in glorious sunshine !
On to the more positive aspects of the day. We did it, we had our largest Formula Junior entry ever,
eight cars - and eight cars started and finished the one 12-lap race we did manage to get.
Craig Abbott unveiled the New Zealand Formula Junior Register's new logo much to everyone's
delight. Please see the attachment. Many thanks to Craig and his team at Republik Communications
for a thoroughly professional effort.
Condolences to Wayne and Bruce Carter. First proper run in the beautifully restored Cooper T76 and
Wayne had to find the biggest and muddiest puddle exiting Railway. A team effort soon had the car
looking magnificent again, though the same couldn't be said for Wayne !
Some more very positive news ... Wayne Rodgers has purchased the Lynx-Ford which has been
talked about for the past few weeks. It is chassis number 115 and is apparently the last Formula
Junior built by Lynx, it was run for Peter Williamson as a works entry by Lynx Engineering. The
project is essentially complete but requires finishing. Wayne reports that a huge history dossier
comes with the car. This is a 1962 rear-engined disc braked car which will keep John Rapley's
Brabham company. A very welcome addition to our grids. As an aside, this will be the ninth
rear engine car to go on the grid which will even up the score to the nine front engine cars.
Season's end points scoring is as follows :




1-litre Formula Three - Brabham-Ford BT9, Allan Woolf, 100; Cooper-BMC T76, Wayne

overall championship, that went to Roger Herrick's Taraschi. Congratulations Roger !

Some mindless statistics - 12 different cars driven by 13 drivers scored a total of 825 points.
Until 16 and 17 September when it will be time to start again ...

LOLA Mk2 History and MORE NZ news
I have been communicating with David Pratley recently as we try and narrow
down the identity of the Fitzwilliam cars. Through a bit of deduction based
on a series of photos that we have gathered, we have come to the conclusion
that my car (BRJ1) had the red nose band, BRJ2 the blue nose band and BRJ3
the yellow nose band. It appears that BRJ3 was sold to the Cambridge Team
around August 1960 and eventually came to NZ in late 1961 via Phil Kerr to
local driver John Histed. John has provided me with lots of period photos
and documentation from when he owned the car (1961 to 1963) plus his supply
of spare parts which he had kept for over 40 years. Fitzwilliam the got a
new BRJ3 but for two races in the 1960 series Fitzwilliam only entered two
cars (BRJ1 and 2) until the new one surfaced.
Anyway, from tracking down the nose band colours I think I can determine
who drove what car in at least some of the 1960 races. It looks like mine
was driven by John Whitmore and Michael May (and probably others).
It looks as though the frontal damage to the chassis I have found could
have been caused in May's crash at Nurburgring as David has a photo showing
near front side accident damage to the red nosed car at that race. I have
wriiten to John Whitmore to see if he has any recollections and would like
to contact Michael May likewise - do you know of his contact details?
I have also bought another car last week that was Chris Amon's first race
car. It is a "NZ Special" single seater that was built by my late uncle Des
Herrick in 1948. Chris purchased it in 1959/60 and it then had many other
owners. It was "stored" for the last 15 years and after much detective work
I tracked it down and made the purchase - so it is back in family ownership
after more than 50 years.

DANISH FJ History – Request for Information

It is with interest that I read your FJ newsletter, and I wonder whether you could include this
humble request in one of your future editions. I am presently preparing a book on the story of
the Danish racing circuit Ring Djursland, which was set up in 1965 by former Danish
Formula Junior champion and international regular Jens Christian Legarth.
I am searching for persons
* who have met or raced against Jens Christian (sadly he died in a 1967 accident at the circuit
which also claimed the live of Douglas Revson - younger brother of Peter)
* who have raced at Ring Djursland (be it 1000 cc F3 races in the latter half of the sixties, two
litre F3 races in the mid-seventies or just something else).

Pictures, results, anecdotes, memories, well everything is welcome.
