How to Tech Notes
Returns (RMA’S)
If you come across a part that needs to be replaced in needs to be ordered through Kimberly
O’Hara. You will need the model and serial number off of the computer. If it is for a monitor
you need the information off of the computer plus the model and serial number off of the
monitor.
Log into School Dude and assign it to Kim and put in the notes under action taken the part you
need plus all of the numbers that are needed. Kim will then order the part and we will figure
out how to best get them to you at OEHS.
Patching down connections
When you need to patch down a connection for a computer look at the number on the port you
are connecting to. Generally the room number of the MDF/IDF is listed first by the port. This
isn’t always the case as you found out today in E280. Most of the time when they don’t have
the room number they are in the MDF in A287. The patch panel is labeled ABCDEF so it is
easy to match up where you are supposed to plug in to.
Registering computers
To check and see if a computer is registered go to start, run, regedit. Go to Local machine,
software, Novell, workstation manager, identification. Look in the pane on the right to see
what school (if any) the computer is registered to. The C0 number should match the tag on the
right side of the computer and also the computer name itself.
If it is not registered or not registered correctly this is what you need to do. Login with the tech
login, open up a command prompt and type in zwsreg –unreg. Log off the computer and login
as a teacher of OEHS or yourself with either a student or user profile and this should register it.
Make sure to check it before you log off again.
School Dude’s
If you work on a ticket and can’t close it make sure you put notes in. When a ticket is complete
mark it complete, assign it to yourself and put notes in the action taken. Put the date first, your
notes and then your initials. New notes always go at the top of other things that may be written.
Make sure to click on save.
Path to download apps and sw related toOEHS
I talked to Brent today and asked him to give you rights to the tech folder on OEHS so you can
get to software related to your specific school. You will have to type in the UNC path in order
to see it. You can do that through Internet Explorer or My Computer. \\oehs_1\data\Tech
Let me know if you have any questions. Stacey Aspen

times you go and clear autocomplete in IE.
Here's the solution:

Malware article
How do I know?
Now to the question many of you have been asking me. How do I know that the software I’m
about to download and install is safe? It appears that Satterfield and I were thinking along the
same lines as we both found several Web sites that publish lists of rogue software and
applications. Checking whether an application is listed on these Web sites will help determine
whether the software in question is malware or not.
Rogue malware listings


Sunbelt Software, the developer of CounterSpy, has a Web site that lists over 397 rogue
security programs (their name for rogue software). I personally have used Sunbelt
Software for many years and have no reservations about the company.
Spyware Signatures has an extensive list of rogue software signatures. In fact, it has so
many that it’s almost easier to use the search function. The main focus of Spyware

Signature is to provide relevant data to security companies that offer antimalware
applications. That’s good, because it means there’s incentive to keep the list relevant
and up to date.
My favorite malware scanner, MBAM from Malwarebytes.org, has a list called newest
rogue threats. It’s a little different from the others because the rogue software list is
published in a forum venue and is member driven. Truth be told, it’s the first place I
check.
These are the three lists that I refer to, but I’ll bet there are other good ones. In fact, I’d
appreciate hearing which lists you prefer.
Another side note
Being an anal paranoid, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t lose you as readers or have you
wondering where my security rantings have gone. The editorial staff at TechRepublic feels I
should post my security articles in Chad Perrin’s section IT Security. It makes sense to me, and
I hope it does to you as well. So to cure my paranoia, please sign up for the IT security
newsletter and look for me there.

restore tab, Properties, My Computer. If System Restore tab does not appear do a shift + right
click to get the “Run as” option and come in as Admin.

How to turn off Windows Error Reporting.
When Windows XP encounters a severe error that has the potential to crash the operating
system, it immediately halts the offending program and displays an error message that says the
application has encountered a problem and needs to close. Then, the operating system prompts
you to send an error report to Microsoft. You can avoid having to click the Don’t Send button
by disabling Error Reporting. Here’s how:
1. Press [Windows][Break] to display the System Properties dialog box.
2. Select the Advanced tab and click the Error Reporting button.
3. When you see the Error Reporting dialog box, select the Disable Error Reporting option. (If
you don’t want to see any type of error message, clear the But Notify Me When Critical Errors
Occur check box.)
4. Click OK twice — once to close the Error Reporting dialog box and once to close the
System Properties dialog box.
Note: This tip is for both Windows XP Home and Professional.

15. Step 4
Provide a new name for the drive. Click the "Erase" button.
16. Step 5
Perform the instructions given on the screen and finish the formatting.
Tips & Warnings
 Use FAT16 formats for flash drives up to 256 MB of storage. For drives above 256
MB, choose the FAT32 file system. This technique allows you to work on Mac as well
as the Windows platform.
 Before unplugging, make sure the light is off. When in use, the flash drive shows a red
or blue light.
 Make sure the flash drive is installed on your computer and detected by the system.
 Use an USB extension cable to plug in the flash drive if you are unable to access the
USB port on the computer.
 Formatting erases all the data on the drive so make sure you backup every folder and
file before formatting.
 Avoid formatting the flash drive unless you absolutely need to do so. You may render
the flash drive useless if you are unable to format it due to technical problems.
Troubleshooting a bad format is difficult. Common problems in the flash drives can be
amended by running the firmware utility "PL2315Config.exe" located in Windows OS
of your PC.
 Avoid using Ext 2/3 on other drives, as it works well only on the Linux

How to maybe fix USB Flash Memory with CD ROM only showing
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/431456/how-can-i-make-a-usb-flash-drive-appear-notappear-as-a-cd-drive
I recently was given a small USB flash drive as an advertising gimmick. When I plug it in,
only one drive appears: a CD drive with 42kb used (just an autorun.inf file which launches the
manufacturer's website). I know U3 drives also appear as CD drives, but their uninstall utility
only works for their own drives.
How can I make it appear as a USB drive instead? Conversely, if I wanted to do the same thing
for myself, how would I make it appear as a CD drive?
I'm sure it can be done programmatically, or else the uninstall program wouldn't work.
Ok, there is 2 questions here :
1) How can I make it appear as a USB drive instead?
It's depends on device itself. I can see 2 options.
Device support writing, but represent itself as CDROM and read only. In this case you just
need to tweak the device descriptor and you will get working storage device.
Device does not implement write and nothing can be done.
By tweaking device descriptor i mean filter driver that will receive device descriptor and will
pass a modified one to Windows. Writing filter driver is not very hard and you can find an
examples of filter driver in Driver development Kit. A basic understanding of USB protocol
will be needed as well.
2) Conversely, if I wanted to do the same thing for myself, how would I make it appear as a
CD drive?
Basically same, filter driver that will change the device descriptor to be recognized by
CDROM device, but in additional once Windows will recognize CDROM it will send
additional SCSI commands to device. Ideally device will just return unsupported command and
it's OK, but from my experience most devices are not generic enough and the behavior will be
undefined. In this case you will need additional filter driver that will catch this additional
commands and will complete the commands without actually sending them to device.
P.S
My answer assume that you don't have access to device firmware, If you do have access to
firmware it's really easy to accomplish by modifying device descriptor and making sure that
not supported commands are handled correctly.
P.P.S
I don't provide any links to resources since i don't think that practically you going to implement
this. If I'm wrong let me know and i will provide relevant resources. Ok one link with general
information
Hey guy, I have done with my usb FD serveral times to make it into 2 devices CD and usb. The only
thing you must do is download chipgenius then run it,wait for it to identify your usb then go to
http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=Files search your usb firmware tool. If you get the correct one
i'm sure there will be no problem. I had done that and turned my usb into hiren boot cdrom, and when
boot from bios you no longer choose your usb name but choose usb-cdrom option.

Welcome to the forum. The .wlmp file is a project file, not a video. You need to open it in
WLMM and save the movie. From the left-most icon of the main menu, use 'Save movie' and
it'll give you choices of quality and save it to your hard drive.

How to put Apple MACBook into Projector display Mode.
Hi - I am having trouble connecting the macbook pro to an epson projector. I am not good with
all of the proper terms but here goes...i have the "special connector" for the macbook to the
VGA cable. No image is displaying on the projector from the laptop. On a PC i know that in
order to change the image display we need to hit Funtion F10. Is there a similar key on the
macbook.
I appreciate any help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Connecting MacBook Pro to EPSON Projector
Apr 25, 2009 12:51 AM (in response to suzi1967)
Hi suzi1967, welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a number of things we can try to resolve the problem here. The very first thing you
should do is make sure you download and install the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware
Update. You'll need to have the mini-DisplayPort to VGA adaptor (the "special connector")
plugged into the MacBook Pro for it to work, as it actually updates the software on a chip
inside that adaptor. You don't need to have the projector plugged in as well during the update,
just the adaptor itself. I updated mine in this way with no problems.
Once that update is complete, plug the projector into the MacBook Pro. Ensure that the
projector's input setting is on the correct input. Then, open System Preferences, and click
"Displays". I recommend that if you do any work with projectors or external displays at all you
check the "Show displays in menu bar" box at this point. That will put a menu in your menu
bar with a picture of a display on it. You can close System Preferences now. Then click that
menu, and select "Detect Displays". The displays may flicker at this point. After that, you
should see some picture on the projector. Using that menu, you can then change the resolution
of the displays, turn "mirroring" on or off, and "Detect Displays".
Mirroring means that both your MacBook Pro display and the projector will show the same
image. If you turn off mirroring, then the MBP will go to "extended desktop" mode, and will
use the projector as a "second" desktop. That means you can drag windows or icons from one
desktop to the other, and have separate things on each display. Mirroring is simpler though.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! And let us know if it works!

Supported Flash Memories
What are the recommended USB flash drive brands I should use in the district?
Kingston, PNY, Verbatim, SanDisk, Lexar, HP and Easystore USB flash drives are the
recommended brands that we have tested and know work in our environment. If you have
another brand, you can request it be added to this list by submitting a SchoolDude so we can
test its functionality within our environment.
If you have issues with your USB drive, you may need to unplug your SmartBoard, document
