writing used by ancient civilizations, mainly Egyptians. Hieroglyphics
uses symbols that have a special meaning, or have a certain sound.
From about the 5th century AD to the 1820s no one could decipher
hieroglyphics, so historians know little about the Egyptians for hundreds
of years. It was extremely important to learn hieroglyphics because the
Egyptians were such a dominant country for so long, they influenced our
culture very much, and we needed to understand what happened to them,
& how they fell out of power.
2) These were pictures or diagrams the Egyptians used to communicate.
It was derived from cuneiform and ideograms, the reason for this is, it
was the earliest form of writing.

Thomas Young and Jean Champollion went on to help decipher the
hieroglyphs.

Which needs the most improvement? Why?
1) Cuneiform was an early form of writing, mainly used by the
Sumerians. It consisted mainly of pictographs. The word cuneiform
comes from the Latin word, meaning wedge shaped. It was created
during the time period of 4,000-3,000 BC.
2) Cuneiform was the invention of the Sumerians. This form of writing
evolved from their earlier form of pictographic writing. Pictographs
used pictures to represent words. Cuneiform, which is Latin for wedge
shape, used strokes of a stylus to represent words. Cuneiform was the
Sumerians greatest achievement and was incorporated into other
Mesopotamian cultures.
3) A Sumerian form of writing, derived from the Latin term for "wedgeshaped" describing the strokes used in writing cuneiform. The language
became a breakthrough when sounds could be represented with its signs.
Only professional scribes mastered the language due to its complex
makeup. Around the year 2500 B.C. scribal schools flourished
throughout Sumer. Most of the students came from wealthy families
and generally were male students caned for sloppy work and
misbehavior.
4) Cuneiform was the writing of the Mesopotamians. It was the
Behistun inscription, inscription of Darius. It had three scripts, they
were old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian.
