Edo Period: Period of isolation. Began in 1603 and ended in 1867.

** There was peace and isolation for more than 200 years.

How did Geography affect the Japanese worldview?

Japan is made up of 4 main small islands.

73% is mountainous, which creates a natural fortress

Bordered by major bodies of water, which helped control who entered and left

No other countries directly border Japan, so it was easy to control the external influences.

Bodies of water never freeze- which made transport easy

The West side of Japan is mountainous and not populated, this made it easy to protect the border closest to other countries.

The East end is where 90% of the population lives, which keeps the population contained.

Naturally isolated, which makes it easy to keep separate from the world.

How and why did the era of Great Peace begin?

In 1500 the emperor wanted to unite Japan and stop war between the regions that were controlled by the Daimyo.

Tokugawa Ieyasu did not want Japanese people exposed to Western ideas.

He wanted to ensure their safety and sovereignty.

The Bakufu was also concerned with the spread of Christianity.

Fearing a loss of control- they isolated Japan.
