Glenda Dawson High School Course Syllabus 2015-2016 Course: Medical Terminology Course Description: Medical Terminology exposes the student to the health care system through a working knowledge of the language of health care. Students acquire word-building skills by learning how to use prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and abbreviation used in the medical and health care industry. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to successfully secure employment and pursue advanced medical education. This course prepares the student for the Principles of Health Science. Instructional Philosophy: By studying the historical context from which current health care practice evolved the student develops an appreciation and understanding of the technical advances and the human dimension in the biomedical field. Major Course Goals: The student will have the basic knowledge of medical language as it pertains to therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental, and information systems of the health care industry. Major Course Projects & Instructional Activities: 1. Power-point oral presentation. 2. Weekly current healthcare event reports. Supplies and Materials needed: 1 inch three ring binder, pen and pencil, highlighter, dividers, paper. Text book: Introduction to Medical Terminology or Comprehensive Medical Terminology, 3rd Edition and the student workbook that accompanies the textbook. Homework Policy & Grading Scale: Glenda Dawson High School also uses a uniform grading scale. Grading scale is outlined in the student handbook, please read. Homework and/or class work is to be turned in on the due date. Late homework/class work will have eleven (11) points deducted from your daily grade each day that it is late. Please turn your homework and class work in on time. Grading Policies: In accordance with Dawson high school grading policy. You are required to bring your text book (when available) to every class period unless instructed otherwise. Periodic and random notebook checks will be done for a daily grade. Notebooks will be kept neat and current at all times. Your notebook will be turned in at the end of the semester and it will be graded. This grade will count as one major test grade.
