Requirements for Visual and Presentation
Choose one of the following topics and prepare a visual presentation to be presented in
class.
#1 – Research botanist, Charles B. Heiser, Jr., and review his work on the use of tobacco
during the Renaissance. Design a poster (using Mr. Reece’s help and lab), a web page
(using Mrs. Kheil or Mrs. Adam’s lab), or a brochure (using Microsoft Publisher on the
computers) supporting the use of tobacco. Research old magazine ads and commercials
advertising smoking to get ideas for your lay out and design. Be sure to include reasons
tobacco was important, who typically used it, and where it was harvested and purchased.
#2 - Research the Counterblasts to Tobacco, published in 1604, largely believed to be the
work of James 1, to obtain ideas and reasons the king believed tobacco was not good for
people. . Design a poster (using Mr. Reece’s help and lab), a web page (using Mrs. Kheil or
Mrs. Adam’s lab), or a brochure (using Microsoft Publisher on the computers) opposing the
use of tobacco. Be sure to include reasons why James I was opposed to it (Hint: the king’s
conflict with Sir Walter Raleigh).
#3 – Research Phillip Stubbs and his The Anatomie of Abuses to design an advertisement for
clothes that might be typical for Renaissance clothing. . Design a poster (using Mr. Reece’s
help and lab), a web page (using Mrs. Kheil or Mrs. Adam’s lab), or a brochure (using
Microsoft Publisher on the computers) advertising the sale of clothes. Be sure to give your
designer a name (Hint: Use your name and come up with a catchy, figurative designer –
Amy’s Awesome Apparel, better known as AaA Clothing.) Your presentation has to
include explanation of the colors, designs, symbols, material, trim, etc….
#4 – Design a political pamphlet denouncing the Catholic Church and promoting the
Protestant religion. Design a poster (using Mr. Reece’s help and lab), a web page (using
Mrs. Kheil or Mrs. Adam’s lab), or a brochure (using Microsoft Publisher on the
computers) in support of the new religion. Research Martin Luther and The Ninety-Five
Theses to get information for your presentation.
#5 - Design a political pamphlet supporting the Catholic Church and denouncing the
Protestant religion or heresy. Design a poster (using Mr. Reece’s help and lab), a web page
(using Mrs. Kheil or Mrs. Adam’s lab), or a brochure (using Microsoft Publisher on the
computers) in support of the Catholic Church. Research Pope Paul III and the Council of
Trent to get information for your presentation.
Grading for Visuals and Presentations
All work has to be in color
All graphics have to have explanations using complete sentences and correct grammar
Your work has to have a title
You must have at least 3 graphics
You must have a 5 paragraph persuasive essay explaining your work and supporting your
choice – This paper will be graded using the 1-6 scale used on the writing assessments.

Grading System: 1 (below 50), 2 (50-69), 3 (70-74), 4 (75-84), 5 (85-92), 6 (93-100)
You must present your work to the class
Your presentation must be between 2 and 3 minutes
You may not read your paper to the class
You must be prepared to answer questions from the class and your teacher
